Today Sarge performed very well! Not only was this his first show, 100 days ago you could even touch him! What a transformation!
We find out Sunday how we place. Regardless of placing Sarge did great!
Sarge did a great job in his on hand trail class today.
I love how willing this horse is to try anything! He might question his handler but figures out what the ask is pretty quickly and works through it. I can’t wait to see how he does with his new owner!
If you have been watching Sarge, know that YOU could be his new owner! He is available at an adoption event during the Teens and Oregon Mustang Challenge September 4 and online bidding is open to BLM approved adopters! Check out the link or message me for more info!

Sometimes you just need a good roll with your bestie 🤣
As part of Sarge’s training, he has been turned out by himself and with another horse. This is an important step to make sure he has manners when turning out and is easy to catch. Plus it allows him social time with another horse!
Another great day of learning and adventure!
Our goal is to expose Sarge to lots of scenarios and situations he may love to prepare him for riding. A horse that is confident with things on his body, moving, making noise and being unpredictable will likely be more confident carrying a rider.
Today we worked on pool noodles and tarps “riding” Sarge while saddled and lunged. At first he was nervous and even gave a buck or two, but quickly settled down.
Tomorrow, we will do it again!
Another day of desensitizing Sarge.
Today’s new object was a white, plastic grocery bag. The white color seems to make it more noticeable to the horses (like a bright light spot on the ground) and the weight of this bag made a lot of noise.
While you can see Sarge was a bit unsure of the bag, he tolerated his new adventure well!
This week Sarge has been working on lunging on a long line in a bigger pen. We work on making our circle bigger and smaller based off on pressure and cues, moving at all gates and transitioning between gates in response to voice commands. He is picking everything up really quickly!
One thing I find very important with lunging is being able to lunge at the walk. This skill transitions to helping your horse be calm in a stressful situation and helps instill confidence in your horse when they are not right next to you.
Even if your horse doesn’t “need” to be lunged, it is an important skill to have. Lunging can be used as a form of exercise and as a way to introduce them to new skills and activities. This week Sarge lunged in an arena full of kids riding and through the sprinkler as it watered the arena. He did great with both scenarios.
Do you have any lunging exercises you like to do with your horses? Anything you would like to see me do while lunging Sarge?
