Do little dogs suffer from Napoleon complex?
Why do small dogs have so many psychological problems?
Paul McGreevy from University of Sydney examined behavioral differences in dogs of different height, weight and off all things, the shape of the dogs heads. In the study, owners rated their dogs on various irritating, disruptive, or destructive behaviors. They found that various combinations of height, weight, and head shape were significantly related to negative behavioral traits and in nearly all cases,
THE SMALLER THE DOGS, THE MORE PROBLEMATIC BEHAVIORS reported by their owners.
Interestingly the study showed Chihuahuas and Dachshunds were the breeds most likely to attack people and Pit bulls ranked somewhere in the middle.
Take note small dog owners, your dog’s behavior isn’t a forgone conclusion. The team also theorized that bad behaviors may be more related to nurture or environment. Problems like biting, barking excessively, jumping, marking problem, eating their own p**p etc. may be more tolerated by their owners because a tiny dog showing these behaviors is a lot easier to deal with (and may even be perceived as cute) than a large dog.
Any bad behavior no matter big or small dogs can always be controlled by the owner if they know what type of behavior problem their dog is having and what’s the correct training method. The problem is most of the time the owner doesn’t realize how damaging can bad behavior caused to them and their dog due to the emotional attachment to their dog. They know there’s problem there but they tried to avoid it and end up either they accept it or they choose to let go the dog.
When your small dogs are having these issues, the only thing that can help them and you is a ‘proper training’, not punishment or scolding.
