Scents rule a dog’s life. They’re invisible yet everywhere. Part of your dog’s fun on a walk is to sniff and discover what has been before. To allow your dog to sniff is to work your dog’s nose and their brain. Scenting can tire a dog out, often more than physical exercise alone.
Don’t be a yanker.

Pets NEED to use their brains as much as we do. Teach them manners, tricks, anything!! 🤩

Have you ever wondered how to choose the perfect pet? 🤔
A vet nurse can be incredibly helpful when choosing a new pet to suit your family and lifestyle. Here are some of the ways we can assist you:
* Understanding Your Lifestyle ~ A vet nurse will take time to understand your daily routines, activity levels, and the amount of time you can dedicate to a pet.
* Assessing Family Dynamics ~ We can evaluate your family structure, considering factors like the ages of your children, the presence of elderly family members, or any other pets in the home.
* Health and Temperament Advice ~ Vet nurses have in-depth knowledge of various breeds and species, including their common health issues, temperaments, and exercise needs.
* Understanding Allergies and Health Concerns ~ If anyone in your family has allergies or specific health concerns, a vet nurse can suggest hypoallergenic breeds or pets less likely to trigger reactions. They can also offer advice on managing allergies in the home.
* Long-Term Commitment ~ We will help you understand the long-term responsibilities associated with different pets, including life expectancy, grooming, diet, and medical care needs.
* Behavioural Insights ~ If you’re considering a rescue pet, a vet nurse can provide insights into behavioural issues that may come with certain animals, helping you decide if you’re ready to take on a pet with special needs or past trauma.
* Connecting with Reputable Sources ~ Vet nurses often have connections with reputable breeders, shelters, or rescue organizations. They can direct you to places where pets are well cared for and ethically bred or housed.
* Post-Adoption Support ~ After choosing a pet, a vet nurse can continue to support you by providing advice on integration into your home, training, and early health care, ensuring a smooth transition for both your family and the new pet.
The expertise of an RVN can guide you in making a well-informed decision that leads to a happy and healthy

Hi, I’m Hannah Shepherd, a Registered Vet Nurse with a long-standing passion for animal care 🐾. Since qualifying in 1995, I’ve worked in diverse vet practices, from large and small animal clinics to ECC night hospitals and wildlife conservation. Four years ago, I took a leap and launched ‘The Vet Nurse - Pet Nanny,’ offering non-clinical pet care services in my local community. Anything from drop-in visits and nail clips, to nutrition & behaviour guidance, to home visits under the direction of the local vets I work for.
Inspired by the interest from fellow vet nurses, I developed the zumi app—a platform connecting pet owners with skilled RVNs for in-home care. I spent 2.5 years working with app developers and consulting with the RCVS and BVNA to ensure that the app stays within the scope of what independent RVNs can do within the Code of Professional Conduct.
Remember, zumi isn’t here to replace your vet but to work alongside them, ensuring your pets get the best care possible. I’m passionate about both my clinical work in practice and now also—helping pets in their own homes. There’s nothing more rewarding! 🐈🐕🩺🐾🏠

Small changes, big impact:
A vet nurse can guide you on making your home more senior pet-friendly. 🏠
It can be difficult to know what “normal” age-related changes are, or whether they are signs of disease.
RVNs can help you to seek veterinary assistance earlier to help identify issues, prevent suffering and ensure your pet’s quality of life remains high ♥️
