LET'S WELCOME OCTOBER! 👏
The start of the last quarter of 2021 😮...There’s a lot to talk about in October, such as remembering our hardworking vet techs, recognizing the dangers of pet obesity with national pet wellness month and educating ourselves on pit bulls.

Halloween also falls in October, so we need to be vigilant to keep chocolate and sweets out of our pets’ paws.

Any other celebration we should mention?
Have a wonderful month!

When your cat "winks" at you, is it flirting? 😸

That might be one way to interpret the kitty eye communication, sometimes called a cat kiss. A slow cat-eye blink is a wonderful compliment. It is a non-threat signal that cats use with each other as well as humans they are comfortable with.

You can send the same signal to your cat, slowly shutting and then opening your eyes. Chances are, your cat will return the cat-kiss eye blink.

Does your cat do this to you? 😺

WHY MY DOG EATS GRASS? 👀
Eating grass Is not in any way dangerous to your dog. It is something their ancestors probably did to boost up their fiber intake; even wild dogs occasionally take a cut of grass down their throats now and then. But with all the tasty treats and delicious dog food you provide for them, many owners are still surprised by this funny behavior dogs to show occasionally. The way we see it, maybe they want a taste of grassy salads to quench their appetite curiosity. The old myth is that they eat grass to help them vomit, but that has been debunked. Nutritional deficit most notably lack of fiber is usually one of the reasons why dogs nibble on grasses.

Other reasons would be that they do find the taste very good and yummy and can’t simply get enough of it. Some it could be boredom that leads them into eating grass while for others it is simply curiosity. How does this grass taste like? Is probably the question they asked themselves before chewing on it?

Although eating grass itself is safe and not dangerous for your dog, care must be taken to make sure the grasses have not been sprayed with pesticides or insecticides that if consumed may be harmful and poisonous to the dog.

Dogs eating grasses is a funny behavior found in most pups, just keep an eye out for them as they play with the grasses.

If your cat is interrupting your time on the phone, at the keyboard, or when reading, it's jealous of you giving attention to these objects rather than to itself. 😸

👉 The solution is to give your cat more one-on-one time as well as interactive toys to keep it stimulated.

WHY DO DOGS CHASE THEIR TAILS? 🐶

👉Tail chasing is usually found among puppies, but it is not strange to see it among older dogs. It can be very hilarious watching your pup chase around their tail with the hope that they are going to catch it anytime soon. They only stop when they finally realize that their tail is only but an extension of their body rather than an “enemy” to be caught.

So, owners worry when the tail chasing is persistent (especially if the dog is in its adult age). Reports show that it could mean there might be an underlying medical cause or cognitive issues. But you do not need to worry or raise any alarms especially when your dog is still young.

Tail chasing is just part of their growth process and exploration. In most cases, they are just playing when they chase their tail. It is a source of entertainment and a way to break boredom for them. And as an onlooker, watching your pup chase around its tail in circles can be very funny if not hilarious. They usually grow out of this funny behavior so no need to be worried.

WHEN MY CAT WANTS TO EAT MY FOOD 😸

Reasons👇

✔ Cats are curious

✔Your cat has acquired some bad habits:

Avoid offering your cat tidbits of food from your plate as this encourages the bad habit. Such snacking will also diminish your cat’s appetite for regular meals.

✔The cat food is spoiled or out of date:

Check the food and ensure it has not gone bad. Store your cat’s food in a dry, cool place to increase its shelf life. Also store it far from areas where there are temperature fluctuations.
Poor storage conditions can cause your cat’s food to go bad even before its expiry date.

✔Change in cat food brand:

It is not advisable to be changing the cat’s brand so often, as it can upset your cat’s digestive system.

If you are switching to a different flavor, make the change gradually, by mixing the old brand with the new one, until your cat gets used to it.

You can also mix in a small amount of canned food to stimulate your cat’s appetite for its food.

Conclusion👇

It might be ok to occasionally give your cat human food. However, since cats have different nutritional requirements from us, do not encourage this behavior. Pet food has the right amounts of proteins to get your cat healthy.

Establish why your cat is refusing to eat its food and address the problem using the solutions above. You can keep your cat from eating human food by avoiding giving it human food as treats and feed it before your mealtimes, so it does not nag you.

