I just had to post now about this amazing group of people i just had fir the river trail, 7 riders ranging from experienced to inexperienced. All 7 horses, storm, kallie, faf, zeus, totius, buddy and phantom were absolute sweethearts. Zeus helped his rider build some confidence after she had a bad experience with a horse, totius rider found his nos button, faf found his top gear, phantom also helped his rider build so much confidence that he even trotted, buddy just let lose when his rider asked, storm was just very sweet and as soon as his rider got his steering under control she to let lose, storm tried to go his own way instead of going with the flow🙈 then kallie also built up his riders confidence and she also trotted kallie. I rode my best boy stan and Naomi rode ceasar, all in all this was just such a fun group to ride with, hope to see you guys again😃❤ thank you all so much.

Form beach rides, camping, trail rides, making new friends, soon to be on tv, pub crawling and much much more in between. Phantom gave the famous Jan Braai a lift in to the boathouse pub and i got to talk about milkwood horse trails as well, can't wait to see that episode air some day. I've had a few groups come to ride, my latest was a family of 5, mom, dad and their 3 kiddies. Storm, zeus and stan were so sweet with the kids and lets not forget faf and totius who carried the parents, so sweet, the whole group's vibe was just so nice and so chilled. Maya came to ride few times as well, giving phantom some good workout sessions.

Now i can't remember if i introduced my new horse on here or my personal page, i recently got a very sweet and very interesting arabian gelding called Khalil, aka kallie. Also a very good trail horse.

The horses are at the moment so divided, I've got the main group in the upper fields by the mountain, I've got another group in the bush camp on my neighbor's property, then the 3 stallion babies at home and then the house horses are also out in the field, they were supposed to be in the riverine camp, but due to some incompetent people cleaning the fence between my neighbor and his neighbor, they also downed the fence and now the horses are on the river trail property, i don't mind it as that camp is not only massive, but it has some incredible grazing.

Speaking of the stallions, baby tex is doing well, he's a livery foal who came here with his mom to socialize and gain some weight, tex is fully weaned now and his mom has dried up and gained a lot of weight. Nimbus, my mystery coloured foal is becoming such a handsome young man, i can't wait to see how he actually turns out, colour wise, height wise and riding wise. Then lets not forget Naomi's beautiful friesian stallion Ragnar, aka raggie, he's growing like a w**d and gaining height, he's going to be an incredible match for inka one day, can't wait till he's old enough to ride, imagine me with inka and Naomi with raggie on the beach😍 Nimbus is almost 2 years old, I'm still trying to wait till hes 3 to castrate, but it's getting more and more risky having stallions around, they aren't active or be having like stallions yet, but it can all change soon, then it's snip snip almost immediately.

What a busy time since i posted last, since the witsand ride i had my ruiterspad friend anelia come for a 2 day ride here and boy oh boy, the morning rainy ride was very nice, but the afternoon ride was incredible. The morning ride i was on inka and she was an absolute sweetheart on her first rime out on the river trail. That afternoon i took zeus and dang did we hit the lightning and thunder jackpot. Left, right, above, in front and from behind, we had chains bore in to the ground, the dark skies lit up purple all around and the ground as well as the sky rumbled violently as we rode our calm steeds in to the storm. The horses weren't bothered by the show at all, i was beyond excited on that ride, my eyes and mouth were wide open with awe as the show unfolded around us. Back at the stables we untacked and had some lovely rain pour down afterwards. I guess since i was riding zeus, a thunder and lightning show was bound to happen😃

This easter weekend i had a group on Saturday, 2 groups on Sunday and one group on monday and am i exhausted from those few days, i did quite a lot of other work in between as well.

Tomorrow tolla is coming for the horses feet and i have another trail ride as well.

