Chocolate is toxic to dogs because it contains a chemical called thebromine, which dogs cannot easily metabolize. It also contains caffeine, which dogs also do not tolerate well. Chocolate toxicities can differ depening on the age, size, and baseline health status of the pet as well as the type and quantity of chocolate consumed (as well as the other ingredients if it was a chocolate-containing dessert).
So, on this national chocolate day, please keep all chocolate out of reach of your pets! And contact a veterinarian or animal poison control immediately if your pet has ingested chocolate or chocolate-containing products!
Pet ownership in America is changing. According to the American Pet Products Association’s (APPA) 2023-2024 National Pet Owners Survey, younger generations now make up half of all pet-owning households.
Wishing you all a safe and Happy Halloween!
