Kim's Kitty Korner This page will provide valuable information on all things cat. Having worked with cats most of my life, I often say “cats are in my blood”.

You will learn feline veterinary care, with articles that feature education on everything from feline anatomy, diet, exercise, medicine-both traditional & holistic, grooming & funny stories My fascination with cats began when I was a young girl. I spent summers at my grandmother's house. There, I discovered furry little kittens and their mothers living in the small building where my grandmother st

ored her jars of yummy fruits and vegetables that she had canned throughout the summer. These cats were wild, which I now know is called “feral”. I made it my mission to tame these cute furry felines by catching them in burlap potato sacks. I loved them and fed them until they became my friends. This is when the “Cat Lady Kim” was born! I have worked as a nurse/technician treating cats for 30 years. For 20 of those years, I ran my own cat exclusive hospital. We also had specialty cat grooming and luxury boarding. I hope you will enjoy reading the articles that are to come. It is my goal to bond with the many cat lovers by exploring your questions and concerns regarding our furry friends; and maybe, just maybe open the door for others to share the emotional connection that is the magic we experience in truly loving our cats. I will accomplish this by providing interesting articles, full of insights, offering tips to help better understand our beloved felines. I intend to give you the tools to help your cats live long, comfortable lives. I will keep you up to date with the latest in feline medicine to help make the best medical recommendations, including alternative methods like essential oils and sound healing. I intend to also include some laughs with funny stories and lots of pictures. I will host live question and answer seminars monthly. In the meantime send any cat questions to me on Messenger or my email catsmeow0413@hotmail.

IT‘S TIME FOR A BATH….. MEEEOOOWW!

Grooming is a necessary part of cat care. Shedding hair is part natural life cycle of hair shafts. Cats, as well as humans, shed hair on a regular basis. We wash our hair, so why not wash your cats' hair too? Have you ever sat down wearing something black and stood up with a rear full of hair stuck to you? No matter how hard a cat tries to “keep themselves clean”, they still shed a lot of hair!

All cats shedding cycles are linked to number of daylight hours and season changes. Cats naturally shed in the spring and again in the fall in the United States. Now that I live in Costa Rica, the seasons are different (our spring is the states fall and our fall is the states spring). And Costa Rica's daylight hours pretty much stay the same, give or take 30 minutes or so, throughout the whole year! The sun sets here close to 6pm every day all year round.

Cats living inside with artificial cold/hot air and artificial light can affect shedding. Cats living outdoors only or ones that go in and out will also have some variances in shedding. Cats also shed during times of stress. A trip to the veterinarian is a perfect example. Anything like a visitor, if they are timid, to an illness can make a cat shed more hair.

And let's not forget fleas! If they happen to become infested by fleas, you are really going to see some shedding! A cat will tend to over-groom themselves to get rid of an irritating flea, and as a result, shed more hair. They in turn, swallow a great deal of hair while licking and chewing at fleas. I am sure we have all, at one time or another, squished our bare feet into a nice wet hairball on the floor. YUCK!

One of the first things to learn about a cat shedding their fur is that short hair or long hair doesn't make a difference – they both shed! Daily brushing or combing with the proper tool for your particular breed of cat can help A process called furminating also helps with shedding on some cats. To work best, you need a shedding shampoo and conditioner to use with the special shedding tool. Using a professional groomer will always get the best results. They will know your cat's hair type and decide on the best shampoo etc.

Matting on the cat can be another concern for a cat lover to consider grooming their furry ones. Again, it does not matter if the cat has long or short hair. Most all cats have some grease/oil in their coat. It is the oil in their coats along with the fine undercoat layer of hairs that cause the matting. Older cats or overweight cats that can no longer groom themselves will often tangle down their backs and hips. This seems to be a problem area for a lot of cats. Also arthritis may make it hard for some to reach certain spots. Cats will always try to keep themselves clean if they can!

It is understandable that most people are nervous about hurting their kitty by combing too hard or deep to remove a mat or tangle. You may be tempted to try to use a pair of scissors to cut out the tangle. This is a big NO NO! You can make the big mistake of cutting your cat's skin, which is quite thin. One small cut opens up a much larger area than you might expect. Please let a professional use electric cat grooming clippers. You may be surprised at what a trained professional groomer can accomplish with just a comb out, bath and blow dry.

