Our team is currently getting ready to head in rural cities later this week. We have a busy weekend ahead of us, where we will be dedicating our time to helping people and their pets. We are thrilled to be able to provide affordable veterinary care to a rural community that does not usually have access to such care. We will be able to help hundreds of families. This is Stephanie. She’s about 4 weeks old, and she’s our newest officemate for the day. She’s recovering from pneumonia, but she’s eating well and napping as much as she can so she can feel better tomorrow. We’ve been enjoying all of the puppy dream sound effects!

We’ve had an eventful week at our Community Pet Clinic! Our medical team frequently sees animals who have eaten items they shouldn’t have. Sometimes, these items get stuck in their digestive system and must be surgically removed. This is a costly surgery that many families cannot afford for their pets. On Saturday, Smokey’s family came to us after another vet clinic referred them. Our veterinary team was able to work Smokey in for surgery Saturday evening. Smokey’s radiographs were a puzzle to our team. When our veterinarian performed surgery on Smokey, she was shocked at what she found. Smokey is a 10-pound cat who ate 26 nickels, 1 penny, and a dime. We are happy to report that sweet Smokey is doing so much better, and we are so thankful we could help him and his family get the care they needed. ❤️

Earlier today, a dog named Ivy was brought to us. She had been living in an outdoor pen with two male dogs who had not been neutered. We were shocked when we laid eyes on this precious girl. Ivy’s neck was covered in abscesses, likely due to bite wounds from the other dogs, and she had a chain around her neck coated with debris from the wounds. We can see the hurt in her eyes and can’t imagine what she has experienced. We know this girl is painful, but our team is working hard to get her comfortable. Our veterinary team will clip and clean Ivy’s wounds, run lab work, and get her started on antibiotics and pain management. We are so grateful that Ivy is now safe and will keep you updated on her progress as our team continues with diagnostics. We hope her recovery process is speedy. These sweet puppies were brought to us yesterday afternoon by our friends at the Regional Center for Animal Care & Protection. They were found by a good Samaritan in a Walmart parking lot, where they were abandoned. They are very weak, and their health is touch and go. The puppies were incredibly malnourished and were very dehydrated upon arrival. Their gums were nearly white instead of the pink they used should have been. Our wonderful Licensed Veterinary Technician took them home last night to provide around-the-clock care. They have been receiving subcutaneous fluids and B vitamins and are being syringe fed. Please send positive, healing thoughts for these sweet puppies, and we will keep you updated on their progress. Happy Easter to our wonderful family and Team❤️

Rescue update: Sweet Ava is one of the 29 pets who arrived today. She has terrible wounds on her neck, and it's heartbreaking to see. These pets were abandoned and locked in the home for days without food or water. We are listening to them crunch on their food now, and we hope they finally know they are safe. We are working on medical exams currently and will continue to post updates. ❤️

Rescue update: Flyn is one of the 29 pets who arrived yesterday. Like the rest of his housemates, Flyn is very malnourished and extremely dehydrated. He also has a rodent ulcer on his lip. Flyn has received a steroid treatment to help with the ulcer and lots of TLC. In addition, Flyn has an upper respiratory infection that we have started him on antibiotics for and several lesions on his skin. He is a total cuddle bug; all he wants is love and attention. These sweet pets have a long way to go with their recovery process, but they are getting lots of TLC in the meantime. Tiny Tot came in a few days ago. Her condition was critical as she was barely moving and cold to the touch. Her body temperature and blood glucose were too low to read. Our medical team rushed to provide her with emergency medical care. Tiny Tot received subcutaneous fluids, dextrose, and antibiotics for an upper respiratory infection. We were able to raise her body temperature slowly, and she went home as a foster with a staff member so she could continue to receive around-the-clock care.

