The squirrel is back for more seeds and this morning all four cats are locked in watching.

He is Lexi and Beastlings current version of Cat TV since he knocked their bird feeder down and broke it in half...

I had the pleasure of playing with Ian here at the PAWS Chicago Adoption Center a couple of days ago. He absolutely loves his tunnels and his wand toys! When combined he goes to his happy place!!

This is a quick review and overview of Catbox Cardboard Boxes for Cats.

This is just a short story about trying to do a good deed and realizing that not only are you not doing a good deed, but you're actually doing the exact opposite of what you planned to do!

The chilling cold from the Polar Vortex in Chicago this week encouraged me to try and help out a local stray cat. I had been seeing her around for months.

Sometimes she'd walk through. Sometimes I'd see her on our security camera. It was almost certain she was a stray given I live in a pretty downtown area of Chicago.

I was worried about her with the recent freezing temperatures plummeting below -40 when the wind was blowing.

I created a shelter, I put food out, I even checked it nightly to ensure everything was in good shape...

But my plan definitely didn't have the results I intended. I would say it was quite a surprise when I went to check on my stray buddy on Tuesday night...

This is a review of the K&H ThermoKitty Heated Cat Bed (https://amzn.to/2SD9DVB).

I got this bed because my cats absolutely love sleeping right on top of me or right next to me. It makes me incredibly hot then I can't sleep. I figured if I got something like this they'd head off and sleep in it instead! And I was right!

The ThermoKitty is a pressure activated heated bed. That basically means that it only turns on when there's actually a cat in the bed, it doesn't just run up your electrical bill staying warm all day. On top of this it'll minimize any chances of a short taking place or a fire taking place from the bed overheating while it isn't in use.

The bed heats to a temperature both Lexi and Beastling love. They sleep in it pretty much every day of the week, especially in the cold Chicago winters. But even in the warmer times of year they still love the extra warmth it provides. Note you can easily unplug the bed in the summer if you simply don't want it to run on.

The bed is huge if you buy the large size. I bought the large so both of them could sleep in it together. It is about 20 inches in diameter and 2 average domestic short/long hairs fit in it easily together. Lexi is about 13 pounds and Beast is about 9 pounds, plenty of room for them to double up.

On top of this the bed has a super comfy little pillow built right in and a large foam ring around the outside to create the lip, but the beautiful part is how easy it is to take it apart. You can easily unzip the pillow and pop the heating pad out of the bed in seconds. Then you can slip it over and easily pull the foam ring out through another zipper. This means hand or machine washing the exterior of the bed is done in a snap, a huge benefit for anyone with messy or furry cats (everyone with a cat?).

The only thing I don't love about the bed is the bottom is nylon, not non slip. Since I keep it on my nightstand I added a simple non slip rug mat to the bottom of it. This ensures that even if my cats get startled and jump out of the bed it doesn't fly off the side and send them tumbling.

With our 2 cats we give it a solid 8 paws and 2 tails up! An excellent product you should definitely consider.

This is a review of the Pioneer Pet SmartCat Ultimate Scratching Post (https://amzn.to/2SE9Fwq). The SmartCat post is a sisal based vertical scratching post that is excellent for cats of all sizes.

A few of the major items work noting on this cat scratching post:
-Size & Weight: The post has a huge base (16" x 16") and it is a full 32 inches tall, but it is also very weighty. This ensures your cat can get a full body stretch while also not risking tipping the post over.
-Good design: The post is large enough to accommodate most cats and it is also super easy to put together. On top of this the base has recessed screws so that even if the post moves or slides on a hard surface the screws won't scratch your floor at all.
-Sisal Fabric: The post is covered in sisal fabric, largely considered the go to choice for pretty much any scratching post. It is easy on your cat's paws, but it also does an amazing and satisfying job of helping them sheathe their nails.
-Durability: I've had mine for over three years now with multiple cats tearing and beating on it daily. This includes both my resident cats as well as numerous foster cats. So far it is still in great shape and looks like it will be for years to come.
-Price: Compared to other sisal scratchers of similar quality and size it comes in at a great price. Although the price fluctuates depending on where you buy it you'll still find it very competitive.

Unless you've got a cat that has a specific penchant for horizontal scratchers or cardboard I really think this is one of the best options available to any cat owner!

Here I'm unboxing the December Happy Cat KitNipBox (https://amzn.to/2Lm67fa). KitNipBox basically comes with 5 items or so per month and helps ensure you have a constant amount of variety available for your cat.

The subscription is a monthly recurring subscription and you can either get it as a one off or you can get it every month. There are also a couple of additional options like diet restrictions (to ensure you don't get treats) as well as multi cat boxes so you get more toys and treats.

This month I received the following in my box:
1. Playful Pet Mistletoe Door Hanger - Value $7.00 - Basically a simple door hanger that hangs on the frame of the door and a leaf shape hangs down with a catnip scent. 30 seconds after hanging it up Lexi was batting at it and chewing on it.
2. Safemade Kitten Mitten - Value $5.00 - A small sized toy shaped like a mitten that is stuffed with North American catnip and a squishy filling.
3. MAX Catnip Candy Cane - Value $5.00 - This candy cane is soft and is loaded with catnip to keep your kitty interested!
4. LEAP Snowflake Kicker - Value $5.00 - A traditional style kicker toy, filled with catnip and crinkle style paper to keep your kitty enticed.
5. Kittles Turkey and Cranberry Crunchy Treats - Value $4.00 - Some great crunchy treats that I'm sure Lexi and Beast will go for. Although they seem a bit behind the time delivering turkey and cranberry in December!

At a value of $19.99 the math works out in your favor as the expected value of this box is about $26.00.

The only concern I have with this is you can't find the toys in these boxes anywhere else so there's no way to know how much they actually cost and value the subscription.

All in all I've been happy with my subscription so far, but I have turned off the treats going forward because my cats simply cannot eat this many treats and not gain a ton of weight!
