Ever wondered why retrievers are such foodies?
One of the reasons is that almost 25% of Retrievers have a mutation in a gene that tells them they're full.

Dogs, like humans have a gene called POMC (pro-opiomelanocortin) which sends two chemical messages from the body to the brain. The first, β-MSH is concerned with weight control, while the second β-endorphin connects food with reward pathways.

What this means is that affected dogs are incapable of feeling full - they are much more likely to weigh more, and have a higher body fat composition.

There's no treatment for dogs with this mutation, but it can be managed with owner's vigilance, exercise and careful diet selection. Selecting a diet that is low in carbohydrates and calories whilst providing all of their nutritional needs is key to keeping the extra kgs off.
