Our obsession with our two resident cardinals is growing. We've named them Dezi and Lucy!
After 14 1/2 years of being my constant shadow, overseeing every UPS/FedX/Prime Delivery and being heavily woven into the fabric of all our memories- we said goodbye to Lily. We are choosing to remember her highlights - but as we do, the sadness comes. We are so grateful she was ours!
Wishing you all a safe and Happy Halloween! 👻🎃🍬🍫
Halloween, like many holidays, can be dangerous for our pets!
Follow these safety tips to keep pets safe!
🎃Candy and treats can be toxic to pets! Even small amounts can cause big issues!
👻Pets generally don't like to wear costumes. Work with training your pet to wear a costume ahead of the holiday, and make sure your pet is only wearing a costume when supervised. (Also, humans in costumes can be quite frightening to pets!)
🎃Accidents can happen, such as pets slipping out a door during trick-or-treating. Please make sure your pet is wearing a collar with up to date identification. And make sure your pet's microchip information is up to date.
👻Watch pets closely around holiday decor! A jack-o-lantern can easily be knocked over or chewed on, and cats are notorious for getting into lights! Make sure your pets are always supervised around decorations.
Did you know that National Cat Day began in 2005? It was founded by author and animal welfare advocate Colleen Paige, and was later adopted by the ASPCA, to bring awareness to the extreme numbers of cats in shelters and rescue groups needing homes. It also serves as a day for cat owners to celebrate their feline companions.
Who are you celebrating today? 🐈🐈⬛
Did you know: "Pit Bull" is not actually a breed?
It is a blanket term used to describe several 'bully breeds' with similar physical features, such as: The American Pit Bull Terrier, The American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, and many others.
These breeds have been misjudged and mislabeled as dangerous dogs, and there are many popular myths surrounding them.
The goal of Pit Bull Awareness Month (and today, Pitbull Awareness Day!) is to stop the spread of misinformation, change the public's perception....and to promote the adoption of these lovable dogs.
It's National black cat day! We all know (for some strange reason) that black pets aren't adopted at the same rates as pets of other colors. We obviously don't agree with any of those crazy superstitions, and think black cats are purrrfect! 🖤🖤

Did you know that there are some sounds, such as a meow, that cats only make for humans? 🤯
Today marks the beginning of National Veterinary Technician week.
Veterinary Technicians are highly skilled, educated veterinary professionals.
We often hear credentialed veterinary technicians compared to human nurses, but this is an inaccurate description of all the skills, knowledge, and job duties of a veterinary technician. A Technician's job and education includes aspects of: anesthesia, pharmacology, anatomy and physiology, dentistry, radiology, nursing care, surgical assistance and OR attendant, ER triage and care, ......and the list goes on (and on, and on!) ALL FOR MULTIPLE species!
Having a qualified, credentialed veterinary technician caring for your pet makes a world of difference. Please make sure to thank all of the wonderful technicians caring for your pets this week!
It's Friday the 13th!! Are you superstitious? 🐈⬛🔮✨
Looking to include your pet in the tastes of fall? Here are some pet-safe options!
Remember to use whole foods: such as apple slices (not apple pie filling!), and not recipes prepared with these items, as additives such as sugar and other sweeteners, milk, cream, spices, and other ingredients aren't safe for your pets!
For fun alternatives, try these foods frozen, or change the texture by mashing or making them into a puree.
In the US, pet obesity is more common than you think! In 2022, 59% of dogs and 61% of cats were classified as overweight or obese. Those extra pounds can really impact your pet's health and quality of life.
Make sure to have a discussion with your veterinary care team about your pets' weight.

Along with fall comes some of our favorite treats -- caramel apples! Are apple seeds poisonous to pets? Here's a question we are frequently asked about apples at the APCC, along with toxicologist Dr. Tina Wismer's response:
Q: My dog ate part of an apple core including the seeds. I have read that the seeds contain cyanide so I called my vet. He told me not to worry. I'm glad my dog is fine, but why wasn't my vet worried?
A: This is a situation of 'the dose determines the poison.' Apple seeds do contain very small amounts of cyanide, but it would take about 3 oz of just seeds to cause a problem in a medium sized dog. Also, the dog would have to chew into all of those seeds, because the cyanide is not released if the seed is swallowed whole.
Apple seeds are a much bigger problem for grazing animals because they do ingest large amounts and they grind the seeds when they chew them.

According the the WWF, the populations of of elephants continue to decline. In the past century, more than 90% of African elephants and at least 50% of Asian elephants have been lost due to the illegal ivory trade, and loss of habitat due to climate change and human settlements and agriculture.
Elephants are magnificent creatures. They are the world's largest land animals, and their lives can span 60-70 years. There are only three species of elephants: African Savannah, African Forest, and Asian elephants. They can be differentiated by their ears and trunks. 🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘

Chocolate is toxic to dogs because it contains a chemical called thebromine, which dogs cannot easily metabolize. It also contains caffeine, which dogs also do not tolerate well. Chocolate toxicities can differ depening on the age, size, and baseline health status of the pet as well as the type and quantity of chocolate consumed (as well as the other ingredients if it was a chocolate-containing dessert). So, on this national chocolate day, please keep all chocolate out of reach of your pets! And contact a veterinarian or animal poison control immediately if your pet has ingested chocolate or chocolate-containing products!
