It's that time of year again!

Extending a BIG thank you to everyone who made donations to Home Sweet Hammy Home in 2024 via PayPal and Zelle as well as subscribing to Patreon and supporting by sending donations off of my Amazon and Chewy wish lists, very grateful for you all!

The benefit of supporting a 501(c)(3) established non-profit is all contributions are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law so this is the week I've designated to getting those tax receipts emailed out to everyone.

I've already started emailing statements to the Patreon subscribers today, so I'm on schedule this year as opposed to last year when I was over a week late, whoo- hoo!

Pictured in this collage are a few of the little ones currently living in the rescue. Benito, Twilight & Morning Glory are all available for adoption and Akari, Takoda, Zaria & Surprize are cherished Sanctuary Residents.

Thank you to the Anonymous San Diego Mice Benefactor who nominated us for the program Chewy Claus. I took a screenshot of portions of the email for you all.

We received quite an interesting package complete with an elephant guinea pig hide (I think it's for the piggies 😂), the tiniest felt hat, a package of colorful wooden chews, a Christmas tree ornament and the lovely card with cute inscription.

But what's just so awesome and sweet is the precious thought behind it all. Mice are not the kind of animals people go nuts over, they are more than often thought of as food for other animals instead of pets.

I'll never be able to express my gratitude to whoever is behind the San Diego Mice gifts. Lito, Zain and Akari are all doing so well despite them getting up there in age, they are a joy to care for. And I've gotten an update on Roshan who was adopted out a year ago and is also doing well.

Mice deserve the same opportunity other animals do to become cherished pets. I am very pleased to know someone else out there feels the same way I do and has shown us so much love 💜

No room for a 6 foot tree here with all the animals, their cages, and their supplies!

But......

The minute I saw these perfectly wrapped little gifts sent by the anonymous San Diego Mice Benefactor (posted a few days ago and will add to stories) I envisioned getting a tiny tree for our kitchen table and rewrapping the little gifts.

✔️ Done!

The tiny presents were so beautifully wrapped, my tape up job does not do them justice, but I'm planning on keeping them for all our future Christmases where there isn't room for a tree, because all of our past 4 Christmases were spent without seasonal decorations due to being so busy caring for the animals and lack of space.

And to the sweet San Diego Mice Benefactor, I truly hope you know how much everything you've done has blessed me, my husband, the GSP Rupert, and all the little animals!

Thank you 🎄

Benito is settled in and his little personality is emerging, he's quite fascinated with everything in his new cage! I've never had a hamster climb on top of their ceramic hide the way he does, little monkey 😂

Thank you for donating that cactus hide quite some time ago, this is the second hamster who is benefiting from it. In slide 2 you can see the home he lived in for approximately 24 days. Prior to that he lived in the pet store and prior to that we all know he came from a rodent mill. Typical life he's led so far, but we'll not let it dictate his future!

I'll be creating an adoption profile at some point this week for Benito. The fact that last year this time there were seven hamsters who looked exactly like him here who were never adopted isn't going to sway me. I'll give it my best at adopting him out despite the other seven remaining here the rest of their lives. Benito means blessed and whether he stays here or a new family gets approved, either way I'll make sure this little boy stays blessed!

Let's talk about coincidences!!!!

Yesterday I posted the new intake and realized some cage supplies were paid for with an E gift card that Debby .with.my.heart sent.

I had zero intentions on taking in any hamsters at the time I placed the order, but I wanted to have these cage accessories on hand in the case of a future emergency intake, which this kind of was.

The coincidence is, on the EXACT day this little hamster was being purchased by his owner at PetSmart along with the crappy cage and food (see receipt in slide 2) I received these appropriate items delivered to my door!

24 days later the owner contacts me explaining how she was caught sneaking a hamster into her dorm room and ordered to get rid of him. After we made arrangements to meet later that day I began creating a cage for him. His owner gave me the dated purchase receipt so I could document a guesstimate of his age for a future adopter.

And... nooowww this little one is thoroughly enjoying the cage that has the items which I purchased with the gift card that Debby graciously donated to my rescue!!!

Wow! I love how things just fell right into place for this intake 🩷

New hamster name has been decided. Benito means blessed in Spanish, thank you .an   for verifying for me and big thank you to all of the other Patreon subscribers for continuous support and the kind words regarding this situation!

I ALMOST made it to the end of the year without one single intake for 2024. But I'm blessed to be in a position to help this little one, so the name is very fitting.

NORMALLY those of us operating hamster rescues will conduct a rescue purely for the urgency to get the hamster out of an inappropriate small cage and into a bigger, more enriching one.

But in THIS particular rescue I wasn't even aware of what kind of cage the hamster would come in.

My intake is still closed however there wasn't another option for this hamster. A few days ago I was contacted by a college student who got caught sneaking him into her dorm room. She was ordered to get rid of the hamster and has a hearing next week.

I agreed to the intake because I appreciated her honesty and willingness to work with me. He was purchased on November 11th, and she provided a copy of the purchase receipt for me. You can see a picture of it in slide number two. She thought she had a Roborovski hamster, so I thought I would be taking in a little Robo. We were both deceived 🤪

Pet store employees get the hamster species wrong much of the time. And as always, they convinced her to buy this WAY TOO SMALL cage which the hamster has lived in until his intake here.

He now lives in the setup you see in this collage I made for you all.

I posted the story with more details in my rescue Patreon account, link in profile. $5 monthly unlocks all the behind the scenes of Home Sweet Hammy Home posts, is tax deductible in the US and all proceeds go towards supporting the operation of my rescue.

Update on Rupert's diagnosis of Valley Fever. The fungus is still present in his body but the good news is between the medication and supplements, pictured in this collage, his body is fighting it off!!!

