Let's talk about observation!

Observation is a huge part of not just raising your puppy but a huge part of socialization, desensitization, and confidence building. Exposing your puppy to different sounds, environments, feelings, situations, are all extremely important in forming a well mannered, well rounded, well trained puppy.

What people don't know is that socializing and desensitizing isn't just to meet people and animals. Its EVERYTHING. This means going to parks and watching from a distance. Just sit and observe. It means going down town and just sitting in your car watching people walk past. You could do literally anything and you would be socializing and desensitizing your puppy.

Observing is the best way to start with any new experience. If your dog is afraid of something, just create as much distance to provide them safety while still being able to observe whatever scares them. If your dog is curious about something but takes it a bit too far, create distance and observe. This will not only teach your puppy that those things are ok, but it will teach your puppy how to be calm in new situations.

Something that I've worked on big time with Appy is observing. Just taking him outside to watch things from our front lawn. Ive even walked down our street so he can watch the cars drive by. He now loads into the car perfectly.

Since Appy's incident, it's been difficult to get out and train because where I live there are so many dogs and while he may be a little uncomfortable, I'm the one who is scared. He feeds off of that. So what is my solution? Observe. Let him watch what goes on and let him get comfortable, so he knows that even if I'm uncomfortable, there's really nothing to be afraid of. You'll see that when someone walks past or a dog is close, he will be protective. But after a little work and observation he settles down and forgets all about it. Literally perfection.
