' “We owe it to our dogs to have a much larger conversation about spay and neuter,” said Missy Simpson, a veterinary epidemiologist with the Morris Animal Foundation, a charity that funds animal health research. “It’s nuanced, and there isn’t a great one-size-fits-all recommendation for every dog.”

Simpson was lead author of a paper on about 2,800 golden retrievers enrolled in a lifetime study, which found that those spayed or neutered were more likely to be overweight or obese. The study also found that dogs fixed before they were 6 months old had much higher rates of orthopedic injuries, and that keeping dogs lean didn’t prevent those injuries.

Fixing dogs has been dogma for decades. Here’s why some pet owners are skipping it.

This is something everyone should see.

When you get your 8/10 week old puppies, please keep this image in mind. Their bones do not even touch yet. They plod around so cutely with big floppy paws and wobbly movement because their joints are entirely made up of muscle, tendons, ligaments with skin covering. Nothing is fitting tightly together or has a true socket yet.

When you run them excessively or don't restrict their exercise to stop them from overdoing it during this period you don't give them a chance to grow properly. Every big jump or excited bouncing run causes impacts between the bones. In reasonable amounts this is not problematic and is the normal wear and tear that every animal will engage in.

But when you're letting puppy jump up and down off the lounge or bed, take them for long walks/hikes, you are damaging that forming joint. When you let the puppy scramble on tile with no traction you are damaging the joint.

You only get the chance to grow them once. A well built body is something that comes from excellent breeding and a great upbringing-BOTH, not just one.

Once grown you will have the rest of their life to spend playing and engaging in higher impact exercise. So keep it calm while they're still little baby puppies and give the gift that can only be given once.

Can you help us recruit some very good doggos?

Our data scientists have been busy crunching numbers and analyzing data in order to determine if we are meeting key scientific targets. Do we have enough dogs in the Pack in all age groups? In all sizes? From all parts of the country?

The short answer is: We’re close but not quite there yet❗️

We are still recruiting dogs of all ages, all breeds, all sizes, all across the United States (one per household)... but we would especially love to meet more dogs in these areas:
🐶 Puppies and young dogs, up to age 3
🐕 Large dogs, both purebred and mix breed
🐾 Dogs from certain geographic regions

Help spread the word! Have a friend in one of the purple areas on the map? Does your dog play with a big dog? Know someone with puppies?

Lovely Leo and his Lady Love (they purchased Leo with the intention of having puppies so their young son can experience the joy.)

Flufferbutt does not dictate what our puppy buyers can do with their puppies. Doodle breeds are unregistered, so telling someone they cannot breed their new dog is just smoke and mirrors; there is no way I would ever know if they did, and we'd love to see photos of the puppies and keep in touch with our owners this way. If this were a registered breed, we would feel differently as controlling litters and breedings is an ostensibly good way to ensure the long-term best standards for the breed.

Likewise, breeders that demand in the contract for you to spay or neuter your puppy, especially those that demand it is done by one year of age, should be ashamed of themselves. The premise behind 'you must spay or neuter to be a good citizen' is rooted in the idea that your dog will run around the countryside creating puppies wherever they go. This is just laughable. No one that pays this much for a puppy lets it run loose; likewise, we vet our puppy owners, they are responsible people.

We now know that your puppy will be healthiest if you wait until they are two years of age before a spay or neuter. And yes, that's a hassle if you have a female you do not intend to breed, but this delay allows her hormones to gain equilibrium, her plates to fully form, and other aspects of maturation to complete their process. THAT'S the responsible thing to do as a dog owner.

Running through the water, playing in the mud, these are some happy puppies! You can see that the mother dog, Olivia, is looking amazing so soon after whelping, largely due to the low-toxin, good food practices we follow. Most breeders won't let you see the mother after whelping, they look so bad. Olivia looked great after about six weeks.

Olivia is due for her first big grooming since before babies were born this weekend, I can't wait to see how gorgeous she'll be then. She has the tighter curly coat, more poodle-like than Nico, the father of these puppies. Her gait has an elegant, more graceful poodle-like stride, too. Nico's is bouncy and entertaining to watch. Olivia is super smart, which we can already see has been passed along to the puppies. 😍

Only two left...one male, one female. These are our two quietest puppies, both more low-key than the others, so are going to be easier than your typical wild, rowdy puppy. The cream and tan female loves to play fetch. The male loves to play tug, and they both love to cuddle. They are more affordable today. Act quickly, we're seeing a lot of interest in them.

