Beetle care tip of the day!

1. When choosing a container for your beetle, make sure you get a sturdy one made of either hard plastic or glass, with a tight fitting lid. Beetles are very strong and may find a way to push their way or bite their way out of certain bug boxes.

2. Avoid using mesh to keep your beetle inside, even metal mesh. Your beetles can bite through it or get stuck trying. Mesh should only be used to cover small holes to keep out pests like fruit flies and ants.

3. And expect your beetle to reach places you don't expect them to. They may surprise you with how capable they can be.

Hope this helps!

Our Coconut Fiber listing has been updated. It now may also include Coconut Husk. Coconut Husk comes with chunky pieces, which helps smaller beetles cling on to and flip themselves back up easier.

It does not retain mositure as well as coco fiber does, but this can also help keep it clean, since lots of moister may attract other unwanted pests and would require more changes for the bedding.

Here are some of my top picks when it comes to watching beetle video content.
f.beetles:
Entertaining and helpful videos about beetle breeding. A great watch for new hobbiests and veterans alike. Also comes with English subtitles in most his videos.

:
It's probably one of the only channels you can find making quality beetle content in English.

:
Posts a variety of videos showing off manu fascinating insects as well as animals, and of course lot's of beetles.

All in Japanese, but still quite enjoyable to watch, especially since he posts just about daily, and most of his videos are of digging up nee beetles.

Hope you will find some new beetle content to enjoy!

A new blog has been posted on Jamesbeetlefarm.com/blogs

Here is a preview

General Beetle Larva Care:

A beetle larva is your first step to raising your beetle. To ensure the health, strength, and overall quality of your beetle, it helps to understand the different stages of development and how to care for them through each stage. Beetle larva sheds skin or molts every instar, their head capsule becomes bigger every time they molt, it is important to note that L1 is the most fragile stage and at this stage, larva should not be bothered excessively.

Environment Preparation General Rule:

The container size your larvae will need depends on the species you are raising, how big they have grown adn can grow, and their s*x. but each container should have about 3-4 small holes to let in air. This allows the larvae to get oxygen, but still retains the moisture in the flake for over 3 months. It is important to not allow for too much ventilation. Generally, you want your flake soi to last at least 2 months for your larva to eat and at the same time provide enough horizontal space for your L3 larva to turn into pupa. horizontal space should always be at least bigger than your beetle’s length. For example, if a male rainbow stag beetle larva is projected to become 40-60mm as adult, it is important that the horizontal space of your container is at least 60mm, I do recommend horizontal space to be at least 1.5 times the beetle’s projected length to ensure safe pupation.

General Container Size Recommendations:

First-instar larvae (L1): 8oz-16oz

Second-instar larvae (L2): 16oz-32oz

Third-instar larvae (L3): 16oz -64oz+

We've been eagerly for this large Docus Schenklingi to emerge. He needs a day or more before he is safe to dig up. Can't wait to see how big he is. I'm hoping he's around 80mm

Schenklingi is so cool

Larva tip of the Day! Ways to identify the s*x of your Stag beetle larvae.

The main way we would do this is by comparing the size of the head capsule with other L3 larvae of the same species. You may notice that some larvae have larger heads than some, the larvae with larger heads are more likely to be males. So if you only have one larva, it may not be able to tell unless you are already familiar with the species and their head capsules.

(L3 is the 3rd instar in a larvae's life cycle, stag and rhino beetles have 3 instars, L1, L2, and L3).

You can really only use this trick when your larvae are in their L3 stage. Otherwise, the difference is not really noticeable. You can also check the size of the body. Late L3 males are typically bigger and heavier than females, but checking head capsules is a more accurate method. If you take a look at the photos, you can see that the male is still much smaller than the female. So size alone is not a good identifier

Some species, like the Giraffe stag beetle, have fairly obvious differences in female and male head capsule sizes. However, some species can be tricky to tell. So identifying the s*x of your larvae will be inconsistent. This is one reason why we no longer offer s*xed larvae on our site.

I know people used to look at the ends of the larvae for white spots, these where thought to be the ovaries of female stags. I believe this method is usually considered false or inaccurate now.

Hope you will look forward to part 2 where I'll share how you can identify the s*x of your rhino beetles. Hope you have learned something interesting!

Fun Beetle fact! Not only are there many different species of stags and rhinos out there. There are also many different subspecies as well!

You are probably familiar with some of the different types of Dorcus Titanus species, like Palawan, yasuokai, and castanicolor. However, there are much much more than that.

A subspecies will usually live in a different location. They will also have some very noticeable or subtle differences.

In the first photo, it shows off 13 species of Dynastes Hercules!

Each subspecies has a unique species name
The Hercules species most people are familiar with is Dynastes Hercules Hercules, but other popular Hercules beetles include:
Dynastes Hercules Lichyi
Dynastes Hercules Occidentalis

In the second photo, you can see several of the different Giraffe stag beetles that exist. Of course, the one we keep is Prosopocoilus giraffa keisukei, the largest and most popular. Other popular giraffa unclude:
Prosopocoilus Giraffa Daisukei

There are plenty more subspecies out there and I hope I have been able to show you a whole new world of beetles. Until next time.

Today I would like to talk about something special. Today, I will be talking about

Mushiking was an Arcade game cabinet that could be found in malls and arcade game centers. You could start playing by just inserting a few coins. The game would load, and then eject a card from the bottom face down. I could always feel my anticipation growing when the card came out. Then you flip it over and see what kind of card you got. For beetle cards, they had a power ranging from 100-200, with a power increase of 20 for a total of 6 different power levels. The higher the power level, the rarer the card. The Arcades were around from 2003-2008, with another reboot from around 2015-2019.

They also had skill cards you could teach your beetle, each beetle could learn up to 3 skills, Rock, Paper, and Scissors. Essentially, it was Rock, Paper, Scissors with beetles, so it was easy for anyone to sit down and play.

I know I already liked stag beetles before I started playing Mushiking, but it helped introduce a whole new world of beetles to me, so seeing a beetle in real life that I first learned about from Mushiking is always very exciting.

Earlier this year, I got my hands on Mushiking Super Collection, which is basically a DS version of the 2006 version of Mushiking. I've also got myself a card reader, and been collecting...too many cards for myself so that I may play the game to it's fullest since I never actually got to play it very often when it was around. I've got to say, it's been a lot more fun to play than I expected.

I'll share more about Mushiking in the future if this post does alright. I hope it does, because there is a lot more I'd like to say about it! If anyone remembers this game or would like to know more, please comment below!

Have a nice day!

This week's Beetle of the Week is... the Metallic Stag beetle! I wonder why 🫠😆

Common name: Metallic stag beetle
Scientific name: Cyclommatus metallifer finae, or CMF for short.
From: Banggai Islands, Indonesia

The Metallic stag beetle is our most recommended stag beetle species for beginners!

This is because it's very easy to raise, very pretty with a variety of nice colors, short larvae period, and can get fairly large.

Its temperment is on the more aggressive side, but they have a weak bite.

Pros:
Short larvae period: Males (4-7 months) Females (3-4 months)
Lifespan: Up to one year for larger males
Size: Can reach up to 100mm, but rare. Typically larger males will be 70-80mm.
Easy to breed
Fairly hardy species, and don't die too easily

Cons:
Bodies are thin and more fragile compared to other beetles.
Aggressive (if that's a con for you)

Tip: You can identify the colors of females by checking under their abdomen

Well, I think that is all for today! Hope you've learned something interesting!
