Good morning Shoshin Farm Fam! We lost a lot of productivity yesterday because THIS FOOL ran outside. None of our cats are outdoor cats, but Ruthie keeps forgetting that and has slipped out once a week for the last three weeks. She might look like an angel in this photo, but she's an evil bonehead. We even got a belled collar so we could hear if she's near the door. Wish us luck that we'll be able to work the rest of the weekend without her shenanigans.

Good evening Shoshin Farm Fam! In addition to being roomy and functional, the new Poultry Mansion should also be pretty. Self-adhesive wallpaper and vinyl flooring will make cleaning easier AND add lots of visual interest. To us, anyway! Shown with the wallpaper is the painted exterior.

Good exhausted afternoon, Shoshin Farm Fam. Today, we moved the old coop out of the way and tore down 4' of the existing coop to make room for the new one. Then we had to coax the extremely heavy platform onto the trailer (yay physics and math!), and get it to the back gate. Alas, it wouldn't fit through the gate, so Herb will disassemble it to a manageable point tomorrow.

Good afternoon Shoshin Farm Fam! Our existing chicken coop and run isn't quite big enough, so we decided we'd built a new one before winter and incorporate all the bells and whistles we wished our coop had. Construction began on Sunday. So far, the platform is nearly done and the coop walls are framed out.

MAY I HELP YOU?!?!
Pro tip: don't leave mealworms outside, even if they're bagged and boxed. Woke up from a dead sleep to hear these two chuckleheads right on our deck.

Holy masked bandit, Shoshin Farm Fam! This is twice in a month we've found a raccoon trying to roost with our chickens. The picture isn't much to look at, but everything is ok. In both instances, the raccoon was more than happy to run away without incident. The ladies are all fine. We're about to begin construction on a new coop and run, but even with the new digs, we're clearly going to have to secure everyone BEFORE dusk. Also, I feel Herb should allow us to get a livestock guardian dog. Or a guard goose.

Good morning Shoshin Farm Fam! Have you heard people say, "Leave the leaves!" or not to cut back your dormant garden? That's because many species of butterfly and insect overwinter in leaf litter or on dried up plant stalks. These are Eastern Swallowtail caterpillars and their chrysalises. While they're quite vibrant as a caterpillar, their chrysalis would be invisible among dead leaves or attached to a dried flower stalk. By not raking, mowing, or blowing leaves, you're allowing these native creatures a better chance of spreading their wings in the spring!

Good afternoon Shoshin Farm Fam! We're so excited to have finally found this year's Monarch Caterpillars. We found some Eastern Swallowtails the other week and two more today, but I was worried we wouldn't get to house any Monarchs. Since we've put them in the protective habitat, they've already abandoned the food source and climbed to the top of the enclosure to prepare for creating their chrysalis. We'll keep you posted? 🦋

Good morning Shoshin Farm Fam! We tried to grow potatoes for the first time. We've learned a couple of things and it was fun. It was time to get them out of the ground and here's how it looked.

Welcome to Shoshin Farm

Our backyard farm started in 2016 with five types of vegetables in three galvanized tubs. Today, over 20 vegetables and herbs are rotated annually in a 700ft2 raised bed plot that’s bordered by a native perennial pollinator garden and patrolled by friendly chickens. Shoshin Farm is a Certified Wildlife Habitat, a Monarch Waystation, and registered with both the Cincinnati Zoo’s Pollen Nation and the National Pollinator Garden Network.

In Zen Buddhism, word “shoshin” is the beginner’s mind, free of preconceptions. We felt this a fitting name for our microfarm as we embrace this philosophy in all aspects of our lives. Operating Shoshin Farm is a continuous cycle of learning, blundering, creating, and evolving.
