Say hello to Allie! Allie and her owner just completed their 10th training session with puppy parade. Our 10th training session was at Home Depot where we worked on loose leash walking, focus, sit-stay and greeting new people. She did amazing, even with all the distractions that come with a hardware store. This has been one of my favorite clients. I couldn’t be happier knowing how well they followed through on the training program. Allie has made so much progress over our 10 sessions, learning how to do pretty much everything her owner wanted and so much more. Thank you Allie!

We here at Puppy Parade like to educate ourselves on dogs and their breeds. Today we are going to learn about a cute, small terrier, the Norwich terrier. The Norwich terrier is named after their hometown in England. This small terrier with a wire coat and pricked ears stands at 10 inches tall. The Norwich terrier like many terriers bred in England were used to control rodent populations. They were also used in packs to hunt foxes. The Norwich terrier is famously associated with Cambridge university for being popular among undergraduates in the 1870's and 80's. The Norwich terrier was introduced to America in 1914 by Frank Jones. He helped popularize the breed, so many owners called their dog's Jones' terriers even after the breed was recognised by the AKC. The AKC recognised the Norwich terrier by distinguishing it separate from it's close relative, the Norfolk terrier. One of the most famous dog's of the breed was Winky, the Norwich terrier that won in the movie, Best in Show.

We here at Puppy Parade like to educate Ourselves dogs and their breeds. Today I’d like to talk about a breed that is being talked about a bit these days with the new Cruella Deville movie coming soon, The Dalmatian. The easiest breed to distinguish by their spotted coat, yet at birth are all white. The Dalmatian has a very contested history of the origin of the breed. By the 1800s the breed gained popularity in an area of Croatia known as Dalmatia. The main reason why their origin is difficult to pinpoint is due to the reason they were bred. The Dalmatian was bred to Guard horse coaches trotting beside them, this allowed them to travel the world making their origin difficult. The English love the Dalmatian and had a few nicknames such as spotted dick and Plum pudding dog. The Dalmatian gained association with firefighters because back in the 1800s fire engines were pulled by horse. The American Kennel Club recorded the Dalmatian into their stud book in 1888.

We here at Puppy Parade like to educate ourselves on dogs and their breeds. This week one of my clients mentioned a breed I didn't know of, the Bavarian Mountain scent hound. They're hounds but the A.K.C. classifies them in the Foundation stock service group. The name of this breed is a good indicator that they're excellent at scent tracking. They are able to differentiate between an injured animal and a healthy animal of the same species when scent tracking. The breed comes from Germany and I love their name in the German language, Bayerischer Gebrigweisshund. The Bavarian mountain scent hound was bred in the mid 1800's crossing the Hanoverian scent hound and the Red mountain scent hound. They are still a rare breed, but their popularity is on the rise with new clubs in Great Britain and the United States, as well as Germany. The American Kennel club recorded them into the Foundation stock service group in 2016.

We here at Puppy Parade like to educate ourselves on dogs and their breeds. I'd like to talk about a talkative breed, the Siberian Husky. This is a personal favorite of mine for their humorous vocalizations and beautiful almond shaped eyes. Often mistaken with the Alaskan malamute, a close cousin. The Siberian Husky is significantly smaller weighing at most 60 pounds. The history of the Siberian Husky ties back to a group of indigenous people of a peninsula of Russia, the people known as the Chukchi are credited with breeding the husky. The Chukchi people bred the Husky to help them survive the harsh climate by expanding their hunting grounds traveling great distances in sub-zero conditions. The husky is a brilliant sled dog that is still used today for fun as well as sport. The most famous dog of the breed is named Balto. Balto was the lead sled dog of a team that traveled 658 miles in five and a half days to rush a life saving Diphtheria serum to Nome, Alaska. There's a statue in New York's Central park dedicated to Balto. The Siberian Husky was recrecognized by the American Kennel club in 1930.

