Initial signs of lameness in poultry
Initial signs could be one, or more, of the following:
• Favoring one leg while moving around;
• Dragging one leg;
• Walking crookedly or wobbling;
• Splayed legs, either one to the side or one forward and one back
• Twisted toe or toes curled inwards or outwards;
• Listless and not moving around much;
• Sitting back on the hocks, unable to stand;
• Standing with one foot raised.

Prevention of rickets in poultry
For healthy bone calcification:
1. Calcium and Phosphorus need to be in adequate supply, and also in a 2 : 1 ratio of each other.
2. Vitamin D3 is critical to regulating the absorption and metabolism of calcium.
3. An adequate amount of Vitamin D3 can be produced within 11-45 minutes of exposure to sunlight.

Rickets in poultry
Rickets in poultry is caused mainly by :
1. deficiencies of either vitamin D3
2. deficiencies of either calcium, phosphorus
3. calcium , phosphorus imbalance.
4. using old feed in which vitamin D3 has been destroyed by rancidity.
5. Mycotoxins
6. toxins from mold or fungus
7. as well as some medication may also affect the absorption of Calcium and Phosphorus

First method Feed restriction :
Simply birds are fed below appetite by reducing the amount of feed offered during each feeding or by reducing the number of feedings per day.
In the first instance the more aggressive birds will always consume more feed to the detriment of others decreasing broiler carcass weight uniformity.
In the latter case hunger will make the birds restless which further reduces their growth rate as nutrients are diverted from growth to feed seeking activity.

Some nutritionists could argue that early growth restriction can be used as part of a permanent well designed program that takes advantage of the "compensatory growth" phenomenon. But such a program can backfire if growth restriction is too severe or if birds cannot consume enough nutrients during the compensatory period.
This can easily happen for a number of reasons such as :
1. not enough feed intake capacity
2. not high enough nutrient density in later feeds
3. not enough time to compensate.
Thus compensatory growth is an altogether different issue that requires further insight.
To slow down the growth of broilers, there are three common methods that can be applied under commercial conditions with little difficulty and very simple adjustments
