Dog Gone Good offers positive reinforcement training with a fear free touch. We are currently offering classes at Companion Animal Care Ctr. in Balto. Co.
Our methods of training are operant conditioning with an emphasis on positive reinforcement, and bridge & target training. Current class offered is Puppy K with a Fear Free Touch. The goal for this class is to teach basic puppy k skill, socialization, bite inhibition, environmental enrichment, confidence, and how to have a less stressful veterinary visit.
Mochi and Penny graduate Puppy K.
Pic 1: Mochi worked very hard at learning basics and letting her nails get trimmed. Marley, in pic on left, also worked hard learning how to get Mochi to trust her. It was so much fun working with them.
Pic 2: Penny was a late addition to Puppy K but showed how smart she was and caught up fast. She will be taking Basic soon, and meanwhile she is working on target training for pool safety.

Congratulations to Jinny & Ranger for graduating Puppy K!! Jinny you came a long way with learning bite inhibition and how to "relax". And Ranger, not only did you finally learn "down", but you "roll over" like a champ!

I really enjoyed working with all of you. It is so nice to see owners bond with their animals, which is really what a training environment fosters.
Lucy & Tinker were unable to attend the last class, but they will be taking their test soon and I will post their pics when they graduate.
Graduates this week!
Pic 1: Oliver graduated Puppy K! He and his family worked very hard on learning bite inhibition. Oliver is doing very well with it now. He also loved to roll over, and made friends with Harley, Cleo, and Lucy.
Pic 2: Harley graduated Puppy K as well! She and Oliver really enjoyed playing and rough-housing with one another every class. Harley would go from playing with Oliver to learning "relax" like a champ!
Pic 3: Shylah graduated Basic Training. Shylah is a very shy girl, but she didn't take too long to get comfortable and start training, which she now loves! She also built up confidence by bravely going through tunnels. Even the scary big blue tunnel. I was very proud of her!

Congratulations Lucy! Lucy is our newest graduate from Basic Training with a Fear Free Touch. Lucy trained individually because she was reacting to other dogs in class with barking. Since her training, she does not react with barking to all other dogs (only some very specific dogs). Melissa & Evan are her handlers and did a fantastic job training Lucy. They are going to use their newly learned training skills to work with Lucy reacting to those specific dogs that cause her to bark. Lucy, Melissa & Evan were a pleasure to work with!
Our latest Puppy K with a Fear Free Touch Graduates! They worked really hard and did a great job. All the puppies learned the importance of socialization, which is the most important lesson to learn, along with some basic commands and conditioning to nail trimming. They also learned that tunnels are the best fun ever!!

Graduation day - Basic Training with a Fear Free Touch. Congratulations to Herrington & Shadow! Both of you were excellent students. I hope you enjoy your graduation gifts.
Shadow learning Stay. Even though he has a bit of an attention span issue, he is doing a great job of learning all of his basic commands! For dogs with a low attention span, we give them lots of breaks in between learning so they don't get frustrated with training. Shadow likes to walk around and sniff all the wonderful doggy smells in-between training.

Puppy K & Basic Training week 4.
Pics 1-4: In Puppy K our conditioning to nail trimming is right on point. We were able to clip a couple of nails from each puppy without them pulling back, or struggling against the trimming.
Pic 5: Puppy K. Axel learning to rollover just for fun. Can also be used for exams when veterinarian needs to examine the stomach, or for x-rays.
Pic 6: Puppy K. Madden learning how to relax. Puppies can be very excitable. Teaching them to relax is a good way to settle them down when needed.

Pic 11: Basic training: Herrington learning to stay. Herrington was in the previous Puppy K class and has come a long way with his training. He enjoys every class!
Pic 12: Basic training: Shadow learning to stay in a down position. Shadow is an older dog and a great student. He loves to train and always impresses.
Puppy K week 3 - Sorry guys...didn't get a lot of pics this week, but did get the following:
Pic 1: Madden isn't crazy about having her paws held and would pull away immediately. Here she is slowly becoming conditioned to it. With patience, consistency, and yummy treats, conditioning is possible, especially at such an early age.