Since the last time i posted me and ian went on our trip up to johburg to get our sw**dish friend and be dropped off at maui to get our set of travel wheels, an iveco camper and wow, what an adventure it was. We named the camper evee and traversed the kruger park with it for 3 days. We set off from OR tambo to maui, from there o er 600km to the kruger, from there to the blade river canyon where we stayed for 2 nights, we explored the canyon, the 3 rondawels, gods window, ect. We even did a short horse ride with some very grumpy horses, well trained and in no way in pain, just grumpy and fat😆 from there we drove all the way down just past Bloemfontein to a camp site we had to ourselves, on arrival we met the very friendly owner and even shuved a beer in his hand, which he didn't refuse at the slightest😅 next day we booked it for plettenberg bay and stayed 2 nights there as well, we did a kayak tour where we set off in to the ocean on rough sees and made our way in to the river mouth in to calm waters, that was an epic experience I'd do over in a heart beat again. We went to birds paradise as well, the second day we left for oudshoorn to go to the wild life park, we got to pet some cheetah cubs and adult ones as well. Form there we went to the Congo caves and did the whole tunnel tour, damm i loved it so much i wished for the tunnel to never end, that same night we drove through to swellendam and spent the night at Ian's parent's house. Next day we left for Cape town/kommetjie, there we spent the night at a campsite, we explored the area to Simons town and went to the crystal scratch patch and boy oh boy did the remainder of my money go down the crystal drain there🙈 i came home with some expensive specimens. The next day we explored past noordhoek to the lighthouse and from there we drove towards the airport port to Maui's cape town branch to hand in evee whose traveled over 1300km with us and who endured our shenanigans, we were quite emotional to let her go. We got the jeep back from long stay and went back to swellendam, that same night me ian and calle drove home to malgas, we were so tired, but sooo happy to be home, especially me, i ran straight to the horses.

Then the wedding happened, went really well, was fun and unfortunately stan wasn't my mount as he was just so spooky for whatever reason, so i went with the safest option, trusty old totius, he looked so gorgeous, thanks to Naomi who prepared him.

After the wedding we had a few good rides here, in vermaaklikheid, swellendam and witsand.

Me Naomi faf and totius were part of the swellendam show parade, the horses were so chilled with all the commotion around them.

Last weekend me with my gorgeous new horse zeus and naomi with her fafie went to witsand for a 2 day camping ride allong with other riders and boy oh boy was it extremely fun, can't wait to do it again guys😃

I haven't spoken much about zeus as i did agree to not show him to much, especially from the beginning, on social media, but in short he's such a sweet well natured THB gelding, he's only 5 and has gone through a lot in his short life so far. He went from needing a little help to the amazing boy he is now. He has done a few short rides here and then a ride all the way from the pont to home and then last weekend i thought I'd test him out in witsand on the beach, he did not disappoint at all, especially when i figured out what his racing button was🤣 he worked very hard those 2 days and now is enjoying the week off so far, he's more suited to being a kids donkey than an actual race horse😆 i never thought that here would ever be a THB on the farm, then came along ceasar and never did i think I'd ever own a THB and yet, there he is, a big lump of love.

The field horses are mostly doing good except for old lukie and flash who has to come home this weekend for some feed as they aren't coping in the drying fields like the other horses.

Tolla is coming again within the next 3 weeks to do the horses feet.

All in all things are still rolling allong, we've tilled the fields to get them ready for sowing some barley and wheat as well as some grass seed in some camps for grazing, i really need to try and get our tall fence up to keep the elande out as they destroyed my planting season last year, my animals barely got a mouth full😡 and i see the buck are back and has been for the last 3 days now, i want to chase them off, but it won't help, can't wait to get my hunting permits, sorry for those who might hate me for that, but they have no conservation being done on them, they are in**ed and over populated. So 3 going missing during August won't hurt the over 600 in**ed eland roaming around. Plus it's not for profit, it's to feed my family and workers.

Speaking of family, my dad's been in and out the hospital again, because of an infection in his middle toe, they're going to amputate his toe tomorrow. Holding thumbs it goes great.

My goodness how the time has flown by, I've had so many incredible trail rides this season, so many new and interesting people. I must admit this season was rather dry when it came to treats for the horses, they were all so disappointed that i had to go and buy carrots for them to give them after every ride just to lift their spirits, last season they were so spoiled that their mouths were stained orange for a long time.

I got in a new livery mare and her 3 month old foal, they are both just the sweetest things, the mom is mainly here so i can help her gain weight and to help the 2 of them socialize more.

Inka is doing great in her training, I've done the 4 hour bundu bash ride with her and yesterday i did the river trail with her and she was just phenomenal.

The field horses are all still doing good on the little grazing that's left over from a massive herd of 60 plus eland that camped here for a week plus and the hot sun drying out everything, luckily the riverine camp is still looking good so I'm going to send a few horses over to that side soon to give the mountain a rest.

I also got in another beautiful project horse about 8 weeks ago, with lots of fat building and now muscle building to do, he will soon join the ranks of the trail rides, a massive 16h plus thb gelding, he's such a sweet gentle soul.

Then antie loon, luna, has also joined the trail riding ranks as she turned out to be a stunning kids horse, just goes to show that i shouldn't give up to quickly on a slow horse, she has taken out quite a few kids over the season and one kiddy actually wanted to take her home🙈

Then in other news, the 10th of February is my big day, me and Ian are getting married and before that we're going away on a 2 week trip, my trusty partner in crime Naomi will be looking after the horses for me in that time, thank you Naomi😅

Tonto is much loved and being spoiled at his new home. Thank you Adrè for the heart warming photos today.

