"How can I be a responsible dog owner?" 🐶

In celebration of Responsible Dog Ownership Month, these are three ways you can make sure you are a responsible dog owner!

1. Ensure your dog is getting enough physical exercise & mental stimulation through daily walks, playtime, enrichment toys, socialisation and more.

2. Access to proper health, nutrition & veterinary care is essential - not just for your dog's day-to-day but in case of an emergency.

3. Muzzle training your dog is part of being a responsible owner. Even if your dog doesn't need a muzzle day-to-day, you never know when that 'just in case' moment might arise. We highly advise acclimating your dog to a muzzle as part of your regular training journey.

The Baskerville Classic Muzzle is perfect for scavengers.

It has been designed specifically to stop your dog from ingesting unsafe or unknown objects/substances when out on walks without compromising their comfort or ability to enjoy their life!

Whether you're worried about your dog eating rocks or something more specific, like the 1080 bait used in Australia, we highly recommend our Classic Muzzle.

It also has a removable guard which can help with training, ensuring your dog can take treats as a reward whenever needed.

Seeing a muzzled dog can often leave people feeling unsure on how to respond but it's important to remember, muzzles do not always signify aggressive dogs.

Here are some things to think and do when you see a muzzled dog...

- Give them some space!
- Remember, the dog and their owner are just doing their best for themselves and those around them.
- Perhaps they are a scavenger...
- They might be in a situation that makes them nervous, so do what you can to alleviate any additional pressure (walk at a distance, keep your dog on a lead if you have one etc.)

What else do you think & do to help bring positivity into a situation where a dog is wearing a muzzle? Let us know in the comments!

Struggling to get an accurate measure for your muzzle? Here are our 3 top tips for measuring your dog's face.

Tip 1 - be sure to use a soft measuring tape or a piece of string and wrap this around the widest part of their nose.

Tip 2 - ensure your measuring tape or string isn't wrapped so tightly that it presses into the skin. A light touch on the fur should be sufficient.

Tip 3 - especially if you have a puppy or a dog that is losing or gaining weight, make sure to re-measure regularly!

Every dog is different, with snouts in all shapes and sizes. Here's a few tips to ensure your dog is comfortable in their muzzle 🐶

An extra tip from the team - we advise against keeping your dog muzzled for extended periods of time wherever possible. Have your dog wear their muzzle for short intervals, and constantly ensure they are not showing signs of discomfort, stress or agitation.

"Muzzle won’t stop him having the best times🥹💙"

We absolutely love seeing muzzles shown in such a positive light. Especially for those whose dogs now must wear a muzzle out of legal necessity, we want to spread the message that life can still be fun and beautiful.

Just because I'm wearing a muzzle, that doesn't mean that I am...

Vicious, dangerous, a bad dog, badly trained or that you should be worried.

It might just mean that I am...

Nervous around new places or faces, on my training journey, a scavenger or trying to keep myself and others safe!

Remember, never judge a dog by their muzzle! There are so many reasons why dogs wear muzzles. Help spread the message & break the stigma.

We often receive comments about whether a muzzle is a 'good fit' or not. So, what does a well-fitted muzzle actually look like?

If your muzzle fits correctly...

✅ It won't irritate your dog's eyes.
✅ It won't touch the tip of your dog's nose.
✅ It will leave your dog enough room to pant freely.
✅ It will be secure when fastened and won't slip off.

These are the first things to check when it comes to fitting a muzzle, but each dog is different. Make sure that you know what comfort/discomfort looks like for your dog.

For any questions about muzzle sizing or fit, drop us a DM and we'll be happy to help!

It's National Train Your Dog Awareness Month! 🐶

We advocate making muzzle training a standard part of your dog's training journey.

Whether it's to protect your dog & others in stressful situations, such as the vet, or you simply want to be extra safe for that 'just in case' moment, Remember, you never know how your dog may react if they’re pain or feeling stressed!

Here is everything we know so far about the XL Bully ban...

From the 1st of February, it will be illegal to own an XL Bully dog in England and Wales, unless you have a Certificate of Exemption for your dog.

If you are exempt, you must do the following;

✅ Microchip your dog.
✅ Muzzle your dog and keep them on a lead in public.
✅ Neuter your dog.
✅ Obtain third-party insurance against your dog injuring other people – this can be provided through Dogs Trust Membership.
✅ Be over 16 years old.

Owners have until 31 January to obtain their certificate of exemption.

To get your exemption certificate, you must visit the gov.uk website and apply online.

This is undoubtedly a worrying time for XL owners, and we hope that we can provide the support and education to make it a little less scary.

How to tackle new situations with your dog: muzzle edition!

Muzzles can be a great tool if you're working on getting your dog used to new situations, particularly if they have a tendency to get nervous or unsettled.

Let's say you're working to get your dog used to public transport. Our advice would be;

1. Start Slow: take a small journey on a train or bus at a non-busy time and stay quite close to home.

2. Practice Little & Often: repeating the journey little and often will give your dog a chance to develop their confidence without feeling rushed or pressured. Don't be put out if this takes a long time - every dog is different.

3. Make It Fun: at the end of the journey, take your dog for a run around in a park or to pick up some treats so they start to associate the journey with something positive!

We'd love to hear how muzzles have helped you and your dog! Drop us a comment below 👇

These are our top tips on how to answer questions from strangers (or people you know, for that matter) about why your dog wears a muzzle.

Keep calm, be honest, don't be afraid to walk away if the conversation becomes unproductive but above all, remember to remain positive. Muzzle training is part of being a responsible dog owner 🐶

On the 31st of October, it was announced that XL Bully type dogs will be added to the banned breeds list in the UK.

If your dog passes the exemption process, they are required to be on a lead and muzzled in all public places.

Our advice is to start muzzle training NOW. By giving your dog the space and time to accept the muzzle in a positive way, they will have a much better relationship with this tool long-term.

So, start slowly with short training sessions on a frequent basis - we recommend 5 minutes twice a day - and always making sure to reward with treats!

If you have any questions about how best to go about introducing the muzzle to your dog, drop us a comment or DM, and our team will be able to guide you.

Here at Baskerville, one of our non-negotiables is that our muzzles must allow your dog to pant.

But why do we make such a big deal out of this? Well, if your dog can't pant, they can't breathe properly!

Unlike humans, dogs can't sweat to regulate their temperature. Instead, they pant.

That's why it's so vital that the muzzle you choose allows your dog to breathe properly!

Whether it's rushing your dog to accept the muzzle before they are ready or using a muzzle that doesn't quite fit, these are the top 3 mistakes we tend to see in muzzle training.

The biggest mistake, though, is not muzzle training at all.