MY DOG MANAGES TO TAKE UP THE WHOLE SOFA, SO I HAVE TO SIT ON THE FLOOR 🐶

There is not just one reason as to why dogs steal their owner’s spots. Although there are some negative reasons why, such as dominance, and disrespect, there are also positive reasons, such as showing loyalty and love.

It’s important to look at the context of the situation. For example, if your dog is nudging you roughly and growling to get you to move, this is obviously a problem, but if they take your spot when you leave, and then moves when you come back, they might actually be showing you respect. When you get up, and your dog takes your spot, it could also be a sign of disrespect, but it also could be a sign that she knows you’re valuing it, and they are actually saving it for you.

Just like humans, dogs have some complex ways of showing their emotions. Dogs that let you sit down first and then find a spot beside you, acknowledge that you are the “alpha dog”. Dogs are pack animals and have been showing respect to dominant dogs for generations. Owners have become the new “alpha dogs” within the home. If they constantly take your spot and/or try to push you away from your cozy spot, it may not be respecting the fact that you are the leader of the pack, and it might actually be trying to challenge your authority. They also may be exerting territorial aggression, although this is not always the case. Many dogs may lightly nudge you when you are sitting down in your spot or try to sit very close to you. A lot of times, this just means they are seeking your attention and expressing their cuddly love.

MY CAT LIKES PLAYING WITH THE CURTAIN/ BLIND

So, your cat clawed his way to the top of your custom draperies and left them in shreds. The bad news is that you can’t blame your cat for this because it’s your fault. The good news is that you can do something about it.

Regardless of age, gender, breed, and whether they have been “fixed,” your cat is simply behaving normally. Cats are naturally inquisitive, and it’s their natural inclination to want to climb.

Kittens, like children, learn by exploring, experimenting, and playing, and climbing is an important part of this. We don’t want to prevent them from doing it. We want to give them viable alternatives and reward their [good] behavior with treats.

Suppressing a kitten’s natural behavior constitutes an unwarranted punishment that may potentially cause aggression in the growing cat.

A better approach is to provide your young cat with appropriate climbing alternatives that are particularly appealing. For example, provide a comfortable resting spot at the top of a cat tree and place high-value (i.e., favorite) treats there, hang toys with feathers at various levels, keep plenty of engaging cat toys around the house, and play with your kitten for a few minutes every day. If he likes catnip, use that to coax him toward a cat tree, scratching post, or toys.

Does your cat do this? 😸

MY DOG REFUSES TO GIVE UP THAT OLD AND SMELLY TOY 🐶

Dogs use their senses of smell and taste to process external stimuli.

Most dogs have that favorite toy, you know the one – that has been torn, is dingy from dirt, has a broken squeaker, and produces a rather pungent odor – but it is still its favorite.

One they have a favorite; the consequences are not sweet sometimes.

Over time, those toys may develop a sour or rotten smell with is hard to remove with a simply cleaning. The smell itself may not be the fault of the dog toys or the result of frequent use only, there may be other potential issues like your dog bad breath, an intestinal worn infection, injury and obstruction for example.

Try rotating your Dog’s toys and/or try finding a new one or similar to the one.

Find ways to make those toys more engaging, whether it’s through human interaction (a game of fetch) or yummy treats.

Good luck and have fun!🧡😍

TAKING CARE OF KITTEN: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW 😸🐾

Raising a kitten is one of the most fun things you’ll ever do, but it’s also a big responsibility.

Kittens are so cute, it’s understandable that cat owners sometimes wish their kittens could stay kittens forever. This is the when you, as the pet parent, lay the foundation for your cat’s future health and behavior. Not to mention, it’s the stage where you have to decide what food to buy, what vet to visit, and where to place the litterbox. Fortunately, all of your hard work during these first few months is compensated by loads of snuggling and adorability.

There are plenty of things to consider when having a kitten and raising one, but here we share some of them.

Is there any other you could share? 👀👇

YOU MIGHT HAVE CATS OR PLANTS, BOTH BOTH? 😸🌿

Having a green thumb will only get you so far with houseplants if you have one (or more) cats in the house determined to make trouble.

