Dewey passed away today
He crossed over about 1230.
He had several grandmal seizures one after one. We had to rush him to the vet to go to the rainbow bridge. He is now buried in our backyard.

Hey, it's me, Dewey. While my mommy Julie was away yesterday, Grammy and Aunt Sam took me and Ivy to pet smart and I met some person in a red suit. Grammy told me to sit with this person and look at her and she walked away and waved her box called a phone. Then she came back and got me and tried giving me a cookie. I didn't want a cookie, I wanted mommy. She said I could not tell mommy I saw the person In red until a day called Christmas. I don't keep secrets from mommy but I try. Then we went into the car again and soon I saw mommy for a few minutes and then mommy left again. I cried. Mommy keeps leaving. Then Grammy and aunt Sam took me all over and then I went to the big M and got a burger. Yum! I tried giving them my order of everything they had, but they didn't speak pug! Then I went home and mommy was home! I didn't lose her! I kissed her and loves her until I curled in my bed and fell sleep.

Dewey is being silly today! He stole my teddy bear and tried playing tug with him. Then I threw my stuffed peep and he chased after it and brought it back to me. Then he keeps climbing me and dancing. Mommy made him stop. Now he wants my dinner, so I'm going to make him a plate. It's turkey and mashed potatoes. He's not sick no more and gaining weight. Yippee. I love Dewey. It's the second best day of my life! My first is when I met the lady who gave me Dewey. Her name is Miss Edie. I'm thankful for her. She gave me Dewey and saved Dewey too for me and Dewey. Thank you.

Since Julie is always protecting Dewey, tonight, Dewey stands guard while Julie sleeps on the living room floor. It's not a usual behavior for her, so he's right by her, protecting her. She's just so exhausted from getting up and cooking from 10am till we ate at 3, then by 430 she was sleeping.

Well Dewey woke up like someone gave him sugar. He ran down the stairs and woke me up on the couch and then ran outside, his tail wiggling so fast, like a propeller waiting to take off! Then he ran around the house and played for a bit and now is taking a nap. I think he's doing much better. He asked for his breakfast and is super happy. Tail keeps wagging.... His ear infection is still present, but the vet said it can take a few weeks to a few months to be fully gone, but whatever even he had 2 weeks ago, whether a stroke or a vestibular event, he's doing so much better.

While Dewey feels blah ( he just had some benadryl to help his dizziness), Dewey always has time to give Julie a picture. He has his head propped up on a home made pillow made by our senior neighbor Carlotta. He loves that pillow.

Otherwise, Dewey is eating much better then ever before. He loves his new dry food! He loves fresh chicken and hot dogs. He's iffy on beef though. I wonder if that adds to the nausea. He's been off his meclazine since Friday which is wonderful, but he can still have days where he's dizzy cause of the ear infection that is still being treated in his body. I really wish vrec caught the ear infection/upper respiratory infection when I brought him in last Saturday, when he had the yellow mucus instead of just pushing it off as nothing. Thankfully, Carbondale Vet saw exactly what I did and he's being treated for 2 weeks work of antibiotics. Just they started 5 days after vrec. So Dewey is going to need some time, love and sleep but he's doing well according to the vet, so keep the prayers and well wishes coming.

Today, Dewey came downstairs with Julie at 6 am. Of course Dewey was carried. I woke him up and he wasn't happy. I cleaned his face to make sure no boogies were there and put his eye drops in. Then I have him the other half of the ceaser soft food from last night. He ate all of that so I opened a can of high protein wet food and he ate half a can of that(13 oz can, so half that) and I slipped his pill (clindamaycin-an anti biotic for the upper respiratory infection) and then I gave him some water from the dropper till he kept pushing me away. Poor lil man is still dizzy, but he's trying. Hopefully the high protein wet food will help him too. He should perk up a bit about 10 am, but if not, he's eating and drinking good and doc said he's not dehydrated so I just gotta keep helping him for a bit. Some dogs take 2 weeks to make progress. He did alot in the first 2 days so now he needs to rest.

Dewey went to our normal vet today for a checkup from Sunday's emergency visit. He also woke up with boogers in his eyes, making them closed. We cleaned him up and gave him a benadryl like the vet said, and then took him to the vet at 10am. Dewey got his teeth cleaned, nails trimmed, eyes and ears cleaned and medicated, and his taffy shaved off his butt (he sat on a bag of Halloween candy and got a piece of taffy on his butt) now, he has clavamox for 2 weeks and eye drops for 2 weeks and Ear Drops for a bit. He's exhausted. He didn't wanna eat so Julie said to buy his favorite food, Ceaser, so I did and I hand fed him and he ate half a tray and I have him some water by the dropper. He's not interested in the bowl now his teeth were done and he's congested so I gotta help him. That's OK. That's what love is. Now I'm gonna let him sleep the night away and hope he feels better in the am.

Some good articles on vestibular disease, which was Dewey's diagnosis on Sunday at VREC in Clark's Summit. It's common is old dogs and they normally heal within 4 days to 2 weeks. We are only on day 3 like my vet says....

Hey it's Pearl here....today is day 3 of Dewey being sick. Dewey was diagnosed with vestibular disease on Sunday. Pretty much, a bad case of vertigo. Dewey has been making some progress since Sunday. Sunday night he ate 1/4 can of wet food. Monday he ate a bit over 1/2 can of wet food between lunch and dinner and for breakfast he ate 4 small scrambled eggs with ham and cheese. Half was Riley's! Yesterday, he ate half a can of food for breakfast and half for lunch and dinner he has 3 scrambled eggs with chicken cut up. Now today, he's not really eating much, he goes out to potty and comes in shivering cold. He's walking better every day, and his eyes are no longer darting. He is still taking his meds between 2pm and 3pm every day. Today, I called the Vet in Carbondale, they said they got his blood work and stuff. They said today is only Wed and he may just feel nauseous and cold today because the weather. He rushed himself to get better so fast, he needs to sleep. They said to boil hamburger and give him rice with low sodium beef broth. That will put a little something in him. He don't need much, just a little every bit will suffice. If he still refuses till tomorrow morning, then I need to call and bring him in for a check. But he's still peeing alot which is good too. They said this reaction is not uncommon and he needs rest. Being his eyes just stopped darting yesterday, rest is normal. Please keep praying for Dewey, he needs all the love and prayers from all of you.
In the picture below, he's cuddled up in Julie's blankie and sleeping on a pile of soft warm blankets. Julie don't let anyone but Dewey has her blankie.

Our Story

This is our story.... Hi everyone, my name is Julie. I am 9 years old. I love animals. I dream to be a veterinarian one day, where I can help people take care of their pets no matter what. My mom and I made this page so I can share all about my adventure with Dewey. Dewey is a 7-year-old black pug. He has a tumor on his one leg and he is partially deaf. But that's ok. Did you know that most older dogs are put to sleep forever because everyone only wants puppies? ( please spay and neuter!) And because Dewey has problems, he may not have lived a long and happy life if he was in the shelterT? Instead, my mom found a nice woman who loved Dewey and wanted to give Dewey a forever home. On Fathers Day 2019, my mom and my mom's friend Sam took me to meet Dewey for the first time. I will also share other things about dogs here if my mom lets me. I will take a lot of pictures of me and Dewey! He is my best friend as a dog and we do lots of things together!