RESCUE IN PROGRESS: We have 29 cats and Dogs on the way to our Philippines facility. These pets have been living in rough conditions and are in very poor shape. Our hearts break for these sweet animals but we are so thankful they are now in safe hands. Our medical and rescue team is preparing for their arrival. These petsare covered in wounds and abscesses, have severe upper respiratory infections, are covered in fleas, and are extremely malnourished. Please consider contributing to their care and stay tuned for more updates as they arrive. ❤️

Figgy might not be a puppy anymore but he's pretty great. Are you looking for a sport dog? Are you active? This guy is a border collie mix and absolutely perfect! Figgy was found as a stray, and we don’t understand why he was never reclaimed. He has an excellent recall and knows all his basic commands. Best of all, he is a total cuddle bug. Meet Winter Snow! This boy is around 17 years old and so full of love. He has some health concerns, but he doesn’t let that get his spirit down. He’s looking for a patient, loving home where he can spend the rest of his days. Winter Snow recently had some of his teeth pulled that were infected, a mass removed, and he was neutered. He also has a significant heart murmur and is on some heart medications to help. This sweet boy has been through so much and shouldn’t have to spend the rest of his possibly limited days in the shelter. Are you interested in adopting or hospice fostering this sweet boy? Where are our Great Pyrenees people at? Meet Liam! Liam is 3 year old and timid in the shelter environment. He is looking for a home that will be patient with him as he settles in and decompresses. He is very treat motivated and warms up quickly to new people. Because he is a bit timid at first, he would likely do best in a home without kids, so the environment is a bit quieter. We are COMPLETELY full of wonderful dogs waiting for loving homes! When we are at capacity, we cannot pull dogs from local shelters where they are at risk. If you are considering adopting, now is the time. Our Adoption Center will be open at 10am tomorrow for walk-in dog adoption appointments.

UPDATE! Miko found his loving family but we have many other awesome dogs looking for loving homes. Our adoption center is open until 6pm.
Meet Miko! Miko is pretty much perfect. He was found in rural Virginia last month with a note tied to his neck that said, “free to a good home.” Our heart breaks for this sweet boy because he is just so perfect. He seems to do well with other dogs and loves everyone he meets. He is pretty laid back; he only wants a loving family to call his own. Could that be you? Our adoption center is open until 6 pm today so feel free to stop by and meet this sweet boy or our other available dogs! ❤️

The number of dogs currently sick with parvovirus throughout the Roanoke Valley is insanely high. These dogs are suffering from a dangerous, yet preventable illness. The Parvo Vaccine is effective and inexpensive compared to the cost of treatment, not to mention that treatment, unfortunately, does not guarantee survival. To take action against this virus and ensure the health and safety of pets throughout the valley, we are offering a low-cost, drive-thru parvo vaccination clinic this October 8th from 2-7 pm at the Park Upper Level. For just $5, you will be protecting your pup from parvovirus, distemper, parainfluenza, and infectious hepatitis. The clinic is drive-thru and we ask that owners and their pets remain in their vehicles. All are welcome and vaccines will be given out on a first come, first served basis. The Regional Center for Animal Care & Protection will also be at the event with free pet food to hand out to those who need it.

Did you know that parvovirus can live up to a year in the ground soil? Moreover, the virus can live in puddles, mud, snow, leaves, sidewalks, beaches, hiking trails, rest areas, kennels, parks, and can even be brought home by humans through their clothes and shoes. Parvo is highly contagious, which makes this virus a deadly combination. However, parvo in puppies and adult dogs can be easily prevented by the parvo vaccine. With the increase in cases of parvo throughout the we will be offering the parvo vaccine this Friday, October 8th at our drive-thru parvo vaccination clinic. From 2-7 pm at the Washington Park Upper Lot, we will vaccinate your pup for $5. This vaccine will help protect your pup from parvovirus, distemper, parainfluenza, and infectious hepatitis. All are welcome and vaccines will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis. date for other cities will be announced soon

Lilah Update: We often experience a lot of heartaches, but it is undoubtedly outweighed by the good. One thing we are always so incredibly grateful for is our amazing community, who constantly supports us so we can continue helping animals in need. Remember Lilah, who came to us a few weeks back? Look at her now! She has gotten a dental procedure to have her teeth extracted that were causing excruciating pain. She was started on heart medication and was able to be fully groomed. We want to express our gratitude as helping dogs like Lilah would truly not be possible without your continued support. Thank you!
