This is the Director doing this post. Many of you have reached out to get an update on the found dog from New Haven that was brought to our shelter. I apologize in advance for the length of this post; however I feel that it is important that we provide some information to those reading it , in case someone who needs to see this information , sees it. And before you read any further, please understand this information contains very sensitive and graphic information that some may not want to see or hear.
Many times we post the wonderful stories with the happy endings. There’s so much going on in the world that we feel like sending positivity out there is so important. But we have the stories that keep us up at night. We have stories that make us wonder what happened to these precious animals before we took them in and how it happened…. unfortunately this is one of those situations.
I want to say if someone is in a situation where they are fearful for their animal’s safety or they are having concerns for themselves or others in a home, feel free to email me at [email protected]. I am not saying that this dog has come from a situation like this, but I am concerned that we have had quite a few interactions with people this year from this scenario. And while we cannot take in every animal, we certainly will do our best to help direct you and try to help get your animal to safety and to get you to the appropriate resources as well.
Many of you may have noticed the wrapped bandage that the dog had on his paw when we posted him the other day. That same day, we brought the dog to the vets where x rays were performed. They stated immediately that this little guy needed to be rushed to the emergency vet hospital. While the local vet could not tell exactly what was happening, they knew the dog’s front leg was decaying and he was missing toes.
After rushing him to the emergency vet hospital we waited for the phone call to understand what was happening. We will spare you from the photos, but all we can say is they are horrific. Here are the notes from the Doctor: Removed chewed foul smelling bandage. Under green vet wrap, bandage was made from white tape and a cut apart plastic water bottle. The inside of the bandage was black, foul smelling, and contained some pieces of flesh in the bottom. The limb was unshaved. The skin at the ends of the foot, palmar aspect of the foot, and lateral aspects of the metacarpus were necrotic with exposed bone. The most distal aspects of the digits were absent. The limb was shaved and debrided of as much necrotic tissue as possible including removal of paw pads which were hanging and necrotic. The distal aspect of the foot was cold to the touch. The limb was scrubbed and flushed. A wet to dry bandage was placed..
When the vet described what she thought could have caused the wounds, she stated a guillotine. We imagined maybe a hatchet. We don’t know that as a fact…. But she was trying to describe the force and object type it would have taken to sever the toes. The dog had a complete loss of toes which was caused with a straight fine edge object. The manner in which the bones were cut off were not done in the typical manner that a veterinary doctor would do it. The vet described the immense amount of pain this dog has suffered with FOR WEEKS as his paw deteriorated. Obviously someone tried to stop the bleeding and create a splint with the water bottle pieces, however because they were not vets and did not provide this dog with pain meds, medical care and antibiotics, the dogs paw decayed and rotted. This little dog was left without proper care and in this condition for WEEKS.
At this point, the dog will need a complete amputation of his leg. He will require nearly $7,000 in care.
We are collecting donations for his care, his after care and the rehabilitation that will be necessary for him moving forward. You can donate here https://www.branford-ct.gov/departments/animal-shelter/donation and put that it is for Evander’s care You can also send a check in his name to DCAS 11 Cherry Hill Rd Branford CT 06405. As you can imagine, he has lost trust in people right now and will need time to come around.
We are conducting a joint investigation with the New Haven Animal Shelter to find the owners of this little guy and/or to receive any information on who he was with when this injury happened. If you have any information about this dog please email me at [email protected] or call us at 203-315-4125.
We will update everyone on Evander’s progress. They estimate he is about 9-12 months old. He is possibly a silky-wire haired terrier mix.
