Masked farriers, spotted around the county. A century ago would they have thought I was a horse rustler?

I was recently asked to work on a lovely old mare that had gone far too long since her last trim. She was in quite a state when I met her. Despite being very sore she stood square for me while I got her feet back in shape. She walked off sound.

A bit off topic but I manage a small historical(ish) blacksmith shop for a local foundation, and this year during their annual viking festival we did something i'm both rather proud of and think might be some inspiration. A young man and his family were put in contact with us via the Make A Wish foundation as he was really interested in blacksmithing. The pictures below are of my colleague Sam Rutherford leading the young man and his father in making their first railroad spike knife. The family was talking about the session all weekend, and I think we really made some memories to treasure. It reminded me of just how much the blacksmith shop remains a place of excitement and wonder to the outsider and how it can mean the world to those who are allowed to step with in it.
