This morning I planted out the third round of cabbage (mini) and broccoli (Waltham) seedlings. I know I am pushing my luck because it’s almost spring but I have plenty of spare beds to start my summer crops and if they go to seed the chickens will get a feast. I’ll keep you posted on the success/failure of my late brassica crop attempt 🙏 I hope I can sneak in more brassicas before it gets too hot brocoli 🥦🥬

Yesterday we lost our ram Rodger 😢 He ate too many grains and suffered from acidosis causing a bacterial infection in his rumen. After a vet visit and a lot of nursing he gave up fighting last night. We couldn’t get his temperature down and so his body shut down. I am gutted. I will miss Rodger and his vibrant cheeky ram personality. I’ll even miss his ramming attempts ☺️ Till we meet again my handsome boy 💔

On the left is a store bought organic broccoli and on the right is one I’ve grown on my own. They both taste better than the conventionally grown, with no chemical after taste. I urge you all to source organic produce 🙏 The more consumers demand it the more will be produced. Yes it’s more expensive but the health cost is even more expensive..

Conventionally grown broccoli is quite heavily sprayed. In Australia DCPA is the active ingredient in the herbicide Dynamo 750. It is used for pre-emergence w**d control in certain vegetables such as cabbages onions beans broccoli cauliflowers and also used for w**d control in strawberries, cotton, lucerne, and perennial grass.

A couple of days ago US EPA issued an emergency order against DCPA pesticide use. Here is an extract from a news article:

The herbicide dimethyl tetrachloroterephthalate, also known as DCPA or Dacthal, is used on crops such as broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage and onions. Fetuses exposed to it could suffer from low birth weight, impaired brain development, decreased I.Q., and impaired motor skills later in life, the E.P.A. said.

“DCPA is so dangerous that it needs to be removed from the market immediately,”

I couldn’t wait any longer! I harvested the first cabbage for the season. There are many more to come so I’m happy to pick them smallish. They do so well even into summer. 🥬
