“Morty now prefers to stay outside on his bed and people/dog watch than to come back inside with me when I’m done gardening. I’m right inside the window so I can see him, so I know he’s safe, and he can come to the door at any time... but it’s a big step after 7 years and a new level of confidence for him. He has 4 other beds and 2 other outdoor beds and a house, but I have to bring this one outside for him and then back inside.”

Today, our dog bed, RuffRest, has become the first on the market to receive an R-value via rigorous testing. What's an R-value test, you ask? It's a lab study to determine insulative values. It's what you should be concerned about if you're buying, say, a sleeping bag for a 20-degree campout.

R-values are incredibly important for determining values on everything from the insulation in your house and heat values of highway asphalt, to the performance of outdoor gear. In other words, R-values have been used to measure thermal qualities for human products for a long time, so much so that they have their own global standards.

No pet company thus far has invested in checking the R-value of their products. But I stand behind RuffRest in every way and accepted the risk of having a third party tear my dog bed apart to tell me what I already know.

The story of how it happened will go down in Timberdog history. A couple of weeks ago, I finally got some time to call a string of labs to ask them if they'd conduct an R-value test for free. I've done it in years past and have always gotten a flat no, but figured I'd try one last time. In return, I offered the engineers a RuffRest.

These labs are billion-dollar corporations that have contracts with major construction companies, airlines, and the US government. They have no use for a dog bed and cannot accept gifts. But their test costs $3,000, and there was no way I could afford that.

I was down to my last call when I put my phone down and decided I had had enough rejections for one day. I got up to do the dishes and a minute in, turned on my heel and walked right back to my phone. With sudsy hands, I made that last call on my list.

I spoke to the engineer - Steve - at length. He sympathized with me and then apologized for telling me no. Unsurprised, I hung up, and went back to my sinkful of dishes.

Afterwards, feeling down, I decided to watch some TV and thought about how I could solve this problem. For years, I have wanted an R-value rating for my product. And then I heard my phone ding.

It was an email from Steve. In the usual terseness of engineers, he simply wrote, "call me" - no punctuation, no signature. I called him immediately, thinking he had some suggestions on where I could go to get a free or more affordable test.

"I'll do it," he said.

What? Had I heard him correctly? After years of trying to bribe scrupulous engineers with my humble dog bed, was he going to take the bait?

"I have a new engineer I'm onboarding next week and want to throw him a challenge with your little pet bed." Patronizing "li'l lady" tone aside, it was one of the most beautiful sentences I've ever heard.

"Done," I replied, employing his monosyllabic style.

Two weeks later, the results are back. The RuffRest Ultimate Dog Bed has received an R-value of 7.5, tested by ASTM-certified engineers in a battery of exams. A 7.5 R-value is exemplary. Champagne-popping exemplary.
