I don't know about you guys, but for quite a while I felt let down that I couldn't have the fanciest, most beautiful coop worthy of a full spread in a magazine.
You all know what I'm talking about, the wallpapered coops, fit with a chandelier, crisp white boxes, accents of greens and yellows, the works.

But the reality is, as a single income family of five that just was not in the cards.
Do you know what we did have though?
An old shed in the back yard.
And with some minor adjustments, and very little money we made it a happy and healthy environment a full flock can thrive in.

Your chicken house doesn’t have to be the most beautiful, modern, or glamorous coop. The most important part is its functionality! Here are some key aspects to keep in mind to ensure a happy and healthy flock:

1. **Ventilation**: Proper airflow is crucial to prevent moisture buildup and keep the air fresh.
2. **Space**: Ensure there’s enough room for each chicken to roam and roost comfortably.
3. **Nesting Boxes**: Provide clean, cozy nesting boxes for egg-laying.
4. **Perches**: Offer perches for roosting to keep chickens off the ground at night.
5. **Predator Protection**: Secure the coop to keep predators out and your chickens safe.
6. **Cleanliness**: Regularly clean the coop to prevent disease and pests.
7. **Access to Outdoors**: Give your chickens access to an outdoor run for exercise and foraging.

Focus on these essentials, and your flock will thrive, no matter how simple or rustic the coop may look!

For me- this is what it's all about.

This means that their diet is more diverse, including bugs, worms, grass, and other natural goodies. 🌱🐛🐜 As a result, their eggs have a higher nutritional value compared to eggs from chickens raised in confinement. Free-range eggs tend to have more omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins A and E, and beta-carotene, which gives the yolks a vibrant and deep orange color. Iron tail would be proud of these deep walnut eggs. Does anyone else out there remember iron tail? "And from this day forward, all easter eggs should be colored the shade of MUD."
Even as a kid I loved his eggs, he was a bunny ahead of his time. 🐰
