The Best Pets For Apartments

While apartment living can often mean no pets or small pets only, there are actually a number of great options for apartment-friendly pets. To help you find your next apartment-friendly little buddy, Timbercreek brings you this list of perfect pets for apartment living.

LAP DOGS
Small dogs are well suited to apartments. Much more so than large dogs like Shepherds and Labs. Look for breeds like Pugs, Shih Tzus, Chihuahuas, Bichon Frises, or Boston/Yorkshire/West Highland Terriers. These breeds also tend to be hypoallergenic and/or non-shedding, which is great for small spaces.

CATS
Cats are really are great apartment pets. All they need is a litter box and food to thrive. They can take care of themselves, be left alone, don’t need much attention, and will find mice if you forget to feed them.

HAMSTERS + GUINEA PIGS
While technically a rodent, hamsters are the pet store poster child. A close relative, guinea pigs are non-rodential, but still similar in terms of size and needs. Both are great small-space pets. BUDGIES + PARAKEETS

FISH
There may be no pet with more gear and paraphernalia than fish. Tanks, stones, plants, structures, hides, cleaners, oxygenators, food, lights -- fish come with a lot of baggage. That being said, they’re perfect for apartments. Once set up, they only require feeding once to twice daily, and a tank clean maybe once a month.

RABBITS
Rabbits are often not top of mind for aspiring pet owners, but they're super cuddly and great for apartments. They’re cute, require little more than a guinea pig, and can be trained to use a litter box. Kinda cool, in addition to the fact that they’ll also train to walk on a leash.

HOW CAN I GET RID OF DOG BREATH?

Do you think your dog's bad breath is just what a dog's breath smells like? There's good news: Dog breath doesn't have to send you running away from your pet. Here are some steps you can take to freshen up the situation.

BRUSH YOUR DOG'S TEETH.
It might sound ridiculous but it will keep your dog's breath fresher while reducing plaque and tartar build-up, which can help prevent tooth decay and gum disease. Most pet stores stock special finger brushes that you slip over your finger to brush your dog's teeth. Special canine toothpastes in appetizing flavors help make the experience a little more enjoyable for your dog. Never brush your dog's teeth with a toothpaste developed for people.

CONSIDER ANNUAL CLEANINGS BY YOUR VET.
Bad breath is more common in older dogs because tartar builds up over the years—unless you have your dog's teeth cleaned regularly. Your vet will clean and polish your dog's teeth and check for any problems, such as cavities or tooth damage. Your veterinarian may also recommend cleaning under anesthetic to remove heavy tartar. This can be more expensive and risky for older animals, but it may be worth it to avoid a serious and possibly life-threatening illness later.

GIVE HIM SOMETHING TO CHEW ON.
Chewing is your dog's natural way of cleaning his teeth, and it improves his breath in the process. Consult your veterinarian about appropriate chew toys and oral care treats.
Keep an eye on what he eats and drinks. Make sure that your dog isn't eating inappropriate things, such as f***s from a cat, dog, or bird. And be sure to give your dog fresh, clean water daily
Add chopped parsley to his food. Parsley is a natural breath freshener.

DOES YOUR DOG EAT EVERY MEAL AS IF HE HASN’T BEEN FED IN DAYS?

Follow these 5 Steps to Slow Down a Dog That Eats Too Fast:

1. Make sure your dog is getting the right nutrition. If your dog isn’t getting enough food, or if his food isn’t providing the nutrients, calories, and protein he needs to feel satiated, he’ll be much more likely to scarf down meals. Talk to your veterinarian about your dog’s specific dietary needs and always use a measuring scoop or weight scale to ensure you’re feeding the right amount of food.

2. Feed smaller meals, more often. A dog that’s only fed one (and sometimes two) meals each day may be growing too hungry between feedings and scarfing down meals as a result.

3. Feed on a consistent, reliable schedule. Feed your dog at the same times every single day. Some dogs only need the security and consistency of regular mealtimes to learn that, even if they eat at a normal, safe pace, the meal in front of them will not be their last.

4. Be sure your dog feels confident and secure during meals. If your dog is an only fur-child, make sure his feeding dish is located in an area of the home where he feels safe enough to slow down and enjoy his meal. Avoid high traffic areas, areas where loud noises, flashing lights, or the presence of other family members might make him feel insecure.

5. Make scarfing down food impossible. If you’ve taken the steps above and your dog still tends to eat too quickly, you’ll need to make it physically impossible for your dog to gulp down her dinner.

Lots of dog moms and dads do. After all, his mouth is cleaner than yours, right?
Nope.

Think about it - what he eats, what he licks. Common sense tells you it’s a germfest.

But the truth is, those bacteria aren’t big health risks for most people. So kissing your furry baby is OK, if it doesn’t gross you out. Just have a healthy awareness of what could be in your dog’s mouth, says Clark Fobian, DVM, president of the American Veterinary Medical Association.

WHAT HAS YOUR DOG BEEN DOING?
Before you kiss a dog, or let a dog kiss your face, “you have to think of where their nose has been,” Fobian says. “Has it been inside a dead opossum on the side of the road, or the posterior of another dog, or in the litter box?”

Don’t think that kissing your dog on his snout or the top of his head is safer than on the mouth. When a dog has an infection -- say, in his ear -- germs can end up all over his body through scratching, Fobian says. And there’s a good chance whatever’s in his mouth will end up on his coat through slobber and licking.

COULD YOU MAKE EACH OTHER SICK?
Human and dog mouths have “a large number and a wide variety of bacteria,” Fobian says. Fortunately, most of it doesn’t make us sick, but some can. Parasites like hookworm, roundworm, and giardia can be passed from dog to human through licking. Salmonella, too, can be passed from your dog to you, or vice versa.

Viruses tend to affect one species or the other; you’re not going to give your dog a cold, and he won’t be giving you his cough.

IF YOU’RE SICK, THINK TWICE
If you’re not healthy, skip it. People with weak immune systems should simply avoid kissing pets, Fobian says. That includes those with HIV/AIDS, those who have had an organ transplant, and those who are on medicines for cancer that limit the body’s ability to fight off infection.