Puppy K week 2:
Pics 1-4: Madden, Axel, Diesel & Winston are mastering going through tunnel. Tunnel builds confidence, and it imprints learning “Here” in the future. It is also loads of fun, and they feel very accomplished when they finally go all the way through the tunnel.
Pics 5-8: Axel, Diesel, Madden & Winston being conditioned to nail trimming. Through Fear Free Certification at Companion Animal Care Center, we learned that nail trimming can be one of the most overwhelming and stressful experiences for a dog. Conditioning puppies at a young age to associate nail trimming with yummy treats to create a positive experience is important.
Pics 9 & 10: All of the puppies socializing. It is hard to get a good socialization picture because they are all mingling so fast, but I did my best. Socialization is one of the most important things for puppies to learn. From the ages of 8-23 weeks is when puppies form their opinions that they carry into adulthood. If socialized properly with dogs and people, most puppies become dogs who are dog and people friendly. (There are always exceptions to this rule.)
This current Puppy K class is amazing! All of the puppies are well behaved and play so well together. Even though Madden is much bigger than Winston, she approaches him in a fun and playful way. And Winston, although at first cautious with Madden's size, read her body language as playful and he became playful as well. I couldn't be happier with this group of puppies, and their owners.

Pic 2: Madden being conditioned to having her collar touched. I teach this conditioning because if there is ever a time when you have to grab a dog's collar to keep them from running into danger, you want them to be use to having their collar touched, and not instinctively turn and bite when you do so.
Pic 3: Axel being conditioned to having his ears touched, which makes for a much easier and less stressful veterinarian exam.
Pic 4: Winston learning to sit. This was a hard earned command for Winston to learn. Kudos to his family for continuing to try with patience and consistency, and to Winston for performing successfully. Nice job!

Basic Training week 3
Lincoln is very young, and this was also his first time in class. He did his training homework and I was quite impressed with his skills!
Mallie is fearful of strangers. Mainly men. She also does things in her own time. She got use to the dogs and the people in class and is now more focused on training. We take it slow, at her pace. It's important to always set your dog up for success so they enjoy their training and want to learn more. Move at their pace so they understand what you are asking of them.

Puppy K Week 3
Pic 1 - socialization. The important thing to note in this picture is Airlie, the puppy in the orange hoodie (LOL). When class first started, Airlie was very hesitant and scared to play with other dogs. She didn't understand their body language. Here, she is getting curious and comfortable. She is learning the body language of her fellow dogs. This is why socialization at a very early age is so important.

Puppy K Class. In pics 1 & 2 Herrington is becoming conditioned to having his nails trimmed. Nail trimming can be very overwhelming for dogs so it is important to condition them to it at an early age. In pics 3 & 4 Airlie learns to socialize with the help of Gigi. In Puppy K Airlie, a shy puppy who didn't understand the body language of her fellow puppies, was able to slowly learn the language and enjoy puppy playtime.
Puppy K with a Fear Free Touch starts again. Going through cubes and tunnels builds confidence, and also imprints learning “Here”. In the first pic Herrington, who is our puppy who most loves to socialize, cautiously goes through the cube. He was wary of the tunnel, so we build his confidence with the cube and work up to going through tunnel. Airlie, who is our shier puppy in the second pic, did not want to socialize at first, but loved the large tunnel once she worked up the courage. And then we have little Gigi, our most outgoing puppy, and Herrington socializing in the third pic.

When Ashley turns her attention to someone else besides Lucy, Lucy exhibits an unwanted behavior of nudging Lucy or her guest to get the attention focused back on her. We are modifying this behavior by 1) ignoring the unwanted behavior when it occurs, and 2) rewarding Lucy when she exhibits the desired behavior of settling down and waiting her turn for attention (a/k/a capturing the desired behavior). Here Ashley praises Lucy for exhibiting the desired behavior.
