Bring on the Winter Rewards!

After some good results last week we will be hoping to carry some of that form into Winton this Saturday, where we take four runners!

Race 3: 🐴 Glenkenick - Has really found some form over his last couple starts, another good draw and will be a real contender!

Race 5: 🐴 Magic Sign - After having some minor issues through his past couple races, he has seemingly really bounced back going off his work. Will take some serious steering from a terrible draw but definitely good enough if he can get in it!

Race 8: 🐴 Artmore - Proved herself last week with an all the way win, a step up in competition this week but with a fairly handy draw can definitely show some cheek with the right run!

🥇Artmore gets up! Using her handy draw she pushed forward and lead for an all the way win. What made it even more special for owner Lex Williams to have her winning at his own race meeting! Congrats to Lex and other connections(Hunter Boys Syndicate, D J Parker, B Burridge)

Westar Molly - Daimonds day didn’t pan out in her favour, but shes working well and drawn for an economical trip, watch for her running on late. (Driver: Hayden)

Congratulations to HAYDEN DOUGLAS who today won his first race in the sulky!

It has only taken him a handful of drives to pick up his first success which was aboard the Jeremy Douglas trained Magic Sign at the Invercargill Harness Racing meeting. It sure would of been special picking up the win for his Dad!

Well done Hayden, we look forward to seeing you in the winners circle again soon!

The Dexter Dunn episode is out now!

Dexter Dunn is one of the greatest Harness Drivers ever, period. His strike rate since he started out driving as a teenager speaks for itself. He was NZ's leading driver for 10 years straight, winning almost every big race there is to win in Australasia. He then moved over to America where he has quickly becoming the leading driver in America and the world winning over 50 Million in stakes!

In this episode you will hear an incredible insight into the life of a world leading reinsman. From
how hectic his schedule is having up to 8 meetings a week to handling the aftermath of a bad drive with online abuse all being a big part of it. You'll also hear the genuine love and care that he has for the horses with a pretty cool story about the horse Christen Me who is still with him today.

I really enjoyed this episode, although a completely different sport there are so many similarities between harness driving and almost every other sport. Dexters mindset and competitiveness are what helps him be so successful as well as some incredibly soft hands. As you will hear he is also just a massive lad, he loves a beer, loves his footy and can tell a yarn!

🏆 SOUTHLAND HARNESS AWARDS - CALLING FOR NOMINATIONS 🏆

The new-look new-styled Southland Harness Awards are being held on the evening of Saturday the 2nd of March 2024.

The organisers are now calling for nominations for the Southland Horse of the Year and for the Contribution to Harness Racing/Achievement of the Year awards.

The awards committee are working to make the evening more fast paced and enjoyable, so that as many people as possible can celebrate the achievements in Southland Harness Racing. To facilitate this they are re-jigging the format for the awards this year.

Everyone is encouraged to nominate, whether it be your own horse or another person’s, that you think is worth of inclusion. A selection of worthy nominations will be celebrated on the night - this is in place of the usual categories for c**t and filly of the year in each age group. So, if you’ve got a two or three year old that you think should receive some acknowledgement, please do nominate it.

The criteria for eligibility for Southland Horse of the Year is a horse must fulfill two of the following three criteria:

trained in Southland;
bred in Southland;
owned in Southland.

The organisers have also streamlined their other major award and have combined the Contribution to Harness Racing and Achievement of the Year awards.

For all nominations please include the name of the person or horse and a brief description of why you think they are worthy of either the Horse of the Year or the Contribution to Harness Racing/Achievement of the Year awards.

Nominations close on Wednesday the 31st of January.

FIRST RACE DAY RUNNER

Invercargill trainer Melissa Douglas hopes to have her first race day runner at the Oamaru meeting next Thursday.

She is happy with Shejengar's training but will make a final decision in the next few days on whether the mare lines up in a maiden race at Oamaru.

The alternative is to race Shejengar (4m Echoes Of Heaven-Light Majesty) at Wingatui on July 2.

Shejengar arrived south about six weeks ago after being with Te Awamutu horseman Alex Forbes.

All of Shejengar's eight starts have been on heavy tracks and amongst her results are a third, three fourths and a fifth.

Shejengar was third in a maiden 1200m at Waverley in October at her last start. In her only outing since, she was unplaced in an 850m trial at Te Awamutu in April 24.

Angelistic (maiden) is the only other horse in Douglas' team. Douglas works for Ascot Park trainer Sally McKay.
