I really love this smoll Megasoma elaphas elaphas. He's under 80mm. It's a little hard to tell from the photo just how small he is. But compared to a 100mm MEE he looks like a little baby.

We keep many Prosopocoilus stag beetles since they are really great stag beetles to raise. Most are beginner friendly and have a variety of striking colors and looks.

Prosopocoilus stags have a lifespan that ranges around 6-9 months. It's not terribly long, but not too short either. Their larva can be raised in kinshi and regular flake.

Before I covered how you can try to check your stag beetle larvae's s*x by checking their L3 head capsule size. (L3 is the 3rd instar in a larvae's life cycle, stag and rhino beetles have 3 instars, L1, L2, and L3).

Male rhino beetles can be distinguished by a tiny white dot. This dot will appear on the third lowest segment of the male larvae during the L2 stage and will dissappear after some time during the L3 stage.

Female rhino beetle larvae do not have any white dot.

Female (left) male (right)

But just like stag beetles, head capsule size can also be used to determine the s*x of rhino beetles.

Most beetles we have on our website have 3 stages, normally referred to as L1, L2, L3 (may also be referred to as Instar 1,2,3)

Each larvae has a Head Capsule, which unlike most of their body, is hard. So, to grow, they will shed their old head capsule, and a new, bigger head capsule will grow out. In the photo, you can see a photo of a larva at L2, and then again at L3. You can see that the head capsule has gotten bigger.

L1 comes right after a beetle larva hatches and lasts about 1-2 weeks.

L2 lasts around 1-2 months

L3 is by far the longest stage, and will be the larvae's final stage until pupation.

Beetles semi-frequently show up in media! Mainly Japanese media, of course.

I have 3 examples.

1. Pokemon! We have at least 3 beetle Pokemon, Pinser (stag beetle) Heracross (Japanese Rhino beetle) Mega Heracross (Hercules beetle) and Vikavolt (Stag beetle), Vikavolt is the coolest one in my opinion.

2. Beetle Kirby! This copy ability debuted in Kirby Triple Deluxe.

3. And of course I can't talk about beetle media without bringing up Mushiking! A childhood game of many beetle enthusiasts.

With beetles, you have plenty of options when it comes to picking a beginner species. Dorcus Titanus Castanicolor is one of those great beginner beetles.

They are very similar to the Palawan stag in their look but are smaller overall but can still get to a very respectable 90mm, with the average being around 60-70mm+. So they have a great look, but don't require as much space as the Palawan stag. Their natural habitat includes parts of Korea and China

They can be bred with just flake, and have a larvae period of around 1 year for males. They do well in flake, but thrive in Hiratake Kinshi.

As adult, they have a lifespan of about 1-3 years. They are more docile than other titanus stags, but can still deliver quite a bite if you get on their bad side.

Overall, Dorcus Titanus Castanicolor is a very solid pick, beginner level rearing, larvae period of up to a year, a great lifespan, a cool look, and a respectable size. Highly recommended!

Sometimes, I get asked what the horns and mandibles are for. They are for combat! These beetles are extremely territorial and use their horns/mandables to challenge each other for space, mates, food, etc. That's why most species need to be kept separately, because if they are kept together without enough space and food, they will fight over and over again until one dies from injury or exhaustion.

For the most part, beetle fights are non-lethal. This is because of their hard outer armor, and their horns/mandibles are very fit for grabbing, so it's more like a wrestling match where they try to toss their opponent off whatever they are on, or until their opponent loses fighting spirit and flees.

Beetle fights are very fascinating, and one of the reasons why they are so cool and popular in Japan.

Hope you learned a little something today.

As you know, winter is coming.

With the colder weather, you may notice that some of your beetles will move less and eat less. And some species like Dorcus hopei may even go into hibernation. This is perfectly fine and normal. But try to keep your beetles above 65°F.

Also, a reminder to check our Terms of Service. We offer Live Arrival Garentee (LAG) for temperatures within 45°-85° F. We will check the temperature and do our best to have your beetles shipped out safely.

If your beetles or larvae arrive in fatal condition, make sure you contact us within 3 hours of arrival.

Again, please familiarize yourself with our TOS so you may be ready when making a purchase. Thank you!

Breeding tip of the Day!

When breeding beetles, it is recommended to tie the mandibles or horns of certain beetles. Mainly aggressive stag beetles and Chalcosoma rhino beetles.

Some beetles are very aggressive, and the male may attack and kill the females. Of course, one way to keep this from happening is to only keep them together when you can monitor the breeding process.

Otherwise, you should tie up the mandible like the photos shown to keep the female safe. You will need a zip tie and a straw. Cut a piece of the straw about the length of the resting position of the mandibles. Put the zip tie through the piece of straw you just cut, then place it around the middle of the beetles' mandibles, loop it through the straw around the other mandibles, and lock up the zip tie, cut the leftover zip tipe.

The beetle will still be able to eat and mate of done right, but no longer clamp its mandibles.
f.beetles made a great guide on his YouTube channel about this. You can find it in his playlist about beetle guides.

Now, this won't need to be done for all beetles.
But recommended for
Dorcus Titanus species
Giraffe stag beetle
Rheatulus crenatus crenatus
Rheatulus crenatus ruburifemoratus
Hexarthrius mandibularis
Odontolabis Burmeisteri

These are more likely to be aggressive towards females.
