Zeroing on the British cat's ears
When we identify a British short/long hair cat, we always zero in on how many chins they have and how they seem to always smile at us (even though, deep inside, they might be cursing us to death). But joking aside, another feature of the British that we need to focus on are its ears.
The ears, as described on the WCF website, are medium in size, broad at the base, with slightly rounded tips, and, they should be set wide apart.
Some of you might think that their ears are already apart. Why focus on that? Yes, they might be apart but how wide apart should they be? As you can see on the illustration below, the position of the ears should be wide apart as possible. If the ears are close to each other, they will look steep and your British cat might be mistaken for a new species of rabbit. This, in turn, will fail to meet the breeding standard for the British cat.
How can you measure your British cat's ears and see if they are apart enough from each other?
The ears are measured from the tip of the ears to the nose, in a 45° angle.
Now, you found out that your British cat doesn't meet the standard, what should you do?
Don't fret too much because we can fix this in several ways.
📌First, we should keep in mind that the British is a slow growing breed. They will not reach full maturity until the age of three. If your British is less than a year old, they are still growing and will eventually grow into their looks as they age.
📌Second, if the British comes from a lineage of big heads, then, he would inherit that trait as well. Once he grows, his head becomes bigger, and this would naturally push his ears wide apart.
📌Third, if your British really has steep ears and they are not wide apart, what you can do, is choose a partner with a nice, big head, and fix the next generation of kittens.
Now, whip out that measuring tape and see if your British cat's ears meets the WCF breeding standard.
We hope that you have learned something new today about your British cat. For more information, you can check out this link - http://www.wcf-online.de/WCF-EN/standard/shorthair/britisch-kurzhaar.html.
