Start Where You Are

For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality and accepts no bribes (Deuteronomy 10:17, NIV).
On one particular trip home to Sydney, I spent the afternoon visiting my mum (and eating lots of Greek food!).
I walked into the bedroom I had occupied in my mum’s house for almost 30 years and was amazed at how small it was. In that bedroom, I not only slept but somehow managed to fit a study desk that, when combined with my bed, took up every available square inch of space.
I smiled as I reflected on the fact that it was in that room I’d studied for my high school exams, my university exams, and my Bible college exams. It was there I’d written the first six years of sermons I ever preached.
I marveled at how a global ministry started in a room where I could almost touch opposing walls if I stretched out my arms. At that moment, I realized that it’s not the size of the room but the size of our God that determines our destiny.
Sometimes we want to wait until everything is perfect before we start to do anything, but I have found that if we simply start where we are, with what we have, when we can, then God in His bigness is well able to compensate for any of our smallness. And that is good news!

Splendid Church

David said, “My son Solomon is young and inexperienced, and the house to be built for the LORD should be of great magnificence and fame and splendor in the sight of all the nations. Therefore I will make preparations for it.” So David made extensive preparations before his death (1 Chronicles 22:5, NIV).
This verse has to be one of my favorites in the entire Bible. I love the fact that David makes no apologies about the kind of house that must be built for the Lord. It was to “be of great magnificence and fame and splendor,” one that exceeded every expectation.
I believe that is exactly how we should see the church of Jesus Christ today. Our lives should make people stop and wonder, How is this possible? If the same Spirit that raised Jesus Christ from the dead lives on the inside of you and me, how could we live lives that are any less? Our God lives in us!
We are the temple of the Holy Spirit, and we should not shrink back from all God has called us to do. We all carry the Spirit of God Himself within us, and there is nothing ordinary about that. It is magnificent.
The world would love to keep the church small, but God has called His bride to be great. So let’s not be afraid of loving God’s house, serving there, and building exceedingly magnificent lives that bring glory to the One who lives within us. The more we allow the fruit of the Spirit to be developed in our lives, the more like Him we become and the more splendid our lives become.
Believe for big things, dream extravagantly, expect God to do great things, and let’s make His name famous across the earth.

Growing and Changing
Church and our lives, for that matter, were never meant to be built on the pillars of convenience or comfort.

One of my favorite Scriptures is Acts 2:1–4, where it says, When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance (ESV).

I love that. Right there is the birth of the church. Through that historic moment, God set a precedent and pattern that our lives will always be about change. The Scripture shows us that when the Holy Spirit came, the people gathered heard a new sound, saw something they’d never seen, and spoke in tongues they’d never heard.

The same can and should be true in our lives with Jesus. Because, and I’m sure you would agree with me, I don’t want a boring life. I want to go from glory to glory and from increase to increase. I want God to mold me and transform me so I become more like Him. Let’s walk out that transformation together today!

Release the New
“Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert” (Isaiah 43:19, ESV).

You cannot keep doing the same thing and expect a different result. For anything new to happen, old things have to end. And I feel in my spirit today there may be something that needs to be brought to a close in your life so God can release something new.

The key for us is to push past any fear that may arise in our minds. When my husband Nick and I started A21, I often felt like the least experienced person in the room to be doing what we were doing. Then, when I started Propel, I had to come to grips with staff transitions, personality clashes, and even competing agendas.The reality is, there are seasons and stages in life. Each one has a purpose. And if we will remain open to the Holy Spirit — going where He leads us to go, staying where He calls us to stay, and starting something new at the appointed time — we can trust He will always help us along the way.