There are grooming schools but few, if any, teach skills in cat grooming. It takes skill and practice to work with a sometimes frightened cat at the prospects of a hair cut or bath. It also takes a lot of patience. Understanding how they feel and observing body language is key. A gentle touch and loving soft words go a long way. Many people are afraid of the hissing and growling you sometimes hear. I just tell them that they are too cute for such bad language! Hahaha

Grooming is a very natural thing to a cat. They can readily understand if they are properly approached and then properly handled. Even if the cat gets a little fussy, they get over their moodiness pretty quick. Unless, of course, they do not agree with your choice of their hair style. Haha Then, it is VERY IMPORTANT to tell them how wonderful they look to boost their confidence. Cats are very in tune with our feelings and energy. Tell them they are beautiful and loved, and mean it!!

My moto is “Less is always Better with Cats”. They simply do not like to be restrained. You don't want to force them into a position to strongly. Starting at a young age will definitely get them more acquainted with grooming. You can also start an older cat with short combing sessions, and then give them a break. A little combing a few times a day or just once daily should work. Maybe approach them when they are napping and calm. Begin by gentle petting and soft words before you sneak in the comb. Notice how I say comb. A brush will not get anything but the outer hairs. Remember it is the undercoat that will start a tangle.

Usually the fussing will come when you get to a tangle or an “off limits” area. It may be best to use a professional groomer to give a trim to their private area (better known as a “potty or sanitary trim”). Many owners also have trouble combing the stomach area, which can also be trimmed by a groomer. You may even choose one of the popular haircuts for kitties. The lion cut, which makes your cat look like a male lion is adorable! Some people use haircuts for less shedding, while others cut the hair as a last resort because their cat has too many tangles to comb out.

This is why I recommend a grooming schedule. You can keep your cat's hair looking beautiful and alleviate the shedding and matting problems with regular baths and blow outs. (Even here in Costa Rica heat, the blow dry is necessary. It makes the hair so fluffy and will not let the hair dry in dread locks!) No matter how you look at it, you and your cat will be much happier after a groom. Using a professional groomer will be the best for both as well. Hopefully, you can find a place that specializes in cats only. I am considering starting one here in Costa Rica.

So how about a relaxing day at the spa? Hair, nails done with or without colored nail tips, aroma therapy, etc. Sounds like fun! Right?! This could be you or your cat!

OK sorry for not posting lately. I had my first visitor from the states!

After that, it was time to give all 8 of my cats a bath! I sure do miss my cat hospital that came with a groomer. Here's to your aching back Colleen. Thanks for all the years of loving cat grooming!

Trying to convince people here in Costa Rica that cats actually need baths! Lol

OK I did it! I'm now writing for this magazine here in Costa Rica. I am also looking into how I can help the cats in this area by working with our local rescue organization el Refugio. After 20 plus years of taking care of cats in the states, it seems only natural that I continue here.

A CAT CAN BE GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH

WE ALL LOVE THE WONDERFUL COMPANIONSHIP OUR CATS PROVIDE. THEY LOVE US UNCONDITIONALLY, OFFERING BOUNDLESS AFFECTION. AFTER A STRESSFUL DAY, OUR FURRY FRIENDS SEEM TO KNOW JUST WHAT TO DO TO DIVERT OUR WORRIES. WITH ONE SILLY ANTIC, GIVING US A GOOD LAUGH, WE START TO RELAX AS OUR TROUBLES SEEM TO SLIP AWAY.

CAT LOVERS HAVE LONG KNOWN THAT OUR CATS MAKE US HAPPY, BUT DID YOU KNOW THAT STUDIES HAVE ACTUALLY PROVEN THAT KEEPING A PET HAS A POSITIVE IMPACT ON YOUR HEALTH, ESPECIALLY IF THE PET IS A CAT?

STUDIES SHOW THAT HAVING CONTACT WITH A CAT IS VERY CALMING, AND WE NOW HAVE THE MEDICAL FACTS TO BACK THIS UP. VITAL SIGNS TAKEN AFTER AN INDIVIDUAL'S INTERACTION WITH A CAT SHOW POSITIVE EFFECTS ON BLOOD PRESSURE, PULSE, AND BREATHING FREQUENCY. THESE RESULTS ARE SIMILAR TO THE BODY’S CONDITION AFTER DEEP MEDITATION. SOME TESTS HAVE EVEN INDICATED THAT OWNING A CAT MAY REDUCE YOUR CHANCE OF HEART DISEASE BY REDUCING YOUR STRESS LEVELS.

RESEARCHERS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA HAVE FOUND THAT OVER A 20 YEAR PERIOD, THOSE WHO HAD NEVER OWNED A CAT SHOWED A 40% HIGHER RISK OF DEATH DUE TO A HEART ATTACK AND A 30% HIGHER RISK OF DEATH DUE TO ANY OTHER CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE THAN PREVIOUS OR CURRENT CAT OWNERS.