There are potentially a few different problems you can have with cats and plants. The first is that some cats like to chew on leaves, leading to damaged plants or sick kitties.

Next is the simple fact that some cats are nosy and will play around plants, and knock things over for the fun of it.

Another unpleasant problem can be cats who like to dig in the potted dirt and use it as their litter box. This is very unsanitary and will certainly kill your plants if it continues.

So, what can you do to keep your cats out of your indoor plants?
Before you decide between your plants and your pets, try a few of these techniques to help everyone get along.

1 – Use a Spray Bottle
2 – Try a Repellent Spray
3 – Add a Layer of Stone Mulch
4 – Alter the Placement of Your Plants
5 – Create Unpleasant Surroundings
6 – Clean the Litter Box
7 – Provide Plants for Your Cats to distract them away from yours

💥IMPORTANT💥
Watch for Toxic Plants!
Until you are 100% positive your cats aren’t going to chew on your plants, you should be very cautious about toxicity. Several common houseplants are very dangerous to pets, and you should be aware of the risks.

HARNESSES VS COLLARS: WHAT IS BEST FOR YOUR DOG ACCORDING TO VETS 🐶

No matter what type of dog you have, one thing's for sure: They need to go out on walks. The two types of leash attachments that you can use are harnesses and collars.

Whether you just got a new dog and aren't sure which to use or you are looking to switch things up, it's important to know the pros and cons for both dog harnesses and collars before making a decision.

👉 Harnesses are usually the best choice for walking dogs because they don't put pressure on the neck.
👉 But collars are generally more comfortable and have a place to hold an ID tag.
👉 You should use a harness and not a collar if you have a dog prone to breathing issues (like a pug).

WHY DOES MY DOG SIT ON MY FEET? 😕

Does your dog sit on your feet or back up to sit between your legs when you're out and about and people approach the two of you? Or maybe you've seen other dogs do this. What does it mean?

👉Dog Behavior Can Be Tricky to Interpret

When people see a dog sitting between their owner's legs or right on their feet, they often interpret it as protectiveness. That misinterpretation can be cemented when the dog growls if someone approaches.

But the truth is that a dog that is engaging in this behavior is almost always feeling anxious. Being as close as possible to the owner, including right under or on top of them, helps the dog feel safer.

That isn't to say that dog may not bite if approached—they certainly may. But it's not usually aggressiveness, dominance, or protectiveness that causes the bite in this circumstance. It's fear and anxiety. A dog backing up to sit under or on top of their owner should not be approached.

Of course, not all feet-sitting is anxiety. If a dog tends to be underfoot at all times in the home, it may have to do with anxiety, but it can also relate to boredom or being territorial of the owner against other pets in the home, or simply because they want to show you or feel affection and love.

There are two images in this post, which one relates more to you? 😏

21/07/2021

😸😺Countless cat lovers have experienced the less-than-pleasant sensation of stepping barefoot onto a wet, furry, and sometimes still-warm hairball left on the floor. Whether your cat has coughed up her first hairball or just one of many, it’s good to know what is and is not normal about cat hairballs.

WHAT ARE CAT HAIRBALLS?
It is one of those things that is exactly what it sounds like: a ball of hair, originating from a cat. The scientific name for hairballs is trichobezoar.

Hairballs occur when cats ingest their own hair while grooming themselves. Although hair usually passes through the cat’s digestive tract (where it is eventually p**ped out), sometimes hair remains inside the stomach.

Since hair cannot be digested, any hair that doesn’t pass out of the stomach and into the intestines balls up inside the stomach, where it remains. Cats often “cough up” (more specifically, vomit up) hairballs, so many times cat owners find them on the floor or furniture.

If the cat does not expel a large hairball (either by vomiting it up or passing it through the digestive system and out of the body by defecating), it can cause a potentially life-threatening obstruction of the intestinal tract.

DON'T IGNORE CAT HAIRBALLS
Something to keep in mind: cat hairballs are not “normal.”

Although it is normal for a cat to ingest some hair while self-grooming, in a healthy cat, the hair should pass through the digestive tract and be expelled from the body in the stool. Cats that cough up hairballs more than once or twice a month should be examined by your veterinarian. Cats that experience recurring hairballs require some lifestyle changes to reduce the incidence of hairballs.