Another very special puppy goes to her forever home with a wonderful family; she's going to have a great life 'down on the farm.' We can't decide what is cuter - the puppy or the smile on this little boy's face. 💗

Tug is always a good game, even when Dad joins in. He's never rough with the puppies, even though it might look like he is. They adore him.

Fun times at Flufferbutt

06/11/2021

How we spend our evenings now...too cold for puppies (and humans!) to spend much time in the screened porch, so the living room is now puppy playland. They are allowed bully bone time at the end of each evening, it calms them to get that chewing drive worked out. They do not get bully bones without supervision, there is always the potential for choking. The best price we've found for bully bones is the bulk package at Costco; they do sell out, so we buy several packages at once.

These little furballs are so good, in about ten hours of time spent in the living room, we've only had two accidents! Amazing.

"All puppies have parasites" is what your veterinarian will tell you, but the truth is, no, they don't. Our puppies have NEVER been treated for parasites, and every single puppy has been cleared of all parasites during the vet check. Every single puppy has NO PARASITES. This is due to two things - not having dozens of dogs kept in crates 24/7, where the density of dogs virtually guarantees that diseases are easily spread, and the herbal supplement we use to keep fleas and ticks at bay, which also works as a very effective anti-parasitic, InnerArmor. We're also proud to say that every single puppy has been declared perfect at their vet checks.

Another puppy finds an incredible forever home! Phil, Marsha and their two beloved dogs are going to have a grand adventure raising up Timmy. He could not be a sweeter dog and really needed a home where there were no children or big dogs to deal with (he's so tiny!) Our hearts are full seeing this special puppy go to such special people.

And so it begins; puppies going to their forever homes. Ian, Kenny and Mom and Dad, along with Golden Retriever Skye welcome Cool Jack to their home. We are so happy to see this special puppy go to such wonderful people (and even better, they live right next door, so we can have play dates!)

27/10/2021

Playtime; yes, they can get rough with each other, but it helps them learn bite constraints. Puppies who leave their littermates too soon often struggle to learn that biting too hard isn't good. These puppies teach each other every time one of them gets bitten too hard and either yelps or bites back hard. Learning to be great dogs is a process. Note the coats coming in and those gorgeous tails they got to keep.

I've got maybe two weeks before I won't wake up to this each morning anymore. 😭 It's going to break our hearts to see them go. Thankfully, they're going to wonderful families who will love them like we do. 💞

Lilly was born with a crink in her tail, a result of having ten puppies in one small dog's womb. It turned out to be a plus, though, since it looks like she's flying a flag!

19/10/2021

The jungle gym is getting much more attention as the puppies get old enough to interact with it. It's fascinating to watch them explore it. We're now spending about six hours each day interacting with the puppies, holding them and playing with them to prepare them for the next phase of their journey.

Willow and Leo winding down after a play session. Almost nap time, ahh. I love seeing those coats coming in so fluffy.

19/10/2021

Is it just me or does Leo look like he's expecting someone to steal his toy? (Note the gorgeous tails waving behind these puppies. Dogs use their tails to communicate. The US is the only 'developed' nation that still docks tails and even here, most younger vets will not do it. Docking tails is an antiquated practice that was founded not on safety, as is the story we've been told, but because someone thought it 'looked better'! Docking is considered mutilation in Canada and much of Europe, some places fine $5000 per occurrence to people who do it. We chose to let our puppies stay whole and healthy.) Watch these tails share their story on our videos, you'll see them wag, wave and curl over puppies backs in the most charming fashion.

See the puppy using the litter box in the background? These puppies are almost entirely potty trained already!

Nap time! These puppies get AT LEAST four hours of human time every day. This is one of the big differences (there are many) between a family breeder and a broker/puppy mill/'professional' breeder. The minute they get up each day they call out to us, they live in our home, and are so excited to see us, they ignore the food we bring, instead seeking contact with us. We greet each and every one, all ten, with petting, holding, eye contact, happy voices and fun. Every day, four times or more each day, for at least an hour, often ninety minutes at a time.
