Meow - Meet Pumpkin. She's a friendly stray who was found by a couple Philly Student Advocats works closely with. She came to them late last night dragging her back legs and in significant pain. I advised them to go to an emergency room immediately and not wait until the morning if they were able. This couple feeds colonies around the hospital but actually lives outside of the city, so they took her to the closet hospital to where they live in Norristown.
Unfortunately, X-rays revealed a broken pelvic bone. Most likely she was hit by a car. These usually heal on their own, thankfully, and there was no neurologic damage from the injury. She received pain meds and some medicine for a corneal ulcer and is now in the care of Philly Student Advocats.
The emergency bill came to 500 dollars, if you are able to share or help.

Donations can be sent to Paypal: [email protected]

Please note - while these are my personal accounts, I have a separate account within these that is dedicated to Philly Student Advocats while we work on getting an account opened for the rescue.

On , we light candles to shine a light on all of the orphaned pets around the world who are currently waiting for a home or died dreaming of that opportunity. We honor the memory of the pets that didn't make it and vow to be part of the solution through TNR, fostering, and adopting. We need all of you so that we can make the difference - YOU are the difference between life and death for these animals.

URGENT FUNDRAISE ***

Meet Eli - he came to me from the streets with a nasty infection, emaciated, wounds all over, un-neutered, no teeth, and FIV +. Apparently he was someone's cat and they just kicked him to the streets

He's in pretty bad shape and will need an urgent tooth extraction to clear the infection in his mouth/around his orbit. I'm waiting for some final bloodwork to see if he's safe for anesthesia. He was recommended to be euthanized because of his poor condition and how much medical needs he would require, but obviously I couldn't do that so here we are!

He truly has no idea how bad he looks from the outside and is just an absolute doll. He's grooming himself, eating, and LOVES belly rubs. We need to give him a chance, but we can't do it without help.

If you can donate or share this, Eli will be so grateful so he can eat pain free :)

Hi!
Tomorrow is a big TNR event; we are hoping to have ~15 cats trapped for the event. This girl is one of the kitties. I picked her up tonight from a colony near the medical school. She’s very sweet and needs a little bit of socialization - then she will be up for adoption!

Can anyone foster her for a little while until she’s adopted?

21/08/2020

Hi all!

We've been quite busy so sorry for the lack in updates!

1. We had our first official adoption to a fellow medical student! Which was super exciting. We adopted out Miso, a friendly girl who just wanted love and was, unfortunately, being abused by someone in Kensington. Our partner in Kensington fortunately was able to take her in. Of course, this mischievous girl decided to open her spay incision 1 day after being adopted, so we had to rush her to the emergency room because part of her intestine was actually coming out. She's doing well now and is recovering at her new mommy's house on antibiotics and a new e-collar. That cost us a pretty penny but anything for Miso girl!

2. We pulled a mom cat and her two kittens from a North Philly neighborhood. Apparently this was her fifth to sixth litter of kittens. Mom is now at Green Street Rescue and will be spayed today. She's very sweet and will be up for adoption soon! Her babies will too.

3. Our momma and her six kittens are doing well. 2 of the kittens are in foster right now. The other 4 and mom will be going to new foster on Saturday. Mom tested positive for FIV. This isn’t a big deal, and she will live a normal life, but there is still some stigma about it so might make it more difficult. This does not necessarily mean the kittens will have it either but does mean we have to wait to test.

I'll attach some pictures! Thank you all and please help to spread the word on our brand new rescue!

Some updates! Seriously we could not have done all of this without everyone's love, support, and generosity. So thankful.

1. Kenny (our little baby with the bad eyes) is going to foster this weekend. He will most likely need surgery when he is a little bit older to have his left eye and possibly his right eye removed. We are currently treating him with an aggressive regimen to see if we can salvage the right eye.

2. Our momma cat - Kamala - had her babies yesterday. Unfortunately, only 2/6 survived. They are doing okay and nursing. The other deceased kittens were very underdeveloped and had multiple anomalies, most likely from poor nutrition from momma since she was living on the street. See picture of momma and babies. They are currently at Green Street Rescue.

3. We have a new mother with SIX kittens that we took in today. Like 5 minutes ago. I don't have many updates right now about them but will update in a few days about their status.

Hello, everyone. We have a deep and sincere commitment to helping the North Philadelphia community in the zip codes closest to Temple Medical School. Right now, we are taking a break from trapping and fostering to get a website, collect supplies, and begin fundraising, as well as explore possibilities as a non-profit to maximize our ability to help the cats and pet owners in our community. While our passion and love have been strong, we have been operating on no budget and with just the efforts of a couple people, and we realize that model is not sustainable. In the coming months, we are going to work on building a volunteer coalition, collecting funds and supplies, and building a model that can make the most impact. Thank you for your patience and support while we reevaluate our organization.

20/02/2020

We need a foster commitment by tonight (Thursday) for momma and her two kittens from Broad and Allegheny.

17/02/2020

A few members of Temple Med Katz had an impromptu trapping adventure today. We trapped two orange tabbies (one of whom had an eye injury), met caretakers at two locations, and found a momma with two ~4 week old tiny kittens. We will be going back to get momma and her kittens (momma was so sweet, but her kittens were super skittish and couldn't be trapped).

Small steps towards a better life for the kitties in North Philadelphia! Help us continue to TNR by donating!

Holley Fok

Matt, Temple Med Katz's first official rescued kitty!

Congratulations to our first official Temple Med Cat, Matt! Matt was seen hanging out in the Medical School courtyard. After multiple attempts, Matt was finally spotted a second time and taken into temporary foster care. Matt had extensive matting in his long hair and was excessively drooling. However, Matt was as happy as can be in his temporary foster home; he was a purr machine and adored being pet. When he was taken to for his neuter, vaccination, and flea treatment appointment at Forgotten Cats, the staff fell in love with him and decided to keep him under their organization for adoption. We are so happy for Matt!

About Us

Temple Med Katz has been a long time in the making. The area of North Philadelphia near Lewis Katz School of Medicine (aka Temple Medical School) has many community cats. In the past, separate individuals have been TNRing and rescuing kitties from this area on their own; through establishing this group, we are excited to begin a coordinated effort to TNR (trap, neuter, and release) the community cats in our area and rescue friendly kitties to find them loving homes. Additionally, we will focus on finding and providing resources to colony caretakers.

Temple Med Katz will also be affiliated with Temple Cats, which has a similar focus but on Temple’s Main Campus.
