Hey y’all! A past customer is looking for a BCM rooster from my line. Unfortunately, I don’t have any extras at the moment, so I’m reaching out to others in the Sacramento area. If you are letting one go that you’ve hatched or purchased from me, please send me a PM, and I can connect you. Thanks! 🙏🏻

As spring draws near, I’m getting more and more inquiries about hatching eggs and chicks as my waitlist continues to grow. As much as I am grateful for the interest, I want to remind everyone that I am just a hobbyist. I am not a big hatchery. I have small breeding pens, and my goal is to breed for quality, not quantity.

Breeding chickens is just something I enjoy, and the beautiful eggs (and meat) are a bonus. A number of the eggs I collect get sent to shows while many chicks that I hatch are sent to grow out pens. That leaves a *very* limited number of hatching eggs and chicks that I make available to others to help pay for feed and maintenance costs.

In addition, I am also at the mercy of the weather and the chickens themselves. We typically have a late winter and often still have sub-freezing temperatures until after Mother’s Day in May. That means my laying season starts very late. I know some breeders have chickens that lay all through the winter. I am not one of those. Most of my chickens have now stopped laying for the winter, and I am unsure of when they will start back up. My hope is that they will be laying again by February/March.

If you are on my waitlist, I thank you for your patience and will let you know as soon as I have something available. Until then, enjoy this photo of the last olive eggs I collected before the laying hiatus and feel free to reach out if you have any questions about my chickens or my goals for this year. Thanks! ☺️

Recently took a dive into sourdough and trying to figure out ways to use up the discard (and also the plethora of eggs we have been getting from our Olive Eggers). This discard pasta is a keeper! We used all 9 eggs because my boys made their own pasta dough too, and it was so delicious. ☺️

My favorite Ameraucana cockerel this year. He’s got great structure and is super solid with a beautiful green sheen for being only 6 months old. Hoping his wing drops a bit more as he fills out, but otherwise, I love him. 💕

Love this range the olive eggers are putting out! This is the first time I’ve gotten a truly “gray” egg (front two) from a heavy bloomed olive, and I am *obsessed.* 😍

Between the molting, shorter days, and colder temps, I am barely getting any eggs this fall! I would usually have laying pullets by now but because I started hatching season so late in the year (and my pullets typically take longer to lay than other breeds we have), I don’t have any new pullets laying yet. I sent a set of Marans eggs to nationals but know they likely won’t win since the only Marans hen still laying isn’t laying the dark eggs I typically send to shows. Plus, the mud and rain mean dirty, scratched up eggs that earn fewer points for condition. It’s a bummer, but it’s all in good fun! Hatching season will definitely have to start sooner next year. I’ll be finishing evaluations tomorrow so that I can sort breeding pens. Until then, enjoy this assortment of eggs that I recently collected. ☺️

*He does not have a halo. It’s just the way the single light is shining down right on his neck. 😅

At least he’ll be yummy in a stewpot.

The chickens are slowing down on egg production with the changing temperatures and daylight. I didn’t bother waterglassing eggs this fall because we still have half a 5-gallon bucket full of eggs left over from last year. Once the pullets and hens stop laying for the winter, we’ll be dipping back into that stash for cooking and baking needs so that we won’t have to spend money on store-bought eggs. It’s expensive enough keeping these freeloaders fed all winter. 🥲😅🫠

Twice a year, I dig out all the runs for compost and replace with fresh mulch. Definitely feeling super blessed to have my dad help me with this while I’m still recovering. It’s a 3 hour round trip for him, and he never hesitates to come when I ask. 🥹

Constantly checking on my chickens while I am recovering from c-section surgery. My husband and mother-in-law have taken over their care, and they are definitely well taken care of. Ignore the feathers. They are molting. Hard. 😅

Guess what? Chicken butt!

This boy lost the back of his comb after a fight with another male last winter, but he’s now happily in a pen with some olive eggers for some back-cross projects. He was paired previously with a couple of BCM hens that would help correct some faults in his offspring (high tail/white feather in the tail and general size), so we’ll see how they do in time. I just love the green sheen in his feathers. ☺️
