Expert advice for cat owners as avian influenza surges
To prevent H5N1 avian influenza from infecting pet cats, experts recommend that cats be kept indoors, their vaccinations should be up to date, and they should not be fed raw meat, poultry or dairy products. Cats exhibiting severe respiratory distress, low appetite, fever, eye or nasal discharge, or neurological problems such as tremors and seizures should be seen by a veterinarian immediately, says veterinarian Susan Nelson, a clinical professor at Kansas State University.
