Picture of a dog’s ear from Reno posted from Washoe County Animal Services. Yes there are ticks to a small extent here in Basin, and you don’t have to go far to find lots of them.

Hello everyone.
Just to throw it out there.... Yes, we are aware of the online posts regarding a potential algae ingestion dog fatality in the Tahoe Basin.
There is no information at this time confirming whether that dog's death was caused by cyanotoxicity (algae bloom) at this time, or another cause. It will likely be a week before test results are available.
We have not seen any algae toxicity cases at our hospital this year.
But we will stay updated when further information is available.
But please do not believe everything posted on social media, as it is often opinions, not verified data.
Everyone stay safe and cool out there.

For all of our doggie patients out there who are taking monthly Heartgard and Nexgard for heartworm, flea, tick, and intestinal parasite protection, we want you to know that Nexgard Plus is now available. It combines both into one monthly flavored chew now, and is cheaper than giving both products separately. When your pet needs refills, just ask!

We are hopeful to open today at 2:00 pm. Unfortunately we are still waiting for a plow to come by so we can get to the hospital.

01/03/2024

Due to weather and sporadic power outages we are encountering, we will be closing today at 3:00 pm. We appreciate your understanding.

So sad. All too common nowadays.

This past week, Dr. Galen Heyne took his own life, leaving behind a wife and 2 VERY small children, whom he loved deeply. He battled the demons that we all deal with in veterinary medicine, and unfortunately lost that battle.

This is why - Not One More Vet, Inc, exists. Our profession is 2-3x more likely to die by su***de than the general population, and we are dying left and right. Many who manage to survive their battle end up burning out and leave the profession entirely. These two things are the biggest reasons our profession is facing an unprecedented staffing crisis, why we no longer can offer on-call or after hours services, why we can no longer take on new patients or new clients — because we are dying and leaving in droves.

Please be kind and compassionate to the people who give their all to a profession that most of us have wanted to do since we were the age of Galen’s children, and often for little pay or reward. Please consider financially helping his devastated, struggling family, and keep them in your prayers:

Is your pet sore from aching joints? Are they not able to go out and do the things they used to because they are stiff and sore? There is new arthritis treatment available called Librela (for dogs), and Solensia (for cats) that is safe for almost all pets, and there are no worries about kidney or liver issues. It's a once monthly injection, that isn't technically a drug. It's actually monoclonal antibody therapy that targets the proteins involved in arthritis pain. If this sounds like something that you might be interested in, just schedule an appointment to discuss.

Librela offers long-lasting pain relief with a once-monthly injection administered by your vet.

Thought we would share a link to a good general article about the mystery respiratory illness that seems to be all over the internet right now. Please be cautious of the sources of information you read. Most researches believe it needs to be treated similar to a common cold, but monitor for signs of pneumonia complications(fever, not eating, severe lethargy, nasal discharge, wet cough).
If you want to minimize the risk of exposure, then you must keep them away from other dogs, especially groups of dogs.

Reports of an "outbreak" of some as yet unidentified canine respiratory illness are scaring dog owners. But veterinarians and researchers aren't panicking.

Due to very warm temperatures this weekend, a lot of us will be having our dogs outside to enjoy.
Be careful! The rivers will be very strong and powerful, and your dog could be swept by strong currents before you can help. Make sure river areas are safe before letting your dog in this weekend.

Just in case you all aren’t aware, we as veterinary professionals also see the same problems with our pets as you. My dog today had a ruptured mass in his spleen, requiring emergency surgery to remove it. Have to wait to see if malignant tumor or not based on lab results. We feel the same pain when our own pets are sick. Positive vibes, Silas
