The use of service dogs to perform a blocking task is becoming increasingly popular in the disability community and for good reason it’s a testament to their capabilities and the immense benefits they can bring to those living with a wide range of physical and psychological disabilities.
A service dog performing a blocking task provides a literal barrier between their handler and other people, often in crowded situations. This can be incredibly beneficial to those living with PTSD, autism, sensory processing disorders and other disabilities. Furthermore, the brains response to having a dog literally blocking the path of another can be extremely calming—providing both a sense of safety and security while reducing the potential for triggers to be activated.
For those living with autism, a service dog trained in blocking tasks can provide an invaluable sense of structure and understanding to unfamiliar environments—helping to reduce anxiety in situations that would otherwise prove overwhelming. In addition, the physical barrier provided by the dog can help alleviate intense feelings of sensory overload.
Finally, it is worth noting that a blocking task can also act as an alerting system. In the case of PTSD, for example, if the handler begins to experience an elevated heart-rate or breathing pattern, the service dog can interpret this and immediately move into position to create the physical buffer.
When considering the various advantages of having a service dog trained in performing a blocking task, it is clear that they offer far-reaching physical and psychological benefits for those living with disabilities. Whether it be acting as a physical barrier or an alerting system, service dogs provide their handlers with an incredible sense of safety and security regardless of their environment.