I think it's time i post something on this once lively and cherished page of mine, the place i use to share my love of horses with everyone and get some therapy as well by talking about my life. The reason I've been very quiet is that the last few months have been not only very busy, but emotionally draining as well, the stress I've been feeling was and is almost overwhelming, to the point that I'm just to tired to make the tiny effort of typing something here. It's still stressful, but I'm not the only one and i shouldn't let it all get me down.

Now with that out of the way, let me dive right in to a summarized update on what's been going on here.

So last time i made a post we were going to move the herds to the riverine camps and we did, the grass was absolutely stunning and the horses that were starting to look a bit on the skinny side, almost immediately picked up weight again, at the end of their time there they were rolling home.

They're all now back in the upper fields and still looking great, summer is on us now and i must admit I'm worried that if we don't get some more rain soon the field's won't keep up with the sun and the mouths to feed.

I currently have a few horses home for training or just the normal bunch that need their foodies.

The winter rides were almost nonexistent, except for a few people who came to ride. Maya is off to cape town to start her now adventure there with her parents, but phantom remains here at the stables, she does come visit him and with her new riding school attitude she has acquired, the poor boy's days of getting away with things, are over😁

Tonto will be leaving tomorrow to join his new home. Sad, but one less mouth that eats the field grass, making way for the rest to eat a bit more.

I got another very generous gift from mariette, storm, lukkie, inka and dixies previous owner in the form of 3 treeless saddles, 2 bridals and quite a few other incredible items that will help me and the horses a lot, thank you mariette so so much for everything you have given me over the years, the best thank you and way i can prepay you is by looking after the 4 horses you entrusted to me over the years and so far i believe I'm doing a great job at it.

Our amazing farrier tolla was here last week and did his incredible patient magic on all the horses, including diane's 2 boys harry and percy. Most of the horses were very well behaved, except for a few rotten apples like darling who was the worst, but is normally the sweetest pony🤣

Nimbus is getting older as well, he is now 1 year and 2 months old, i don't think he'll be very big, but we'll see at age 3 to 4 where he stands😁 he's looking gorgeous and is getting a bit talkative to the mares now, as long as he behaves, he gets to keep his jewels, we'll only till at least 2 or 3 years, so he can grow his best.

Other than all that, i had 10 lammies born, the colors and patterns on them are lucky packet worthy, they truly came out weird🤣 no one could predict what they'd look like. I also got 2 new ill de fraans rams, absolutely stunning creatures. So far I'm on 40 sheep😃 i went from 23 when i first started, got to 110, sold them, had 13 left and now 40, the numbers are slowly climbing again, soon I'll have my flock of mostly IDF sheep and donnie merinos.

Well that was just a fly over up date, if i go in to details I'd have to make separate posts and that will take some time😅😁

Busy afternoon at Milkwood Horse Trails.
Faffa continued his box training and did exceptionally well. Without lunging loaded the second attempt with ease. He freaked out a bit when we closed up behind him, but 3rd time lucky he stood still and calm.
Then we started with Strawberry. She had quite the bad experience with boxing, so she isn't so excepting of this new idea. But non the less she did a great job today and we got her on the ramp at least without a tantrum. That was good enough for me today.
Tonto came home to get back into riding before he leaves us to be a wonderful kids pony at a fantastic new home. Not to far from us, which is a bonus and we can visit him often.

13/08/2023

It's been a quiet week with the horses. Sandra and I have been busy with work.

I finally got the halter on Nimbus last weekend. Been fiddling around with it, so he can get used to the scary head monster. Yesterday I took him in the ring for some lead work, but he reacted so well that we continued training for over an hour. The time flew by so fast. We ended training with him responding to voice commands during lunging. Huge milestone for Nimbus.

Then it was Ragnar's turn. He took the bit for the first time like he's been ridden for years. The saddle was a bit scary, but not a horse eating monster. Once girthed up, I took off the reins and let him go, expecting bucks and tantrums. But no, he just had to be a bit of a boring bu**er. Only took off in a canter for 2 rounds and stopped. Couldn't care any less about this thing on his back. He is just born to be ridden.

Today was just a lazy Sunday. Sandra rode a few field horses just to remind them they are still riding horses. Even Cher was just a normal old horse. While Sandra was busy with them, I had a bit of a special moment with Vlaampie. Kinda showed her that being scratch on other places besides the butt can be nice too. Then I got two really nice big and long horsey hugs from her. Such a special old soul.