We here at Puppy Parade like to educate ourselves on dogs and their breeds. A breed that troubled me in the earlier years of my journey of working with dogs, the Weimaraner. I had difficulty with this breed when I was a kennel aid. I would only recommend this breed to people who have the time and experience to train and exercise this breed. The Weimaraner is an intelligent breed that is strikingly beautiful with its gray coat and either blue or amber eyes. They're a very talented dog specializing in hunting, this quality helps recognize that they belong in the sporting group. The Weimar pointer or Weimaraner was bred into existence in the mid 1800's. The man credited with breeding the Weimaraner is the Grand Duke of Germany, Karl August, he resided from the town of Weimar, hence the name. This breeds hunting prowess is quite impressive. As they were originally used to hunt bears, mountain lions and wolves, eventually becoming an expert at retrieving birds. Dwight D. Eisenhower seems to be the only president or famous leader to own a Weimaraner, named Heidi. The breed was recognized by the AKC in 1943. The breed gained popularity after being recognized.

We here at Puppy Parade like to educate ourselves on dogs and their breeds. Today I'd like to talk about a breed I find really energetic and adorable, the Chihuahua. Part of the toy group, this little companion has a personality as big as their ears. Their coat comes in many different patterns and are either short or long hair. The Chihuahua's history dates back to the 12th century when the Aztecs bred the ancestor breed, the Techichi to a smaller dog. The Chihuahua is a breed of royalty as the Aztec leader, Montezuma, considered the Techichi to be one of his prized possessions. The breed gained popularity in the mid 1800's when Americans went to Mexico and more specifically the state of Chihuahua. The breed was found in abundance in the state hence the name. The breed was recognized by the AKC in 1904 and the first dog to be registered was named Beppie, that came 4 years later in 1908.

We here at Puppy Parade like to educate ourselves on dogs and their breeds. Today I'd like to take a look at breed I'm not as familiar with, the Papillon. Papillon is French for butterfly, the breed is named this because of their wing shaped ears. The Papillon was bred into existence due to nobles interest in miniature dogs during the renaissance era. They were bred by using the toy breeds and the dwarf spaniel. Rubens, Rembrandt, Goya and Toulouse-Lautrec are some of the famous painters at the time to feature the Papillon. The breed was also of royalty as there is a rather unfortunate story of loyalty. Marie Antoinette had a Papillon named Thisbe that apparently stood outside of her prison before her beheading. There is a drop eared variation of the Papillon that is called the Phalene. The breed was recognized by the AKC in 1935.

We here at Puppy Parade like to educate ourselves on dogs and their breeds. Today I'd like to talk about a fun little breed I came across on a walk, the Italian Greyhound. Even though they have the term hound in their name, they are considered part of the toy group. This breeds history dates back more than 2000 years ago when they were used in what is today Greece and Turkey. The Italian Greyhound is also a dog of royalty and wealth as many aristocrats and nobles had them as pets. Famous owners include; Frederick the great of Prussia, Catherine the great of Russia and Queen Victoria of England. They were seen more as a status symbol, as having miniature versions of certain breeds became popular in the renaissance era. There are many paintings of the breed during the renaissance by artists like; Giotto, Carpaccio, Memling and Van der Weyden. The Italian Greyhound looks essentially like a miniature Greyhound. They are the smallest among the gazehounds or sight hounds. The American Kennel club recognized the breed in 1886.

We here at Puppy Parade like to educate ourselves on dogs and their breeds. Today, I'd like to talk about a breed that just makes me laugh, the Corgi. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi to be exact as there is also the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. This adorable breed is a natural at herding and if you haven't seen it, please look up corgi herding ducks, it will not disappoint. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi has some easy physical features that distinguish itself from the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. The tail is an easy give away, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi has a nub tail, while it's counterpart has a long, thick tail. Being Welsh this smart breed hails from Wales, where they were used to herd cattle and sheep. Some time in the 18th century the split between the two breeds occurred. The names Pembroke and Cardigan come from the Welsh counties that served as breeding centers for each breed, Cardiganshire and Pembrokeshire. The ancestry of the Pembroke Welsh Corgi consists of Keeshond, Schipperke, Pomeranian,Samoyed, Chow Chow, Norwegian Elkhound and Finnish Spitz. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a dog of royalty, as Queen Elizabeth II of England had over 30 Corgis in her lifetime. They are an intelligent breed and have a friendly temperament. This week's research was started by a question I was asked, what is the funniest breed you've worked with? Easily it's a Corgi Rottweiler mix named, Wayne.
