Today, Iām reflecting on my journey as a mother, balancing work, life, and everything in between. I became a mother 11 years ago to my son, and 8 years ago to my daughter. Each day, Iām reminded of how much Iāve learned and how far Iāve come.
Yesterday was World Book Day, and as usual, my daughter Henrietta couldnāt decide what to wear. My advice was simple: wear what makes you feel good. Whether itās dressing up as Captain Underpants or going in your knickers and a cape, itās about comfort and confidence. In the end, she chose an outfit that made her laughāDeath or Ice Cream. She was a bit nervous at first, thinking it might not be appropriate for school, but I reassured her that it was totally fine and that it was a book we got from an author who visited her school. She wore it with pride.
Fast forward 24 hours, and Iām preparing for a networking event. I had warned Henrietta weād need to start our dog walk early, but she wasnāt thrilled. However, when it came time to help me choose my outfit, she lit up. We danced around the house in our pajamas, laughing and reminding each other to love our bodies just as they are, flaws and all. It was a beautiful moment of self-acceptance.
During our walk, she asked me if I enjoy my jobs and what I used to do. Explaining my career to her is always a challengeāIāve worn many hats over the years, from event manager, fitness training, dog boarding and most recently support a friend with his own business. My career path hasnāt been traditional, and Iāve never stuck to one company. But Iāve learned that thereās no one-size-fits-all answer to what makes a fulfilling life or career. I told her: You donāt need to decide your future at any age. Do what makes you happy, and take each day as it comes.
I didnāt follow the typical pathāI left university nine months in, switched careers, and took risks. Some things worked out, others didnāt, but Iāve embraced the twists and turns. And thatās the message I want to pass on to her: itās about embracing life, enjoying the ride, and knowing that even when the road is winding, youāre still heading in the right direction.
As we celebrate International Womenās Day today, I think about the womenāmothers, daughters, colleagues, and friendsāwhoāve shaped my journey. Every woman I know is doing her best, juggling careers, family, and everything life throws at us. Some are content with the paths theyāve chosen, others are still figuring it out. But we are all striving to be the best versions of ourselves, and thatās what makes us strong.
As mothers, we have the power to encourage our children every single day to be the best version of themselvesāwhether they are sons or daughters. Itās important that they know their worth isnāt defined by their job titles or achievements. Letās teach them to embrace their uniqueness and follow their passions, no matter where the journey takes them.
And to everyone reading this: Whether youāre a woman, a man, or anywhere in between, remember that different perspectives matter. Weāre all on this journey together, doing our best to navigate life. Letās celebrate each otherās efforts, break barriers, and inspire the next generation to live fearlessly.
Hereās to embracing every twist and turn, and to making every moment count. šŖ