04/07/2023

Another post for a change, this time nit to much has gone on. With winter on us the rides has just about stoped, which is ok, because the field horses in all honestly aren't in the best shape, they are still in good condition, but as you all saw in most other pictures they are almost overweight fat and now some are in the condition i guess they should be, other's still fat like the ponies and lape🙈 and some, like 2 are a little ribby like cj and milla, they should come home for some feed to help them fatten up quicker, but the field is bringing up their weight slowly. After all the rain we had the grass and other good plants are growing wildly. Soon I'm off to inspect the neighbor's fields and then I'm splitting up the herds to be placed in the riverine camps and nextdoor, the good doers will stay in the upper fields.

Me and Naomi had another horsey trip to fetch a friesian stallion foal, he's Naomi's new boy and with him standing next to Nimbus, i can see he's going to be a decent size.

Speaking of Nimbus, the little w**d is now 9, or 10 months old, i have to check again😅, to our horror it would seem that he's graying out, I'm still hoping he'll go palomino, but a gray is still better than a bay or chestnut, because I've got a lot of those🤣🙈

I haven't done much with all the project horses as I've been working a lot and the rain we had has just been delaying a lot of things and preventing us from sticking our heads out the window.

Hopefully this month i can bring home a few projects and start work again.

14/05/2023

It's been about 2 months of trying and trying to post something, every time the page says post has been shared and then it never does, I've given up for a while, so lets try try try again.

A lot has happened since i last posted, many many rides and some milestone rides as well.

I took inka out on her first trail ride at a location she has never been at or seen, besides the beginning that she reared up with Naomi and ran me in to the ground, after i decided to take her she did very well.

I took makadas out on another ride after letting him off for a month and he was just the sweetest thing under the sun, his personality started to show and he's so curious about everything and loves to walk in the road like a drunk snake, left right left right. He didn't flinch at all when a car came from the back or the front, in fact he was only interested in the grass along the road. He gave me a few short but very nice trots, i tried getting him in to a canter but he was content with the trots he gave me and so were i in the end.

Me and Naomi took storm cassa and phantom to infanta and road around in the village, the horses were just amazing, especially cassa who is still so green, she did very well for her first boxing in 7 years and then being saddled and ridden in a very unfamiliar place with lots going on.

I had a big riding weekend 2 weeks ago, but I'll try and make a separate post about that and a separate post about a new 11km trail we have potentially opened up, this one will definitely be a huge hit with the more adventurous and experienced riders.

Then in recent news the vet was out to shave down stan's teeth, clean out his gunky sheath and just give him and over all check up. Then the vet also shaved down inkas teeth as she was having difficulty eating sometimes and drooling a lot, she's now eating well and looks like she's just feeling a whole lot better.

Baby Nimbus, as always, is growing like a w**d and looking so handsome now, he's definitely going to be an absolutely stunning horse when he grows up.

The field horses are hanging in there, the field has burned up due to the sun and no rain, but luckily for us all the rains have come and we had rain for 3 days on and off. The grass is going to grow like the w**d it is and hopefully bring the field horses condition back up, they aren't skinny, just not as over weight as I'm use to🙈

A lot more has happened but this is just a little update.

26/03/2023

The field horses were moved to the bigger riverine camp across the road from where they were and wow they really picked up weight in all that good grass. Me and Maya did some exploration of the camp and had a nice stroll in the saltpan.

I had quite a few riders come for the long weekend and on the Saturday i believe, i had a a staggering 3 groups of riders😬 i felt sorry for the horses, but it was all walking and all 3 rides were luckily the short pine forest trail, they were rewarded very handsomely after each trail. The sunday we had one group come to ride and as always the horses were just incredible.

This coming weekend we have another ride that we will be joining, but this time out of our comfort zones with strawberry and cassa😱 and as such we begin yesterday with their box training🤣 a little late, but rather that than never or trying to shove them in. Cassa got right in no problem, strawberry took some time and bribery, but to my huge surprise she got in. Today she got in again🥳 looking good for that ride.

Nimbus is over 6 months old and still not weaned as i feel to sorry for him, but i did modify a halter for him, i put 3 dull spikes on the nose part of the halter and that's enough to make zena squeal at him and walk away, he was without a teat in mouth for the entire day and even now she's a bit hesitant to let him drink.

All in all the horses are all doing good

13/03/2023

We moved the field horses to the riverine camp and i decided to jump on lape a bit, she hasn't been ridden in almost a year i want to say and yet she just wasn't bothered at all even when i asked her to walk around.

Me and Naomi did a few rides including riding sailor and faf to the field horses to fill up their water.

