Training tip of the day: don’t apply too much leash pressure if your dog is already doing what you’ve asked them to do!

Does your dog rush out of the kennel when you open the door? Before they can escape, close the door several times. Your dog will start to learn that just because the door is open, doesn’t mean they are welcome to come out.

Keep your dog accountable 🤍 If you ask for a down, make sure they stick to it until you release them. Advocate for their space even if there are dogs barking and passing by outside a dog park, so they are held accountable for what you are asking for.

Here are some tips on how to start kennel training with your dog! Always have a leash on your dog in the beginning so you can guide them into the kennel. Use both the leash as well as your body guidance to keep them from rushing out of the crate. For the first couple times keep sessions short and repeat going in and out of the kennel often before you have them settle for longer periods of time. Once they are ready, work on spending some time in the crate while you are home first. Build up time slowly and only let them out if they aren’t whining. Let me know if you have any questions!

While the treadmill is an excellent tool for physical activity, it is also a great tool for mental stimulation. Staying on the treadmill and walking at the same pace requires a lot of mental energy from a dog. It can also be a great confidence booster!

Solidifying the ‘place’ command

Giving your dog a job like ‘heel’ can help greatly with their state of mind on walks.

Whenever I give a command, I ask the dog to hold that command until they are released. This helps to create clear expectations for the dog. For example, say you are walking with your dog and stop at an intersection. At the intersection, you ask your dog for a sit until it is your turn to cross. You don’t want your dog getting up from that sit and potentially rushing into oncoming traffic. For reasons like this, I use duration with all commands I teach.
