Ken's yearling mustang Tag 7701 Our first try at gentling a yearling mustang

Now that the Teens and Oregon Mustang Challenge is over Little Joe and his buddy Misty got to spend some time in the pasture. They really tore it up when they first headed out!
Little Joe is pretty fast for such a little guy.

Awards were this morning. Little Joe and I took third place in Showmanship ( I never would have guessed it)! Eighth place overall. I'm really proud of Little Joe. He did great.

02/09/2023

Just finished showmanship. Little Joe did exceptional! Not bad seeing how neither one of us has ever done a showmanship class before.

02/09/2023

Finished the trail class. Little Joe rocked it! His handler messed up tho. I completely missed one element! DOH!
Video attached for your enjoyment.

Yesterday was the first part of the Teens and Oregon Mustang competition. Our division did body conditioning and handling first thing in the morning. Little Joe did great. Took three tries to get into a strange trailer but he got in! The body condition judge was fun to talk to. He said his little brother's name is Joseph and his name is Solomon. That's too funny.
Next is trail Saturday morning. I'll post a video soon

Little Joe spent the day at the Oregon Horse Center to do a couple classes in the Mountain Trail competition. Here is a video of the two and under class where he won 6th place even though he refused one of the obstacles.

Little Joe, Kim, and I spent the morning at the Yamhill County Fairgrounds at an obstacle course put on by the Yamhill Sheriff's Posse. Lots of fun and Little Joe did great

Little Joe spent some quality time at Cynthia Fisher's obstacle course. It was an excellent afternoon and the Fisher's were great hosts. Little Joe got a good at some really cute donkeys. He also got to see and wonder about a pair of emus.
Big thanks to the Fisher family!

Little Joe got to spend some time at the Santiam River this morning.

Little Joe went to his first ever horse show on Saturday. Everything started out great! He was nice and relaxed while waiting for our turn. He walked out like a pro and then.... let's just say we have some room for improvement. On the plus side he wasn't afraid of any of the obstacles and he did calm down by the time to trot the poles and he rocked the bridge! Then he walked out of the arena smooth too.

Pretty sure he isn't a fan of the speakers or the giant banners on the wall.

We will be doing this practice again in three weeks then for real in a month at this same location.

Little Joe and I (and 5 other participants) had the opportunity to work with Sam Van Fleet Monday afternoon in Sherwood. It was a great three hour and we picked up some really great tips. Thanks Sam for the instruction!
This was Little Joe's first trip away from our ranch and he did great! He jumped out of the trailer and took the new environment in stride. He went right to work and rocked the clinic.

Little Joe and Boomer, our old Quarterhorse, are playing at the fence. Boomer brought the tarp over to Little Joe and they played back and forth with it. Very interesting interaction. At the end Little Joe added his own twist on playing with the tarp.

We sent Little Joe's hair samples to Texas A&M for a genetics test. They say Little Joe is Quarter horse, Hanoverian, and Holsteiner. Sounds like he might be a big boy.

Little Joe continues to amaze me. Pulled out an umbrella and Little Joe just thought it was something to chew on... didn't phase him a bit.

Little Joe got a visit from the farrier today. He did SOOO good! The first hoof made him a little nervous when the nippers snapped on the hoof but recovered quickly. On the second he got a little weirded out by the rasp but calmed down quickly. On the back feet he was totally chill. So proud of this little guy! Honestly he did better than all of the rest of our domestic horses!

23/05/2023

Little Joe is telling he is not a fan of a ba****ck pad! I put it on him and he forgot how to lunge and he acted like the pad was gonna to kill him. Such a funny little guy.

21/05/2023

While I was watering down the arena Little Joe decided to start playing in the sprinkler. He is so funny.

So I was curious about how tall Little Joe will be when he grows up. I'm a pretty big guy and need a larger horse to ride. I've heard about the string method of predicting full grown height however that method isn't close for anything less than 18 months. Then I found this method: https://www.fei.org/stories/lifestyle/teach-me/how-big-will-your-foal-or-youngster-get

According to this method Little Joe will be 15.2hh!

Thought I'd share if any of you would like to try it. In about three more years I'll know if it is an accurate prediction method -grin-

Phoebe came over and gave Little Joe some scratches and a couple treats.

Yesterday Little Joe spent some time in the obstacle course. He proved to me once and for all that he is not afraid of any tarp. He is getting smoother going through obstacles.

02/05/2023

Today Little Joe had a little work and a little play. 180 degree away turns both ways then playing with big exercise ball.

Little Joe had a pretty big day today. Started out with deworming (he let us know that he is definitely not a fan of ivermectin!) and then spent time loading and unloading from the trailer. A couple times the unloading not quite as smooth as the video but we kept trying and ended on another nice, un-rushed load and unload.
The really cool part about this little guy is he was still willing to get back in the trailer even though he banged the wall and rushed out on a couple of the unloads. So trusting!

Little Joe practicing some ground work before it got hot today. He is getting better moving out and pretty good on hip yields. Even did a little backing up.
Off camera we went onto the sand arena and nosed around and got a couple good rolls in. He even felt a little spunky and sproinked a bit. Too bad I didn't catch that on camera cause it was really cute.

Little Joe's first trip out of the arena. He is big fan of fresh spring grass! He led out like a champ. He wasn't too sure of the John Deere baler and alerted a couple of times at the cars on the road. Once the rest of the horses started calling for him he was less interested in grass and more interested in getting back to his herd so we started wandering back. All in all a very successful first adventure outside!

We did some work today on picking up Little Joe's front feet. Started out with a rope and graduated to hands on.

Also as of last night Little Joe is officially mat free! I wasn't sure I would ever see the end of the mats!

Today Little Joe spent some time exploring the arena and checking out some obstacles. He is a pretty level headed little guy. Played on the tractor tire and tried to eat the pool noodles. Even worked on a little lunging
