This afternoon after a very hard battle the little black boy bottle baby passed away as I was rushing to the vet. There we discovered that they had panleukopenia, a terrible and fatal virus to kittens this little. The four bottle babies are no longer suffering, and I gave them all lots of kisses and cuddles before they went. This is a heartbreaking reality of fostering. Please please please spay and neuter people. These babies shouldn't have to die like this.

Today's been a rough kitten day. Samba stopped using his front leg last night, and at the vets this morning they found he broke one of the bones in his forearm. The vet was perplexed since most kittens break both the radius and ulna (he just broke one) and there was nothing higher than a foot he could jump from. Thankfully, the second unbroken bone is acting as a makeshift splint and we are hopeful he should only need the cast for a week or two.

While I was at the humane society with Samba, they asked me if I could take a litter of bottle babies since I have today and tomorrow off. They are in rough shape, they smell like cigarette smoke and have gnarly colds and diarrhea. The calico is so congested she is breathing through her mouth (the vets didn't see any signs of fluid in the lungs on her X-ray, which is like the one good thing about this litter). I altered one of those nose suckers for newborns to get some of mucus from her nose (no the mucus can't doesn't get in my mouth, although I will admit that was an odd experience). She is the only one that can't breathe properly and yet the only one with an appetite. Two of her siblings are the skinniest kittens I've ever had. I'm hoping they perk up soon and I don't have to force feed them formula any more. I'm trying not to focus on all the things I can't do for them, and the things I can, like make them as comfortable as possible. I will keep fighting as long as they do.

Please spay and neuter. Please.

All owners should understand that flea prevention is a medical treatment and you must take care when applying it. Always consult a veterinarian if you have any questions about flea prevention. It's my personal belief that you should at least establish a good brand and dosing for your pet with your vet before applying any flea prevention products.

Well, Confetti, my foster guinea pig, is NOT pregnant. She is just obese. We'll work on shedding some weight and socialization until there's a spot for her on the adoption floor. This is a good thing! Less piggies needing a home, and Confetti doesn't have to go through the stress and pain of having babies ever again (she definitely was a mama, she has long used teats). With the all clear on the pregnancy she can leave her old life from a hoarding situation behind her and move on toward better things!

I could use advice from you guinea pig saavy folk, especially those who have dealt with guinea pig pregnancy. For one thing, she's absolutely enormous, she's 4lbs so we aren't sure if she's obese or pregnant but she was housed with intact males in a hoarding situation. Thus, she's also extremely fearful and undersocialized. If/When her babies are born, how and when should I go about socializing them while also respecting her boundaries? Since she is so stressed, what are some things I should keep an eye out for or be careful of in regards to her pregnancy/babies? Please tag your guinea pig saavy friends, thank you!

6 years ago I met my best friend in the form of a eight week old pit/lab/Aussie cattle dog mix. I was a lonely young teenager, and while I had been fostering for almost 2 years and I loved it and the kittens, I *needed* a dog, and the type of love and companionship only a dog can give you. Maggie was my only comfort during some tough times and her love and cheer was my light in the darkness. I'm forever thankful to for bringing this amazing creature and countless others into my life. And I'm super excited to announce that I've gotten a job at as an Adoptions Associate. I'm so thrilled to be taking a more active role in the HSSV community, and to do more to find animals loving homes! I've wanted to work here since I found the foster program at age 11. That might give you some idea of my level of excitement! 😁😁😁
