And while we are happy to announce Wick, Revna & Trauma are 100% healthy, we also received the discouraging news that both Wick & Trauma are DM CARRIERS.
•••What is DM?
Degenerative Myelopathy, DM
The dog equivalent of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig’s disease, DM is a progressive degenerative disorder of the spinal cord. Because the nerves that control the hind limbs are the first to degenerate, the most common clinical signs are back muscle wasting and gait abnormalities.
•••Who is affected?
NO ONE! It takes two copies of the gene to be affected. Both are only carriers meaning they received one copy.
•••What does this mean?
DM Carriers can only be bred to DM Clear to insure all puppies are Clear or Carriers and NOT affected.
EXAMPLES:
Breeding Wick (DM carrier) and Revna (DM clear) is safe and will result in healthy puppies.
Breeding Wick (Carrier) and Trauma (Carrier) is NOT safe or acceptable and will NOT happen.
We will either outsource or acquire a DM Clear male to mate with Trauma in the future.
