Thanks to a hard working group of people, many horses are being purchased at auction and rehomed rather than being shipped for meat.
By posting photos of horses at auction, along with any known details, they have enabled people who can't go to the auction to see these animals. By acting as proxy bidders, and transporters they are able to get those animals out.
About 80 horses, from weanling to seniors have been saved this fall. Being brought into rescue, and foster homes is only the first step. These horses need homes.
Some, like Elric the 15year old ex-Amish work horse have impeccable manners and quickly adjust to being a pleasure horse. Many are untrained, unhanded and require a lot of time and patience before they are riding horses. Others, used as breeding stock until they no longer produce, are barely halter trained.
Shalom, a 16-18yo Welsh pony type was at a rural auction. She suffers from heaves (similar to COPD in people) and chronic founder. To many, she was unviable and passed over. I was sent a picture of her, and made aware of her condition. Thanks to an unnamed savior, she is now home. Her sponsorship ensures that her monthly costs are covered. I have time for her, but can't make the financial commitment. For her, she doesn't know anything other than she's getting healthier by the day.
Elric and Shalom are the first two residents that no longer have to worry. These two are home.
