Bank holiday hot picks
As it’s the bank holiday, we’ve had a good look around the tropical fish room and picked out the specimens that deserve a mention. These are not necessarily new arrivals, just specimens or batches that make a cut above the rest.
It was a difficult choice what to not include but we’ve whittled it down to a top 11, here we go.
#11
GOLD TIGER BARB
Newly arrived this week and already coloured up like we’ve had them weeks. Looking this good within hours of them going in, these are certainly going to be stunning as they mature.
#10
GLASS CATFISH
These well established tightly shoaling catfish normal get missed by customers looking for something different in our shop. They are translucent with all the organs tightly packed up near the head. These will put on a great show, shoaling tightly underneath an overhanging wood or plant.
(Located in tank number 7 if you want to find them)
#9
ZEBRA SYNODONTIS
A hybrid catfish by our main supplier. These are suited to larger community fish. Although nocturnal by nature, they will venture out when the opportunity of food is present, showing off their superb markings in a dash for feeding!
#8
FIRE EMBER TETRAS
These little tetras are one of the smaller species, reaching a maximum size of around 2cm. What sets our batch apart from the rest is the colour. These are bred for vibrancy, outshining other ember tetras available in most shops. This batch is already nearly cherry red and a great size. This batch won’t hang around for long!
#7
PINK SALMON FLAME TETRA
This strain is a fairly recent strain available to the hobby. Pink salmons were not particularly popular a few years back when they first became available but the strain is getting better year on year. We’ve bought in a slightly bigger size than usually available and the colours are showing beautifully!
#6
BULGARIAN SEAL POINT ANGELS
Something we don’t very often get hold of. As we’ve now had these a few weeks, the colour and patterns have developed into a striking white fish with beautiful black fins.
LAST 2!!!
#5
RED TIGER OSCARS
Something for the more boisterous aquarium! These we think deserve a mention as the patterning is so vivid, almost resembling flowing lava. The photos simply don’t do justice to them!!
#4
RED CAP GUPPY
Yes we’ve included a guppy in the top 10, and we perfectly justify it! These red cap guppies are a real popular addition to the community aquarium due to the striking uniform pattern of a red nose and tail on a platinum white body. What sets us apart is we have the females to them, almost impossible to acquire in the trade in pure form. The females are identically marked to the male and produce pure strain offspring. We are offering them at our usual guppy pick n mix price (£2.99 each or any 6 for £15.99).
Just for fun, go to google on your phone now and search “red cap guppy pairs” to see how much they sell for online!!!
#3
ALBINO CONGO TETRA
We’ve had these since they were about the size of a five pence piece and are just beginning to flush with the adult gold colouring. We bought these in small to keep the cost down as these are a relative expensive fish, especially when fully grown. We didn’t have many and we’ve grown them on to stunning sub-adults. These will look absolutely show stopping in a reasonably sized planted aquarium. If you are setting up a new planted set up, do not miss out on these!!!
#2
CORYDORAS JULII
These little scavengers are our most popular Cory, even exceeding sales of bronze and albino Corydoras together. These made it to our number 2 spot simply due to the exceptional size, vibrant colour and markings of the batch. These are near twice the size of previous batches and at the same great price.
#1
GOLD RAMS
As a batch of rams you are hard pushed to find better. This batch has been here for a few weeks now and they look so well established with a nice orange glow. These are a cichlid suited to a relatively smaller aquarium (ideally 80l+), they make a great centre piece show fish among smaller shoaling species.
It’s been fun putting this to 11 together, it wasn’t easy making choices with some reluctantly being missed off the list.
Big question is why did we do a top 11? The answers is that it’s one better than 10!
Have a great bank holiday weekend. See you soon. 🐠
