We find out Sunday how we place. Regardless of placing Sarge did great!
Sargeās showmanship class today! He was less nervous about the audience and did great!
Sarge did a great job in his on hand trail class today.
Sarge is ready to show today! One of the great, new additions to the Teens Challenge this year is the ability for people to show their support with out purchasing a horse! The program created these QR codes for each horse to allow anyone to donate to the horse and training while at the event or even while at home! Isnāt technology cool?!?
This guy always has fun when getting bathed.

Just a little fun with the leaf blower today! Sarge is a bit of a goof ball!
A little fun fact about Sarge the mustang, he was named after Sgt Reckless just a horse bought by a US military unit in Korea during the Korean War from a local farmer. Sgt Reckless went onto doing many great, heroic, and amazing things during the war including but not limited to, doing over 51 solo supply runs to and from the front lines of combat carrying critical supplies to our Marines. While there are some differences (the biggest being Sarge was adopted for the competition by an Army family š) Sarge much like Sgt Reckless was just a horse when we received him, he Hale's from the BLM HMA Palomino Butte who has already done some amazing things and is destined to do great things! If you would like to know more about sarge the mustang come see us at Linn County Fair grounds in Albany September 2,3,and 4th we are doing meet and greets on September 3rd if you would like to schedule a time please reach out to us!
Ground tying is a great skill for horses to have! Knowing you can rely on your horse to stand where he is placed (even with flies bugging him) is wonderful! Knowing your horse trusts enough to stay where you put him is priceless!
Sarge had his first ārideā today š¤£
Tonight was obstacle night and Sarge had a visit with Erin. It was Sargeās first time being worked through obstacles while saddled plus the first time a new handler worked him on obstacles. They both did great!
Thanks so much Erin!
Today was another field trip for Sarge and the other horses. We are working with Sarge on trailering in different spots in the trailer and working in new areas. Today he did a lot of ground driving. Walk, trot, lope. He turns, stops, backs and steers well in the driving lines.
One thing I enjoy about this guy is that he works the same away from home as he does at home.
Sometimes you just need a good roll with your bestie š¤£
As part of Sargeās training, he has been turned out by himself and with another horse. This is an important step to make sure he has manners when turning out and is easy to catch. Plus it allows him social time with another horse!
The online auction site is up! You can bid on horses via the website and/or in person at the live auction September 4! Check out the site for how to register to adopt horses through this event!
Did you know that when people bid on Sarge via the website prior to the event, we earn bonus points towards Sargeās final placing in the competition? If Sarge is on your list, give him a bid and help him with bonus points! Remember you can bid online now and live in person at the event!
I canāt wait to see who Sargeās first bid is from! How fun would it be for Sarge to be the first horse on the site with any bids?!?!

Sarge is such a good guy to lead around. He looks to his handler to be his leader. In this video we are in a new arena and when I asked him to come with me, no lead rope was needed. Just the cue to join up and he stayed right with me. A great sign of trust and partnership. I have no doubt Sarge will build the same type of trust and partnership with his new owner!
If you have been considering adding Sarge to your herd, message us about meeting him!
For those of you wanting to come see Sarge at the competition, here is the schedule!
He will do all of his competing Friday, have Saturday available for meet & greets with potential adopters and then spend Sunday with awards and the exciting auction!
He will be in the Adult/Teens In Hand
Who is going to come watch Sarge?
Today Sarge made new friends š® š“
Thanks Ralph and Connie for the salt! This will be a great asset with all this heat!

Today Sarge took a field trip to a new arena. Not only did we practice saddling while tied to the trailer, trailering in a new position in the trailer and working in a new environment, we also worked on ground tying while on a bridge.
He was doing such a good job, I had to walk all the way down the arena to grab my phone. While he shifted a bit on the bridge, he didnāt take a single foot off of it.
Thank you to who ever sent Sarge some cookies! It will be fun to see how he likes them!
We greatly appreciate everyone who has sent Sarge gifts from his Amazon wishlist!

