So I’ve ummed and ahhhed about whether post this video or not, but ultimately it shows the major difference that sheath cleaning can have and I’m here to educate people of the huge importance it has ✅.
I’ve known Little Taffy a couple of years now and he is a regular of mine, he always gets beans form and is always quite reactive in telling me about his discomfort 🙈 beans form in the urethral fossa pocket and press directly onto the urethra (wee pipe) so you can imagine how uncomfortable it is 😣
It is quite common I go see and visit horses which are particularly reactive, soon as I remove the bean they settle down lovely 🥰 remove the issue, remove the discomfort!
If I feel a bean I’m always really keen to continue the appointment (if safe to do so) as I just know the instant relief it can bring and job satisfaction doesn’t get much better than that 🐴
This reels shows little Taffy being quite explosive to begin with but soon as I removed the bean he stood like an angel and got lots of treats and praise 😇
Listen to your horses 🐎❤️
Side note - I am professional and do this day in day out 🐴
please don’t attempt at home, contact a professional and sedation can be used if needed at veterinary discretion

So lets talk products!
So lets talk products!
When sheath cleaning we only ideally want to be using warm water and a water based lubricant.
Unfortunately most sheath cleaning products or any old traditional wives tails such as baby oil, do more harm than good. It puts your horse at more risk of irritation and unwanted UTI’s for an example

What is smegma?!
Smegma is something the horse naturally produces and needs, built up of dead skin cells, dirt, sweat and oils.
Along with sebaceous glands that produce something called sebrum (essentially helps keep the horses coat waterproof) which also contributes to build up and smegma forming within the horse.
It accumulates within the male horses sheath and if left to build up over time it can cause irritation or discomfort.
Sheath cleaning should be seen as an essential part of your horses welfare 🐴🫘🧼✅