A STUDY OF HYPERTENSIVE STOCK BROKERS SHOWED ONES THAT HAD A CAT AS A COMPANION LOWERED THEIR RISK OF A STROKE.

OUR CATS HAVE THIS UNEXPLAINED ABILITY TO SENSE WHEN WE ARE STRESSED. I PERSONALLY HAVE HAD ONE OF MY CATS COME TO LICK MY TEARS WHEN I WAS SAD. CATS WILL BE DRAWN TO YOU WHEN YOU ARE UPSET. IF YOU STROKE THEIR SOFT FUR AND FOCUS ON THEIR LOVING FACE, YOUR PROBLEMS WILL BECOME TRIVIAL. NOTHING IS MORE SOOTHING TO ME THAN LISTENING TO THEM PURR IN MY EAR. A KITTY CUDDLED UP BESIDE YOU, PURRING AND KNEADING (OR "MAKING BISCUITS", AS I CALL IT) IS WHAT CAT PEOPLE CALL MUSIC TO OUR EARS.

To all my cat rescue people! You know who you are - even here in Costa Rica.

🌹🌹🌹All the little cat spirits were crossing the rainbow bridge when one of them looked back and saw some cats' souls laying on the other side of the bridge, not moving.

“Who are they?” he asked the cat next to him.

“Oh, don’t you know they are the souls who had no owner in life and knew no love like we did."

“So what are they laying there for?” he asked “Why don’t they cross over like us?”

“They can’t.” replied his new friend “Only pets with owners can cross."

Just then all the souls on the other side of the bridge sat up and looked down the road.

"What’s happening?" asked the little cat. “Watch!” replied his friend.

Whereupon a woman was seen walking towards the bridge. She looked to her left and then to her right then opened her arms wide and all the patiently waiting souls got up and went to her.

She knelt and touched each and every spirit in turn.

They then all proceeded to cross the bridge together.

“Who is that?” he asked his friend.

“That is someone special.” replied his friend “She is a rescuer." 🐈🐈‍⬛🐈

MAINE C**N

A GENTLE GIANT

The Maine C**n Cat is one of the oldest natural breeds in North America. It is not a product of crossbreeding other cats, but a product of the natural world. It is the biggest , longest, heaviest pure breed cat there is. They are specifically native to the state of Maine, where it is the official State Cat.

The Maine C**n is noted for its large bone structure, long flowing coat with a broad chest and a heavily furred long tail that can reach up to 14 inches long. In 2006 the Guinness World Records named a male Maine C**n the “longest cat”. He measured 48 inches from the tip of his nose to the tip of this tail and weighed 35 pounds! Most male Maine C**ns weigh from 12 up to 22 pounds! Females may reach as much as 15, both having very statuesque bodies, not chubbies!! Maine C**ns do not reach their full potential size until they are 3 to 4 years old. They can be seen in a variety of colors with cute tufts of hair on the tips of their ears. They also have longer fur on their underneath stomach area and hind quarters presumed to be used with their tails to help keep them warm during the cold winters in Maine in the snow.

The origin of the Maine C**ns are unknown. There are many theories and folktales. One story involves Marie Antoinette, the Queen of France who was executed in 1793. The story says that before her death, Antoinette attempted to escape France with the help of Captain Samuel Clough. She loaded Clough’s ship with her most prized possessions, including 6 of her favorite long-haired cats. Although Antoinette did not make it to the United States, her pets safely reached the shores of Maine, where they mated with other cats and evolved into the modern breed of the Maine C**n.

Another folktale involves Captain Charles C**n, an English seafarer who kept long-haired cats aboard his ships. Whenever C**n’s ships would anchor in the New England ports, the felines would exit the ship and mate with the local feral cat population. When long-haired kittens began appearing, they were referred to as one of C**n’s cats.

One funny folktale, due to the biological impossibility, is the story of a Maine C**n resulting from the mating of a cat and a raccoon. It is understandable because of some of the Maine C**n cat’s characteristics. For example, the most common color is a brown tabby with a bushy tail that looks like a raccoon’s tail. They seem to have a fascination with water, often putting their paws in their water bowls to “play” with their water. They will lick the water from their paws and also “play” with their food. You would not be surprised to find one of their toys in their water bowl. This resembles how raccoons wash their food before eating.

Maine C**ns are known as the “gentle giants” and possess above-average intelligence, making them easy to train. They are very loyal to their family. They are not generally known as lap cats, but their disposition makes them very relaxed around dogs, other cats and children. They are too busy playing to be your lazy lap cat, often being nicknamed the “clowns” of the feline world.