We did some serious work with Sarge this weekend in preparation of a busy week coming up.
Today was his first time in driving lines. He quickly picked up on how to respond to pressure on the snaffle to turn, guide, control speed, stop and back up.
Sarge is coming along very nicely and is going to make a fabulous horse for someone! He will be available to a new home as part of the adoption auction at the Teens & Oregon Mustang Challenge September 4. If you are watching him, come meet him before the event! He love visitors š
Another great day of learning and adventure!
Our goal is to expose Sarge to lots of scenarios and situations he may love to prepare him for riding. A horse that is confident with things on his body, moving, making noise and being unpredictable will likely be more confident carrying a rider.
Today we worked on pool noodles and tarps āridingā Sarge while saddled and lunged. At first he was nervous and even gave a buck or two, but quickly settled down.
Tomorrow, we will do it again!
Sarge wants to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who has sent him gifts from his Amazon wishlist and/or sent financial support!
Thank you Brandon, Kathy, Marcia, Cindy and many others!

At times it can seem like we spend so much time teaching hirses little things with out remembering the practical application of that skill. For example: moving ahead off your lead hand. Not only does this transition to a fabulous showmanship performance, it plays a part in most everything you do with your horse - including trailer loading.
We took this skill of sending forward with the lead hand and used it to teach Sarge to load all the way into the front corner of the trailer when we lead him in. Once comfortable with that, we advanced all the way to sending him into the front corner of a 3 horse trailer while his handler stayed outside the trailer. With a cue from the lead rope, voice command of āload upā and some encouragement with the flag in he went!
Trailer loading skills are so important especially if there is ever an emergency. Having a horse that loads easily and calmly is a safety issue. Happy to say Sarge is loading very well!
Now the question is, do I teach him to unload on voice command? What do you think? š¤
Last night we had an obstacle night for all the Teens & Oregon Mustang competitors in our barn. We set up a bunch of fun obstacles to work our horses through. Not only did we have a blast, Sarge worked through the obstacles very well!
I did not get pictures of everything, but he did complete each obstacle presented to him.
Do you know of any obstacles we should add next time?
Today Sarge experienced his first parade. He did great being tied to the trailer and hanging out while we waited for the parade to start. During the actual parade he was calm and quiet even when confronted with kids running around and people wearing inflatable Minion costumes. He was so well behaved I had my 14 year old son lead him through half the parade while I took his horse.
This week Sarge has been exploring more of the outdoors. We have spent time on ātrail walksā and utilizing obstacles found out and about. He also got introduced to road traffic in preparation for a parade this weekend.
Sarge sure is turning out to be a good boy! Today he spent some time being saddled and lunged. We saddled and unsaddled from both sides and lunged at a walk, trot and canter. No buck, no funny business plus he is getting pretty good at lunging on voice command and being soft on the line.
To finish out the day, Sarge got handled by a new person and did great!
Tonight Sarge got to learn about goat tying and lots of kids!
While they got set up for goat tying lessons, I lunged Sarge. He lunged very well with all the noise and distractions. Sarge is really getting his voice commands down while lunging. Then he spent time tied to the wall while the kids had their lessons and practiced goat tying. He took it all in stride!
We came home today to presents for Sarge! Thank you Marcia Wenbert for shopping Sargeās Amazon Wishlist!

Another day of desensitizing Sarge.
Todayās new object was a white, plastic grocery bag. The white color seems to make it more noticeable to the horses (like a bright light spot on the ground) and the weight of this bag made a lot of noise.
While you can see Sarge was a bit unsure of the bag, he tolerated his new adventure well!
I have had a few people message asking how they can help support Sarge and what supplies we could use. Good news! We have set up an Amazon wishlist just for Sarge! It has items in it to help desensitize him, nutritional items, treats and grooming supplies.
If you feel it in your heart ā¤ļø to send Sarge a present š , check out his Amazon list!

This week Sarge has been working on lunging on a long line in a bigger pen. We work on making our circle bigger and smaller based off on pressure and cues, moving at all gates and transitioning between gates in response to voice commands. He is picking everything up really quickly! One thing I find very important with lunging is being able to lunge at the walk. This skill transitions to helping your horse be calm in a stressful situation and helps instill confidence in your horse when they are not right next to you. Even if your horse doesnāt āneedā to be lunged, it is an important skill to have. Lunging can be used as a form of exercise and as a way to introduce them to new skills and activities. This week Sarge lunged in an arena full of kids riding and through the sprinkler as it watered the arena. He did great with both scenarios. Do you have any lunging exercises you like to do with your horses? Anything you would like to see me do while lunging Sarge?