Valley fever is a complicated disease and not all dogs are affected the same or have the same symptoms. Even after knowing about this from my years of working in the vet office, I'm still researching and trying to make sense of it all.

We are thinking Rupert inhaled the fungal spores when he was dumped in the desert back in 2023 and his immune system was probably weakened due to not having regular meals, clean water, vet care etc, so the disease was dormant until this past August. After he was admitted into my rescue and we determined no owner was going to come for him, I had him fully vaccinated and neutered, and we did a basic blood test that did not specifically check VF so I unknowingly adopted him out those few times and he was returned again without any of the adopters ever knowing he had Valley Fever!

I guess it's good I didn't adopt him out again, otherwise he would have began having seizures with his new family and they would have had to seek emergency treatment for him. Everything happens for a reason but Rupert being in my hamster rescue has been my greatest challenge to conquer and feeding, providing veterinarian care, medicine and supplements is probably my highest rescue expense to date!

We'll be testing Rupert again in February and hoping like crazy his body continues to make antibodies against the fungus. If anyone reading this would want to help with veterinarian bills or medication and supplement costs there is a link to Paypal in my profile and the support would be greatly appreciated. I very rarely ask for donations on my rescue social media. Instead do things like Patreon and affiliate links to help me with operational costs for my rescue, but these expenses for this dog who is a Magnet for Misfortune are adding up 😬

However heartbreaking some rehoming circumstances are... it's very important to consider all aspects.

I get these kinds of requests often and I know people mean well, truly I do, but they just don't understand.

Taking in animals means caring for them thoroughly prior to adopting them out. This takes time. It's not right to take them in and adopt them out in the condition they came in, which is usually not great. Rescues that adopt out unhealthy animals risk their own reputation.

I personally do not adopt out animals that came from these kinds of conditions without a veterinarian clearance. And veterinarians in my city will not clear an adoption if an animal is not adoptable.

Yes I know the picture looks like they are living in filth. I agree it's heartbreaking. But there's so much more to taking them in than people realize, I listed some of the thought processes I have in the collage.

Even if someone is offering to hold on to them temporarily, it's not doable in the long run. What usually happens is people mean well, they offer to get the animals out of the situation they are in under a rescue backing but without the ability to house for very long and with the expectation the rescue provide everything as well as the vet visits costs. Any one of these guinea pigs could have some serious health issues which might require treatment or surgery that would raise costs into the $1,000+ bracket, worst case scenario.

Many rescues will take them in and try to raise the money, but what happens if the money doesn't come in? Do the animals then not get the medical care they need?

This is why I have to say no to helping. At any time one of the animals currently in my care may need a vet visit and a costly treatment. My commitment is to them and my intake is closed, but if I could, I would. I know my boundaries and have had to force myself to stick within my limitations for the health and well-being of the animals I've already taken responsibility for.

I've received another lovely card and $20 cash from the anonymous San Diego mice sender, this time giving a shout out to my incredible husband for the amazing work he does on my bin cages. For anyone who doesn't know, he's perfected a method for the lid ventilation using grommets instead of zip ties, which one of these days we seriously need to get around to recording him create his masterpieces and sharing!

In this collage, you can see how he does the bincage lids and then I've also included an example of Lito's cage inside. When I was getting these pictures, Lito himself stuck his little head out from under his platform. You also might be able to spot some of the send hamster mail items that were donated.

I'm grateful for so much, my husband's excellent work, the anonymous San Diego mice card & cash sender, Send Hamster Mail donations and Lito who is the other pinky mouse sent on the horrible transport and a miracle survivor.

I have a unique referral ID code from Amazon who is offering a $50 gift card to anyone who refers people to them as well as up to $150 for new approval applicants!

So if you don't already have an Amazon credit card and you're interested, I would love to share my referral ID with you and if you are approved, you might get a gift card! We could all greatly benefit including each of the animals you see pictured in this collage, just one $50 gift card would feed them for a month. Another $50 gift card would feed the rest of the guinea pigs in the rescue for a month and I would probably have enough left to get them some hay based treats! Three $50 gift cards would feed all the rest of the hamsters and mice here in the rescue for the next month and I could get them some more bedding, and a fourth Amazon gift card would enable me to get a refill on supplements for Rupert Soooooo please DM if you are interested in applying for Amazon credit and I will share my unique referral code with you. The program allows for up to $500 in gift cards per year! I'd love to attempt getting close to that this year and then start over again next year!

21/10/2024

Some of these requests in the collages are from over a month ago but some are as recent as last night and this morning. I have perfectly healthy guinea pigs available for adoption here, however I've had zero adoptions in 2024 and get all these requests daily...

The plain truth is, there are not enough qualified families who are committed for the duration of their pets life.

I'm seeing this pattern take place over and over and it's quite disturbing. People reach out to adopt, I can't approve them for various good reasons, they turn around and get guinea pigs from local breeders or another family who is rehoming, but within months they've got them up on rehoming sites trying to rehome. Some of the people in this collage actually reached out to me less than a year ago to adopt and now are requesting to surrender!

I can't compete with breeders here in my city. People breeding guinea pigs haphazardly without any thought of how many are in shelters and rescues waiting for homes. They respond on rehoming sites when someone posts they are looking for babies in spite of the countless others who are trying to find someone to take their guinea pigs.

It's become insane. Truly heartbreaking.

And don't get me started on the number of people who have called begging me to take the guinea pigs they purchased from a breeder who won't take their animals back.

Normally pet stores are blamed, which IS bad enough, but I am getting bombarded by impulse pet store purchases AS WELL AS people who bought baby guinea pigs from a breeder and people who got guinea pigs from other people that couldn't take care of them, but they are now rehoming them. It's happening with hamsters too.

These poor animals being bounced around from home to home!

When is it going to end?
