A tribe in Nigeria, the Igbo People believed in their traditional religion that Ball Pythons were sacred and highly revered. If a Ball Python slithered into a village, it would be left to itself. if one was killed on accident, the members of the village would throw a small funeral for it and bury it. Some of that tradition is still carried on to this day.

The ball python derives its name from its unique adaptation wherein it rolls into a ball when threatened. Its scientific name, Python regius, can be traced to the Egyptian legend, according to which Cleopatra, the queen of Egypt, used to wear these snakes around her wrists as bracelets. As for the name royal python, it is derived from the word, Regius, which is Latin for 'royal'.

Did you know that some snakes have holes below their noses that are used to sense heat. That's right they're not for sniffing but for sensing body heat to identify prey. Although they do use their tongues to smell their food, their heat pits are used more often. These heat pits are called labial pits. It's important that if you feed your snake frozen thawed rodents, that rodent is warmed up. And remember, NEVER WARM A RODENT IN THE MICROWAVE.

So sorry yesterday was missed 😫

Fact of the day: Did you know some snakes have feet? Well kind of. Some snakes, like our ball pythons, have spurs near the end of their tails that are remnants of feet. Its believed that years ago some snakes had legs like lizards and they eventually adapted to what they are today. These spurs kind of remind me of fingernails on the snake.

Fact of the day: have you ever seen a video of a lizard climbing up the side of a building and wondered how? Many people think they have little suction cups on their feet. They actually have very tiny microscopic hairs on the bottom of their feet. These hairs have an affect to surfaces called Van der Waals. This is basically a chemical reaction that helps them "stick". This is Martin hanging out on his favorite piece of wood today 😊

Fact of the day: Do you know where corn snakes got their names? A long time ago farmers found them in their corn fields with full bellies. They thought the snakes were eating their corn. Come to find out the snakes were eating the rats that were eating the corn. Then the farmers didn't mind them and let them hang around. Another reason is the scales on the bottom of their bellies resemble corn. Pictures taken from morph market. These snakes are all available from reptiles by alex.

Fact of the day: Did you know the s*x of a painted turtle isn't determined by their genetics? Its determined by the temperature the eggs are incubated. Colder temperatures make boys, and warmer temperatures, usually above 84 degrees farenheit, make females. This means almost every turtle in a nest will be the same s*x.

Best exotic pet: the first pet is going to be a kingsnake. Any locality of a kingsnake is going to be taken care of pretty similarly. They get around 4 feet long which is very manageable. They're almost always willing to eat which is a pro and a con as they can easily become obese. They like plants to slither around and lots of hides to go into. Kingsnakes also love to burrow. Chances are most of the day they will be hidden under their substrate or in a hide. They are very hardy snakes and can adapt to new surrounding fairly quickly. When getting a kingsnake we started out with a 20 gal terrarium. We added a 50 watt heat emitting day bulb as well as a 50 watt heat emitting night bulb to keep the temperature warm. Many people will recommend an under the tank heat mat but we found the bulbs to work best for our particular snake. We also keep her on a thick layer of Aspen bedding. Although not shown in the picture, it makes great borrowing substrate. Also be sure to keep clean water in their cages. We recommend a bowl bug enough for them to soak in. Kingsnakes prefer ambient temperatures of around 85 on the warm side and 75 on the cool side during the day. At night we lower it to about 75 on the warm side and in the high 60s on the cool. To learn about exactly what we recommend purchasing feel free to ask!

Fact of the day: snakes shed their skin to grow. They create an oil between the new and old skin. Oftentimes they look blue during this process. Once that old skin is off, the snake will be much brighter. Helping a snake shed its skin DOES NOT hurt the snake if done properly.
