Our last day on the grouse moors this season. Been an absolutely amazing season, Ziva’s first and I couldn’t be happier with her performance. 3 months on pheasants coming up so no time to rest. Train, work, evaluate.

Great day out working on the moor with my little mate Ziva today.
Steadiness training really put to the test today. Apart from the dozens of grouse, she had to deal with a couple of hundred sheep and a good few bolting rabbits. Completely ignored these huge distractions and totally focused on the task.
She also had a nice few points and flushes and also bumped a few with the sheer speed with which she was hunting.
She was sent out for blinds and delivered a few nice retrieves too, including two runners on the first two drives (first time she’s been sent for pricked birds) and delivered nicely to hand undamaged.
Not perfect but definitely improving and I’m super happy with her.

Sometimes equipment choice can have an impact on the outcome of your training sessions. When considering which piece of kit to use, I always choose something appropriate for the aims of the session. In today’s session with Ziva, we were working on progressing her retrieving in light cover. We were doing memory, marked and blind retrieves, and for this session I chose ‘The Original’ Target Dummy by Retriev R Trainer from Fullpip Ltd. I wanted to increase the complexity of her training while retaining the chance of success and promoting her ability and confidence. The white strip on the dummy really made a difference especially when doing the blind retrieves, she ran arrow straight on the line I sent her on and found the dummy every single time.

Progressing Ziva’s retrieving.

We started with it being fun, nothing serious or with any pressure, just encouraging the behaviour that we want. We have a little exercise that helps to build a neural pathway that really helps us when we want to start making the retrieve more formal and putting the retrieving chain together.
Today we did a couple of exercises to work on steadiness, marking and delivery.

Our choice of equipment for this part of Ziva’s training is Sporting Saint - Gundog Training Equipment’s puppy dummy. The blue colour is within the canine colour spectrum so really stands out, promoting success and building her confidence. The size, shape and weight is ideal for the younger dog. It’s always our ‘go to’ dummy for beginning retrieving.

Focusing on the basics.

After giving Ziva a couple of weeks to settle into our home and build our bond, she’s also spent time getting to know our other dogs. We then spent time concentrating on the home basics and boundaries, both important elements of her education towards becoming a well mannered dog.

As she will take a while to develop both physically and mentally, we moderate the training sessions so that everything we do is age and development appropriate.

A few pictures from today’s training session where we worked on off-lead heelwork, recall and retrieving.
