Anyone who travels to Israel has seen it: Approximately 2 million feral cats are roaming around the country. In Jerusalem alone, estimates put the number at around 200,000.
Many live on the streets by the good graces of anyone who feeds them, but the majority of Israel's cats suffer and die on the streets from starvation, disease, hyperthermia (heat stroke) and even intentional abuse.
Street cats survive by hunting rodents which carry diseases, but mostly by scrounging for rotten food in dumpsters full of trash.
Animal rescuers and fosters in Israel are overwhelmed, desperate, and financially bankrupt trying to deal with the burden of finding homes for all the abandoned kittens and sick, neglected, abused cats they come in contact with each and every day.
Currently there are animal welfare organizations who are stretched to capacity and doing their best to provide spay/neuter services. But clearly the problem is out of hand and a massive support campaign is needed to finally address this issue once and for all.
That’s where we come in!! Hindy Pearson and Haya Sakadjian have united by their love of cats and heartbreak over what they have witnessed on their travels to Israel. They have founded animalrescueisrael.org to address and put an end to the suffering of Israel's street cats in the only humane and effective way possible: TNR which stands for Trap Neuter Return.
Sterilized cats are trapped, fixed, and returned to their environment to live out their days. Caregivers provide food and water and monitor for illness. This puts an end to breeding more litters of unloved, unwanted kittens roaming around the streets in disease and misery.
Animalrescueisrael.org is on a mission to fund a massive spay & neuter campaign, including a program of visiting veterinarians who will perform the procedures when more staff is needed.
We are so excited about this project, and will keep you all updated about our progress.
