Play is such an important part of a pup's day! It not only gives them physical and mental stimulation, but also helps strengthen your bond and build communication skills.

What are your pup's favorite ways to play?

While Khaleesi's favorite games are tug, catch, or play fighting like a bear, she's always a willing participant in whatever crazy scheme her human buddy invites her to join. Today she's a customer at a café enjoying a "pumpkin peanut butter puppachino with bacon sprinkles" 😂 (Don't worry, much to her dismay, it's an empty cup 😉)

Welcome to the Pacc, Baxter!!

Baxter is a 1.5yr old Goldedoodle who has joined the Canine Apprentice Program to help me practice and refine my training skills! Today was Baxter's first lesson, and he and his mom did an AWESOME job working on some great recall games! He'll learn in no time that coming to mom is WAY more fun than slipping out the door to explore the neighborhood!

I don't typically share the , but with the 2 girls being such a mess this was too funny not to share.

How do we USE our party tricks like the leg figure 8, shake, and high 5??? We use them as a diversion and a reward for stopping an unwanted behavior!

Barking out the window? I give her the signal to stop barking and come and then we practice party tricks! She gets rewarded for the tricks, forgets about the 'threat' outside, and learns that leaving the window = fun time! It's a win win!

Show us your pups best party tricks! Or outtakes because they're great too!

As long as the weather is good we're planning to come out to this!

Working on heel with the human apprentice today!

We learned yesterday that we have a LOT of work to do to improve Khaleesi's obedience skills when there are distractions. It was a great reminder that if they can't perform with distractions, they don't know it well enough. We'll be out around town working on her focus to be sure all of her skills are solid in a variety of situations!

Practicing "come" and off leash "heel". Not heard was 'come on!' just before the video started.

While 'come' may be the traditional command, I've been saying 'come on' to her since she was a pup.

I encourage each of you to really listen to what you use for everyday commands for your pup and make a note of what words your pup consistently responds to. They may listen better than you think!

When you bring a pup into your life, it's important to know what your goals are, so you know what kind of training you need to do.

My biggest goal is always that the pups are happy and healthy and fully trust and respect their families.

Lots of unwanted behaviors, from poor leash manners to fear or aggression, can keep your dog from getting the care they need to stay happy.

What goals do you have for the pups in your family?

Education is the key to success! This week I'm analyzing dog body language to practice some skills I'm learning and would love some virtual volunteers! Send me your pup videos with a short description of the context. I'd love to see the good, bad, or just plain goofy videos of your pup just living life!

"Life is not an obedience exercise." ~Turid Rugaas

I LOVE this. I may take a bit of an alternative approach to dog training than others. I don't believe that a dog should spend their whole lives being commanded and expected to submit to their owner's will. It's so important for us as their family, to learn to understand THEM and help them to understand us. Once that communication is there, we can live happily ever after with our furry family. ❤🐕🐾

Getting some fireworks desensitization training in! It's super important to take every opportunity to give your pups positive experiences with possible stressors throughout their life 🎆🎇🐕🐶🍪

What's your pup's favorite sunny day activity? Khaleesi is absolutely WILD about water and would romp in the kiddie pool all day if we'd let her!

Ever wish your pup could talk?? Well, with a lot of practice, patience, and encouragement they definitely can! Now that Khaleesi has mastered her "outside" button, we're working on adding "play" to her vocabulary!

Want to play a game??? Are you a dog breed expert or amateur?

Let's play "Guess The Breed"!

Every pup's personality is a little bit Nurture, a little bit Nature. Their breed(s) can impact how they react to the world around them. The more we know, the more we can use their biological programming to help them live happy, full lives!

Here's how to play!
1. Comment on this post with a pic of your pup with ONLY their name and age...no breed hints!
2. Reply to the pup pics with your breed guesses.
3. Later today, we'll have the pup parents reveal their dog's breed!

We'll share more about breed types throughout the week and hear some of your favorite loveable (or not so loveable) quirks about your pups in our Nature VS Nurture posts!