Maya and i did the windmill trail and a few jumps over the bloekom logs. Afterwards she grabbed katrina and the pienk saddle amd omg how adorable it all was. Katrina is still here as her owner has paid in money for food again and hasn't given any indication of when he'd come fetch her, which is ok with me, because she's just so cute and I'm not feeding her out of my pocket.

Nimbus is very close to his weaning date, shame, i hate to do it, but it's for his moms sake, I'm also planning on getting an injection to help zena stop making milk, then perhaps they can still be together.

Ian also took an interest in inka and has started her schooling process, i have to say inka learns very quickly and is doing so well with him riding her. Plus it's a huge deal fir ian to just be at the stables, let alone ride😱 he's ridden inka twice now, lets hope he keeps it up.

Then this weekend me and Naomi ventured off to Robertson with totius and ceasar to join up with a bunch of other riders to do a 25km ride in to the mountains, needless to say our horses can do it and they did very very well, but they just couldn't keep up with all those fiery and lively Arabian and Arabian crosses, we were far behind, but it was an experience and a half. We slept in the horsebox, well i wish i could've slept. I was up constantly checking to see if our 2 horses were still in their make shift camp, they did escape twice🙈 i was so tired the next day. Me and Naomi decided to cut the weekend short by leaving the Saturday instead of the Sunday and believe me was i happy to get a goooood night's rest in for once.

All in all I'd definitely do it again, but with a more lively horse like strawberry perhaps.

28/02/2023

Since the 14th me and Naomi did a few relaxed rides on faf and buddy, both did soooo good, buddy is such a sweety and like i said before i see a lot of kiddies falling in love with him.

Livery pony katrina only has a week and a few days left here before she heads home, shame poor oupa will be heart broken as the 2 of them has formed quite the bond. I don't want to, but I'm thinking about asking Katrina's owner if he could meybe take oupa with as a companion for her, if things don't work out well i can always go get him and bring him home again, but I'm also so scared that he may not be treated the best, not saying he doesn't treat his animals well, but i mean like being chased to places instead of leading or gentle nudges ect. We'll see.

Baby Nimbus is 5 months old and as much as i would love for him to remain with his mother till at least 8 months, I've decided to wean him next month as I'm struggling to get any weight on old zena, he's just sucking the life out of her old body and i can't have that anymore. He's eating very well and I'm planning on tossing him in with phantom with zena just nextdoor with dixie.

The field horses have unfortunately lost some condition so I'm planning on moving them to the beautifully lush riverine camp as soon as i can.

One camp is already planted and another is on the way.

Makie is also doing very well still, i took him around the ring camp and inside the ring as well for a walk and a little trot to his stable, he did so so well.

The swellendam show is this weekend, unfortunately i missed the entry date to enter totius in a class or 2 Saturday, but that's ok, next year😃

All in all the horses are doing great.

I also acquired a pink tekna saddle that i still have to pick up, in the mean time a little girl is enjoying it a lot more than i ever will.

I also got the opportunity to take pictures of the zonkey stallion down by infanta and wow is he gorgeous.

Milkwood Horse Trails

The energy of the milkwood tree brings a deep sense of connection and belonging. The energy of the milkwood tree can assist us with feeling at home on the Earth – it connects you with your personal power, and reminds you on the cellular level that we are all one family. The name Milkwood Horse Trails came about connecting people, nature and animals in the beautiful place called Malagas.

Malagas is a settlement on the Western bank of the Breede River in the Overberg District of the Western Cape, approximately 30 kilometres south-east of Swellendam, accessible along a gravel road that turns off the N2 National road just west of Swellendam, which eventually leads to the mouth of the Breede River at Cape Infanta. Access is also possible via Bredasdorp.

The name Malagas is probably an adaptation of the Portuguse mangas de velludo, “velvet sleeves”, referring to the cape gannet with its black-tipped wings. Malagas is described as a place of exceptional beauty and peacefulness and the southern bank of the River is lined with idyllic homes, framed by the Potberg Mountain range, many with their own jetty. Tidal action reaches 55km up-river and fishing kabeljou, grunter, leervis and steenbras is any fisherman’s delight. The river is renowned as the best estuary fishing location in the country.

Malagas is a bird-watching paradise and African Fish Eagle, Cape Vulture, White Stork, Sunbird and Blue Crane are commonly sighted. The famous Whale Trail begins in the Potberg area and ends in De Hoop. The nostalgic pontoon ferry at Malagas operates from sunrise to sunset and is the last man-hauled pontoon cable ferry in South Africa. It is the only vehicular crossing to the Eastern bank in the area for further access to the Breede River mouth at Witsand.