How is your experience with this if any? 👇

14/07/2021

IF YOUR DOG IS NOT EATING HIS REGULAR MEAL BUT IS EATING HIS TREATS, you should take action to find out the cause of this change of behavior.

If your normally high-appetite dog develops a selective loss of appetite, you should immediately try to find out the cause of the behavioral change.

The following are some of the reasons why your dog won’t eat their food but will eat treats:

👉Medical Issues
If your dog suddenly hates their food, it could point to a possible medical condition that needs to be addressed quickly. Check for signs of illness by observing your dog’s behavior, p**p and urine to determine if there is any change that may have occurred.
Regardless of whether you’ve detected some illness or not, you should visit your vet to have your tail-wagging friend examined.

The vet may be interested in knowing the changes in behavior that you observed, the color of urine, whether the p**p is smelly, solid or dog is having diarrhea, any changes in the environment that may cause your dog to be depressed, etc.

👉Dental Issues
Swollen jaws and injuries in the mouth can be painful not only to your dog but to humans as well.

If your dog has swollen jaws or gum disease, they can experience pain and discomfort when chewing and swallowing their regular food.

This may force them to skip mealtime and opt for treats because they are soft and gentle to the gums.

👉Your Dog Doesn’t Like Their Food
Has your dog’s regular diet changed in the recent days? If they are unhappy with the current diet, chances are that they will not eat it until they see their familiar diet or an alternative meal that they are happy with.
Similarly, if your dog has eaten the same diet for a long time, they may be bored with it, and are only interested in the treats and food scraps that taste a little different. If that is the case, try different dog food brands to test what they do or don't like.

MY CAT LIKES PLAYING AND LAYING ON PAPER 😸
Unlike cardboard, paper is easy for a cat’s tough claws to shred. If your cat plays with toilet roll or papers in general, you’ll know how fun this is for felines. Shredding provides pleasure to cats for these reasons:

👉Stimulating hunting instinct, mimicking tearing prey apart
👉Fun crinkling noises
👉Releasing tension, anxiety, or nervous energy
👉Claiming new territory with its scent glands

Only be concerned by this behavior if your cat shreds paper exclusively to eat. As discussed previously, this could pertain to feline hunting instincts, but could also be a sign of a problem. If your cat will not eat its meals but devours shredded paper, you may check with its vet right away.

In many respects, cats lie on paper for the same reason that they lie on dirty laundry. Paper provides a unique texture, separate from the standard floor, that can be claimed. Let your cat have fun with paper. In most cases, it’s a harmless activity. Just avoid leaving out paper that’s coated in chemical substances, such as ink and dyes.

Also, just lying on paper is a fascinated new experience for cats that brings then exploring textures, sounds, smells, tastes, etc.

RETURNING TO WORK AND LEAVING MY PET HOME ALONE!😕

With many of us working from home during the pandemic, we have gotten used to having our best friends around all the time. But with offices reopening, some pets and their owners might be in for a rough adjustment.

Even if you want to hire a pet sitter to help fill your pet's day, it may be difficult to find one. Now that many humans are starting to return to the office, those sitters have more work than they can handle.

Some people have made a career change, such as a job with more flexible hours or remote working, because of their relationships with their pets during the lockdown, but others are not that lucky and need to go back to the office, so as more of us leave lockdown, there might be signs of separation anxiety include dogs licking their lips or paws repeatedly, and cats having accidents outside their litter boxes or demonstrating destructive behavior.

So, what should you do to get your pet ready for your return to commuting and long hours away from them?

Here are some steps to help you put your pets at ease:
1. Get your pet ready for the new routine.
2. For your health and your pet (in this case this advice is mostly for dogs), walk them before and after work.
3. Pets have gotten used to on-demand, unlimited
water and food. So try to set your pet up with regular watering and feeding.
4. Don't make a big deal about leaving home and when you return.
5. Look for signs your dog isn't coping well with the change in their day.
6. Don't feel too guilty about being away all day.

Let us know if this might be happening to you, and what are you planning to do?

Hopefully this helps, read the full article in our link.
