Make Them Carry Their Saddle, by Hannah Campbell Zapletal

A father of a darling girl and I were talking last week and he said that he wanted his daughter to ride more and not have to do the work part of the catching, grooming, and saddling. I smiled as I explained.

Riding horses is a combination of strength, timing, and balance. Kids in this country are physically weak (unless they are actively involved with weight training and physical conditioning 4+ times a week.)

When you walk out to the field, you are clearing your stress from being under fluorescent lights all day; feeling the sun soak into your bones. As your body moves on uneven surfaces, it strengthens your legs and core.

When you groom your horse (especially currying), you are toning your arms and stabilizing your core.

When you carry your saddle, your arms, chest, and back are doing isolated strengthening work.

Being near horses, calms and makes you tune into the splendor of these empathetic animals.

When you ride at a posting trot, it’s equivalent to a slow jog calorie burn wise.

After a lesson, the riders are physically tired and mentally quiet and balanced.

Horses feel your heart beat and mirror your emotions back.

Riding large and somewhat unpredictable animals makes you resilient and pushes your expectations.

Working with horses is so much more than learning how to ride.

So parents, make your children carry their saddles. Don’t do the hard parts for them, unless as long term it actually hurts them. To advance with their riding, they must get stronger. You can help by doing the high parts.

Hey folks, this is one of our favorite causes - and this is a very limited opportunity if you are looking for your next heart horse.

Liberty, Liberty, Liberty

A generous donation of a generously proportional horse, Libby was one of our nurse mare foals. Her owners loved her deeply. She was always given the best of care and copious amounts of carrots and apples (she arrived here with a new trashcan-full!) She had been trained “professionally” and spent some time in the 4-H ring.

Time (that heartless wretch) has a way of taking its toll … and it did just that to her owner. When her owner got to the point that she could no longer care for Libby, she sent her home to the L.C.C.

We’ve had her here for several months. Though she hadn’t been ridden for 10 years, we jumped on her and off she went–as good as gold! She is super sweet, gets along with all our other horses. Her breeding is supposedly SPOTTED DRAFT and QTR. I can certainly vouch for the spotted Draft! She has not been taught to drive. I see no reason why she couldn’t learn. We have taken her into the woods, through water, vehicles are no problem, etc., etc. This is a wonderful mare with a heart full of love. She will make a terrific family horse and could certainly pack any husband about (given that he’s not a dead beginner.) Her movement would work well for an up-and-coming Dressage rider. She really could do just about anything. What a great police horse she would make. Sure, she could stand to lose a couple of 100 lbs and needs to be conditioned. That’s the fun part. Once she’s dialed back in, the sky’s the limit.

She’s one I’m having a difficult time letting go of. However, I just bought my first TON of foal milk for the season. The price went to $145 a bag, making a ton cost $7,285.50. (That put a damper on my day…) So it’s time for Liberty to do what she was intended to–help other foals the way that she once was.

My vet said she felt that I should ask $5K for her, given the current equine price climate. I will entertain reasonable offers from appropriate homes. I’ve always said, “Don’t let our suggested prices limit your generosity.”

The lucky person who ends up with this Big, Beautiful, Bodacious Bundle of Love will be the envy of all their equine-minded friends. She is a rare treat.

If you meet our requirements for adoptions ( Last Chance Corral) and would be interested in adopting Liberty, while helping save this year’s foals, give me a call. (That’s pretty much the only way to reach me directly.) Victoria 740-594-4336.

We always give priority to placements where these horses will be used for the good of their community. Just as we rely on the kindness of strangers to offer these animals asylum, it’s nice to know that some of them can give back to those very strangers by way of community service, be that mounted patrol, park rangers and or assisted therapy. If the horse is suitable emotionally and physically and enjoys the job, we want to see that happen. What a world it would be–where we all take care of each other.

Hopefully, you only blanket when absolutely necessary but this PSA is critical: snaps facing in!

Tuesday Tip!

As the weather drops, many of us are putting on blankets.

We thought now would be a good time to remind everyone to make sure your clips/snaps are facing inwards towards your horse.

This prevents the clips/snaps from opening and your horse getting caught.

It's hard to believe it's been 3 years since the last wagontrain, but I am working on a new wagontrain and hope I can get all the logistics and scouting done by the end of the year. This wagontrain will involve the most history of any wagontrain I've put on. I plan on a 5 day wagontrain that will take us thru some of the most history filled areas of Georgia, civil war era plantations that are listed on the National Register of Historic places, pre civil war era churches and Magnolia Springs State Park that is on the site of Camp Lawton that was the Civil War prison and said to be the largest prison in the world. We will be going by multiple historic sites everyday and camp at some of the most historic sites. If you love Civil War era history or just love driving or riding your horse thru 300 year old oak tree lined roads this will be an experience you will not want to miss this wagontrain, the first and only time a wagontrain of this magnitude has traveled thru this area since the Civil War in December 1864. I have worked hard on getting permission from private landowners and the State to get permission to bring a wagontrain to these sites, this could be your only opportunity to experience this history filled wagontrain/trailride. I hope you will put this wagontrain on your schedule of things TO DO in January 2023. I will be.posting updates.
Reliving southern history on each wagontrain.
