Today’s Mission: Make a roundpen. Tomorrow I host a group that works with the horses on the ground. We have been focused on the three core behaviors from Happy Horse Happy Life: Connection, Relaxation, and Responsiveness. The roundpen will be a game changer as we play the connection game with each of the horses and continue to learn from our equine partners.

Happy Birthday to the horse who started it all! Ymir turns 20 today, we will celebrate with a walk down the trail and who knows, maybe a bite of carrot cake ;) We have played, accomplished, and traveled so many miles in the 15 years of partnership. He has been my everything for literally half my life. I owe him everything and more. Cheers to Ymir my big love bug.

First day of pasture time for the horses. Did you know that spring pasture can actually be dangerous for horses? I’m the spring (and fall) the sugar content in the grass is very high due to growth/stress. All of our horses and Whistle are very sensitive to sugar and can easily get very sick. This means that until now we have been hand grazing for a few minutes at a time and today’s pasture adventure was only 10 minutes. I will slowly increase their pasture time through the spring season. Even after that these guys will have limited grazing through the summer to help keep them healthy and fit.

We may be in a bit of a cold snap the next couple of days but the horses have begun their prep for the summer riding season! Slow, short walks up the road and around the field are the best way to build up muscle for both horse and rider 😉 Its hard to believe but April is nearly here. Check your emails this weekend for information on signing up for summer lessons.

What do the horses do in the winter? Mostly they wander from hay pile to hay pile wishing for spring. They take lots of naps in the sun. Poppy does Poppy things and keeps them all entertained. This is why it takes me a while to get back into lessons in the spring. They are very unfit come April when we begin our daily walks around the “neighborhood” and begin training for lessons come June. Warm wishes to all!

I am forever grateful to have the best ponies (and donkey) and people in my life. Amazing photos created by Donna Taylor Lombard and beautiful people to make my horses look good. These are only a few of my (50) favorite pictures. Thank you to everyone who supported our cause! We raised $300 towards flattening the arena.

Happy Sunday everyone! I know many of you following this page might already know me, and the horses pretty well but I thought I would share these great photos and tell you a little bit more. My journey with horses has been as long as I can remember. It would not have happened without some very key people in my life especially my Mom. Long drives to lessons, mucking out stalls to pay for board, being a “show mom” showing up when the horses didn’t feel well and everything in between I have the Best and most supportive mom in the world. (Yes she was behind the scenes for these photos too) I’ve had great instructors, mentors, guides, and inspirations through the years, especially the 10 years spent with the now MoonRise Theraputics crew.

All of this has lead me to where I am today. My mission with this program and my farm is to provide opportunities with horses that show and grow the connections between horses and humans. These opportunities will not be hindered by cost, and completely open to young and young at heart as we are never too young or old to learn.

Next Saturday, I am hosting a scholarship trail ride and BBQ. Please share or consider donating to our scholarship that allows dreams and my mission to become reality.

Did you know even horses see the dentist? Ymir, Mel (not pictured) and Whistle all saw Duncan yesterday. Their teeth were “floated” (filed) so that there weren’t any sharp edges or uneven wear.

Many of you know that my current "Riding Arena" is more of a temporary space. This fundraiser will allow me to create a safe, and permanent arena to serve even more people. A donation of any amount helps towards my goal of providing safe access to horses for everyone in our community.

Ever since I was young, my goal has been to have my own farm and live there with my horses. … Amy Kathryn Wood needs your support for Connected Hearts Arena

The last week of lessons is always bittersweet. It is my favorite because the students get to test out their horse skills in new ways, but it also means the end of summer and back to school. Check out the new skill one of my older students got to try on her last lesson: Ponying!
