This. Exactly this. I don’t care WHAT reason you have for having an intact pet running around. If it’s because your mom/dad/grandma/grandpa/fifth-cousin-thrice-removed didn’t neuter/spay and their pet was “fine”, if it’s because you have testicles and therefore can’t bear to make your animal part with theirs, or if it is because you just HAVE to have the chance to get “just one baby” from your favorite, best, most impressive animal ever to walk the earth pet…… almost 700,000 dogs and cats were euthanized in 2023. Shelter and rescue populations have increased by 900,000 since January 2021. And this does not account for animals that die abandoned, are shot, and meet their deaths in other manners not tallied by the organizations required to report these activities. Out of those 1.6M animals I am betting another wonderful companion of equal everything could be found. Maybe even better. Or different. But every bit as loyal and loving and worthy. NEUTER AND SPAY your dogs and cats. STOP BREEDING your horses. Our refuge alone in a very rural state has taken in and placed several hundred dogs. Dozens of horses. Do better. Be better. The people trying to keep their finger in the hole of the dam of homeless pets and horses created by irresponsible pet ownership and indiscriminate breeding are exhausted. They are broke. They have sobbed a million tears. They have held your neglected Animals in their arms so they experienced the love you withheld in their final moments. The animals are dead. More die every single day. Make - better - choices. Sterilize your animals.

Sometimes rescue work beats you down. You lose track of the tears and you wonder how many times your heart can break. We had to say goodbye to two of our most beloved geldings today. Earl and Pete came here together - part of the very first horses to form Banner’s Refuge. Today, they left together. When their bodies collapsed to the ground I swear the earth cracked or maybe it was my heart shattering. I am not sure. Their tails remain here as a permanent part of the miracles which have touched our lives as do all the tails of our beloved horses. But pieces of our broken hearts left with them forever. Run without pain, beautiful boys. Race across those rainbows in bodies that are not broken by human neglect and look back on us and the herd when you have a moment.

There are a lot of posts and poems out there about the animals we take into hospice and how their owners failed them and they are not without merit. Every living being should get to leave this world in the company of those they love best and who loved them best. Sadly, it simply does not happen 💔. Humans frequently exhibit a callous disregard that leaves me without enough words to address.

I want to say, though, for every special and amazing being that we bring here to love and live out their time in our care they are LOVED. They are seen, cared for, and when it is time to say goodbye the love is reflected in the tears shed and the heavy hearts among all of us.

Today we said goodbye to Quervo. How we loved this grumpy old man. He loved being petted but he kept his ears flat the whole time. Then came back for more 😂. He was a big bluffer. He has had seizure activity ever since he arrived but over time it has increased in frequency and duration. Today after over an hour of nonstop activity we had to make the decision to help him cross to a place where physical pain and frailty does not exist. We will miss him in those big moments of emptiness that signify someone special has left. His daily walks in and out of the barn to his outside run, his sassy old man looks, how he walked ever so slowly WITHOUT a halter each evening and just my hand on his back or someone else by his side to his stall so we could keep up with him. So many things about him that are now gone.

God speed, Quervo. We know Mariah and Tater Tot greeted you in a pasture where dreams come true.

Update! Blue was returned today. Her adopter felt it was not working out with his three other dogs and the commitment of taking care of all those unique needs. That’s ok! When these things happen there is a reason. We know her forever person is out there!

It had been a busy few weeks with spring! Blue went to her new home last night. We are so happy for her!!!

Zeus had a home a handful of months ago and through no fault of his, he had to be returned. But tonight!!! Well, tonight Zeus left with the most thoughtful couple who can’t wait to incorporate Zeus into their lives. Zeus has long been a refuge favorite and there were some big smiles on all our faces. Happy forever day, zeus !!!

This weekend we fostered out two horses (Noelle and Hero) to a wonderful location. And we rehomed 4 dogs. 6 lives changing for the better as we work toward forever outcomes. Rescue work is exhausting and it can quickly become overwhelming because the need is so great. We are working at finding perfect placements for our citizens right now as we simply cannot take in or help others when we are at capacity.

Bobby the Doberman waited NINE MONTHS for his forever angel. And Izzie much less time but for a 7 month baby it felt like forever!

Let a rescue……. Rescue you!

Sunday blessings from the barn queens. Wind here is gusting at about 60 mph. Temp is 27 but “feels like” 0 because of the wind. Snow on the ground, roads closed because of wind. Or snow. Or a crash. These girls are grateful for a good barn that has heated rooms, hay stacks to play in, and lots of food and water. Spring in the high country! We do not always get on here to make posts. We have so many things that keep us busy every day but I wanted to share an update on a special boy named Blue.

Blue was adopted but then returned the next morning. We were heartbroken for Blue but thankful he came back to safety. His new owner had a major life shift in just 24 hours. No fault of Blue.

This weekend Blue was picked for his new home. He has been waiting 7 months. Seven long months of hoping someone would notice his absolute beautiful spirit. His new mama sent this photo of him sunbathing today. She told us when they left, “He will never be back except to visit.” And I believe her. Little Boy Blue is finally home.

Let a rescue….. rescue you.

This summer has been insane! No time to breathe. But I wanted to share this picture. This is one of our horses purchased from the kill pen who is today serving as a marshal at Cheyenne frontier days parade. This is a huge honor. We are so excited and tip our hat to the incredible skills of Russ Hay, who you see mounted on this fine gentleman and who gave him this opportunity to shine! This is the second year and second horse he has rehabilitated from the refuge and used in this manner. In the terms of a woman I admire greatly, “Save a Horse, no matter where they are!”

Buck moon over Banner’s (super moon to the scientists)….
Hard to take a picture of such nighttime brilliances.
Definitely illuminated the path from the barn after finally calling it a day.

Home again, home again, jiggity jig….

Here is the why. Why we try so hard. Why we keep believing. Why we keep loving. Why we keep praying.

Champagne and Winston found their forever homes today. We will miss them - Winston has been the light of our days since he was born in a snow storm the end of April - but we rejoice their new family.

Check out their new digs. Belly deep in grass and surrounded by love. God’s wind beneath your wings, sweet babies. It was our honor to shelter you and love you until your forever arrived.

We said goodbye last night.

Mariah came to us from back East. The most beautiful paso fino you could dream up. She was instantly loved by any who met her. This isn’t the most perfect picture of her, but it is how she greeted me last night when I went to check on her again.

Mariah suffered from DSLD. She has had the best vet care possible, body care, farrier care, feed, and love. But the disease - as disease does - finally overtook the ability to overcome.

I don’t have more words right now. There will be a day to speak of her and her story. But today is not that time. She is being grieved by equine and human family members alike. Today and for many more todays we will honor her with our tears, our memories, and our prayers.

God speed, sweet mama. Pieces of our hearts and souls follow you to your next journey. We have been honored to love you.
